But about the baby and the stairs, that could mean a zillion symbolic or even mentally confused things other than a link to the skyjacking. What does it mean to you? I have a big stake in keeping them rare. Did you know that spellcheck substitutes hangover for hangdiver? I almost goofed up big time but caught it. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 8. Farflung wrote: I cannot find evidence that the 727 was used for dropping people in Viet Nam, just rumors, but it sure was used for that in Thailand, we've seen the videos. Those were test jumps, not operational jumps. I welcome Dan to the forum. He is an old school jumper and an airline pilot, really good credentials for this quest. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  9. We should have invited Quade to come and to present on the Cooper Vortex and Cooper Curse afflictions. Who better? I wonder if Marla could have brokered a deal with Q to relent on Snowmman's permaban? Think so? Hell, I bet Marla could have got Bob Knoss and Jamie Cooper reinstated with high honors. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  10. Not being a pilot, it is eluding me. Did the altitude cap (no higher than 10,000 ft) and the destination dictate a particular route? NICE DC 3! I've seen a few photos of your plane in magzines, Air Classics and Propliner I think. If you have time PM me with some details about Annie's ailments. The Carvair fanatics are really hoping that she can find a new life in AK as a freight dog, maybe with Brooks. There are only two Carvairs left in the world, Annie and one in South Africa. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  11. Oh yeah, been there on a DC 3 jump with SkyGod spotting. Landed in a frigging K Mart parking lot. Yeah, it was cloudy. SkyGod was hunnnert puhcent shua that he recognized a DZ landmark through the murk. Had to hitch hike back to the DZ. So Dan, if you are Cooper and have only given a destination to the crew not a flight path, how do you spot? Not a sarcastic question. I am not a pilot, just a jumper. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  12. in the midst of Marla Mania Sheridan has slipped back into the shadows. I really hope that Geoff or Bruce or someone can get an interview with him while he is still alive. He avoids me and I wont just show up at someone's house, it's not my style. Sailshaw has read Sheridan's novel and I'd be interested in seeing what he says about it. I saw all sorts of parallels to Norjack, but I see clouds in coffee too. Sheridan is a nearly perfect DBC as far as qualifications go. Marine Smoke Jumper Boeing employee in tech documents Expert skydiver Night jumps Jumped in Viet Nam, (as a civilian) Grudge (against the govt over Viet Nam atrocities) He lived with Sailshaw for a brief period. Sailshaw was a Boeing engineeer working on the 737 stairs (Alaska Airlines ordered some, side not ventral). According to Sailshaw Sheridan pumped him for info on the 727 stairs, but Sailshaw didnt have any 727 info. After that, Peterson got a job at Boeing in technical documents. The FBI was quite interested in Peterson, meeting with him twice, but ruled him out after a DNA sample was taken. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 15. BTW, the quiet and lovely raspberymoon has jumped from a 727 and is also a former flight attendant. How's THAT for a Cooper combo? But like Musika, raz preferred to dwell in the shadows at the symposium while we loudmouths pontificated with self annointed expertise and authority. It sure was fun, thanks again Geoff, well done. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  17. Dan, You and I have come to the EXACT same conclusion on whether steering was a plus or minus for the Cooper jump. I presented it as a big liability in my symposium talk last weekend. Cooper chose the right rig for sure. Hard to think of a better rig for the jump he made actually. An Army T10 round canopy would let you down softer but I wouldnt trust deploying one at 190 mph. A C9 or Navy Coni can handle that no problem. Very cool about flying a Carvair, such a unique acft. If you have any pix let me know. There are some Euro guys who are FANATICS about Carvairs and run a website that is all Carvair all the time. I bought the Carvair book recently published. Pricey but I can understand it. Such a limited market. http://www.amazon.com/ALT-98-Carvair-Comprehensive-Aircraft-Airframes/dp/0786436700 I am a DC 3 nut. Which one do you own? I've jumped many, but the most amazing performance was from Southern Cross which had 1820-86 engines and outclimbed any DC 3 I've been in. Glad your case has evaporated. Will Fat Annie fly again? I hear she has been sitting dormant in TX for years. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  18. Dan, Sincere condolences regarding your wife's death. You obviously have a lot to deal with at the moment so I'll stop my tease jabs. No surprise to me that the cops may have misrepresented the facts in the Gruffin incident. During my years as a criminal defense lawyer I saw a lot of fabrication by police officers. I keep an open mind on such matters having seen cops lie under oath to get a conviction. You might want to read Bruce's articles in Mountain News regarding the chutes. It really doesn't matter what combo of NB6 NB8 C9 or Navy Conical was jumped. Any permutation in the hands of an experienced knowledgeable jumper could put you alive under a good chute. Once on the ground, my expertise ends. Survival and undetected egress present some real challenges. Wonder if we ever jumped together at WFFC in Quincy or Rantoul? Good luck in your case. Hope you have top notch counsel. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  19. Despite Dan Gryders big problems right now (arrested for essentially assaulting officers with a taxying 1940s vintage DC 3, which has to be a first in the annals of crime), he has a lot of expertise as a commercial pilot and veteran skydiver. He also has jumped from a 727. I deplore the teasing but have to admit a lot of curiosity about his alleged solution of the DB Cooper mystery. He, like Jerry, is claiming that the "official" flight path is way off. I don't like violence but the picture of cops being chased by a lumbering DC 3 does have some slapstick comedic elements to it. In these crazy times, when every Podunk town has a federally funded SWAT anti terrorist unit, Dan is lucky he and his DC 3 weren't taken out by RPGs and machine guns. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 20. Thanks for the update Hangdiver and raz. I wonder if the residents heard the F106 interceptors scrambled from McChord AFB rather than the 727? They never found their target, the NWA 727. F 106s were very loud. Hey Hangdiver. I still want that CC DZ t shirt. Maybe we could all chip in and have Bill Dause drop a load there for old times sake. Think it could happen? Best to you and raspberrymoon. Stay warm and dry my friends. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  21. Really interesting posts here: http://www.avweb.com/blogs/insider/AVWebInsider_DBCooper_205780-1.html Jerry and Dan should compare notes on the flight path. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  22. Dan I agree with you about the survivability of the jump. I think Cooper actually jumped a 28 ft C9 round not a Navy 26 Conical. Cosseys latest ID of the harness container was NB8 not NB6. No big deal either way. Both were fine canopies. I've had lots of C9 rides and only one Navy Conical ride (my first cutaway). Dan, don't do teases here. If you've solved the crime tell us now, not in 2012. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  23. 2012??? Damn, the tease virus is spreading. Call the Center for Disease Control. And why are the two women in your video doing nothing? Are they clues? Dan in the video hails from Griffin Georgia. Isn't that where the ATL 98 Carvair N83FA crashed? Poor guys had engine trouble on TO and bought the farm. That left Carvair hangar queen FAT ANNIE N89 FA to be restored to airworthy condition. I jumped FAT ANNIE at the World Free Fall Convention. Gee, that really sounds bad. Hey, she's an airplane. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  24. Why such a complex answer Georger? I guess what you are saying is that you do not believe Tina said anything about Cooper's apparent ease in putting on the parachute rig? Why throw in the negotiable currency stuff? Snowmman chastises me all the time for blurring facts. You can chastise me too if you like doing it, but it's redundant. I posted that Sheridan Peterson was a WW2 combat vet and Snow rapped my knuckles. Pete was a Marine during WW2 but arrived in the Pacific too late to see combat. If Cooper put on an NB8 (or NB6) quicky I guarantee you it wasnt his first time gearing up with a parachute rig. I am just trying to find out if we have any reliable info about how easy or difficult it was for him. Do we? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 25. Farflung wrote Yes, 2 chutes for skydivers and the reserve has to be inspected and repacked every 180 days by a licensed rigger. BASE jumpers almost never wear reserves because they pull the main too low to have a second chance with a reserve. Stock NB8 (and NB6) has no reserve attachment D rings. You'd have to improvise something using carabiners, cords or rope. I wouldnt bother trying to rig a reserve if I were Cooper. Just take a chance on the main. Military bailout rigs are VERY reliable. Military aircrew depend on one chute only, no reserves. Chute failures happen but are very rare. I dont think he was trying to attach a second chute for a back up. My guess is that he wanted to use thr reserve container as a money bag and perhaps discarding the canopy. It wasnt ever a sport skydiving rig, just a pilot emergency bailout rig. Yes, thats what it was. It was later sold to an acro pilot named Norman Hayden as per Bruce. See above. Dunno, probably her first time, but you really need to see a whuffo try to put on an NB8. It is obvious to ANYBODY that they are encountering trouble and cant figure it out. No, same as NB8, no D rings. It isnt settled but I'd put my bets on Norman Hayden owning both main rigs. Bruce did a great job investigating the matter. Cossey packed them and probably did the ripcord handle location mod on the NB8. He may have used the NB8 for a while before selling it to Hayden. I really wish you had been there Farflung, Vicki too.... and Snow, Safe, Orange, Sluggo and Jo too. Not to forget the 99ers and many others whose names I have forgotten to include, like Guru and Jerry Baumchen and on and on. I had a funny feeling that Safe was there but doing a covert op. The Kick Ass Oregon History guys were great. I hope someone got them on video and can post a link. My wife thought your poem rocked and was better than mine.
