  1. bits from one and hexadecs from another. Must be old coders hangin out here. I remember toggling instructions in bit by bit from front panel switches. The skydiving gear back in the day was just as primitive. Jo, you have never trusted anyone here. You've always spoken in riddles and cyphers. As for Carr, I hope things work out well in DC. I was worried Jo hurt his career but obviously she didn't. I got a chuckle out of Georger quoting Carley Simon. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 3. Jo, Well, we've had RFK, JFK and MLK brought into the "Duane was Cooper" deal so I guess sooner or later Howard hughes had to be brought in as well. I used to work for Hughes (the company not the man) and got a really close look at the business history of Mr Mystery himself. There were tons of things archived that gave a pretty good look at what he did and didnt do with respect to the US Govt. and it's various three letter agencies. HH didn't have control of the US Govt or the CIA or NSA etcl... in fact quite the opposite was true. To resolve a huge hassle with the govt., HH ended up donating the entire Hughes Aircraft Company to the non profit Howard Hughes Medical Foundation which even today sponsors a HUGE amount of medical research. He had other companies like Summa, but the big one was given away lock stock and barrel. The Medical Institute evenually sold it to GM and reaped a huge payment which funds it today. The stories about Hughes being behind Watergate are pure fantasy. Towards the end of his life HH was consumed with fear about being poisoned by underground nuke testing in Nevada and really did offer the US Govt HUGE amounts of money if they would cease. They completely ignored his pleas and offers. Hughes Aircraft did build a lot of exotic spook stuff including very advanced surveillance satellites and sensors. One of the very first practical lasers invented in Hughes's labs by Ted Maiman. There are lots of other classified devices made for the spooks that would truly amaze you even today. Some of the things Hughe's companies made were "one off" devices used for just one highly specialized mission. Glomar Explorer is a good example. There were others. The CIA did a lot business with Hughes due to his company's "miles ahead" tech capability, but they didn't do his bidding at all. They viewed him as an eccentric at first and a wacked out nut case near the end. Once he donated the company he was no longer in control and faded into his weird reclusive existence. One of the first things that happened after HH died is that they took the Hercules Flying Boat (he hated the name Spruce Goose) off life support. It had been maintained in near ready to fly condition for decades at a huge cost. While 747s were plying the skies, the company was lavishing care on a laminated veneer wood plane that couldnt even land on a runway and was powered by eight ancient 28 cylinder radial piston engines. Enough about HH. back to DBC. Burnworth must have had an air tight alibi if he was suspected of being Cooper and was released without charges being filed. The fact that he may have been a suspect is interesting, but the chances that he was Cooper are almost zero in my opinion. If he really was arrested as a Cooper suspect he can get his FBI reports through FOIA and prove it. Let Snowman back Quade, life sentences are barbaric. Do I have to get Amnesty International involved? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  5. Bruce, Be careful not to confuse the city of San Mateo with the County of San Mateo. The San Mateo County Jail is in Redwood City not in the city of San Mateo. 6. Bruce, Ralph Hatley would be a good person to talk with. He has been in the Pacific NW skydiving scene since Dinosaurs bathed in the Columbia. [In reply to] Quote | Reply Hi 337, That would have been ran by none other than Ralph Hatley. When you say 'Orchards' that does not define it exactly. Orchards is a large undefined 'area' near Vancouver, WA. Ralph was first ( opened in ~early '64 ) at an airport that was known as Scholls and/or Frinks; we used both names & I never did know the official name. Then in about '68 he moved slightly east to another airport that would be closer to the area known as Orchards. Then in ~'74 ( I could check a logbook ) he moved to the airport that is today the location of Skydive Oregon near Molalla, OR. I'm not sure when he moved to his present location near Eagle Creek/Estacada, Oregon. Does that help? I've jumped at all of them a fair amount, JerryBaumchen PS) If you ask any more questions, can I start charging for my time? PPS) I entered my first competition in the summer of '64 on a Double L at Ralph's dz at Scholls. 8. Why is Burnworth trying to sell Iridium? How does an ex airline pilot end up with A quantity of an exotic metal mined in Africa? This isn't exactly like gold or silver, which are commonly held precious metals. It's pretty exotic and is primarily used for hi tech applications. Just curious. Maybe Bruce can find the answer. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  10. Before the National Park Service sealed up most of the access points, there used to be many open abandoned mines in Death Valley CA. My brothers and I decided to explore several despite warnings from our folks to stay out. Many were caved in near the opening but we found one that looked open. We told our parents we were going on a trail hike but instead we went deep into an abandoned mine. It was weird, a flashlight only lit up what it was aimed at. Without airborne dust to scatter light you get very little illumination of your surroundings. The walls of the shaft were not very reflective and the end result was unless you shined a flashlight directly at a hazard you didnt see it clearly. I almost stepped into a vertical bore that would have been my end. Many support timbers were cracked or broken from stress. We walked for what seemed like half a mile into the mountain and then came back because were worried that our batteries would run down. We piled up rocks at branches we took so we wouldnt get lost coming back out. Scary stuff, but we were kids and didnt fully appreciate the risk. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 11. I have no idea what iridium was trading at then but sure i could find out! But would you want that inflation adjusted as well..? Both straight dollars and inflation adjusted would be nice. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  12. Thanks Georger and Orange. I see no proof that Burnworth was arrested as a Norjack suspect, at least so far. I am curious as to his post about selling Iridium. It's just odd, that's all. Here's one for Orange: If Cooper had invested the remaining loot ($200K-Tena Bar money) in Iridium in 1971, what would it be worth today? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Go ahead and speculate, thats what we do here in the absence of facts. As far as Duane being a white hat Mafia infiltrator, show me some proof. How do you know this Jo? Burnworth could obtain the FBI reports on him thorugh a FOIA request. If he was arrested by the FBI, the reports would detail the basis of the arrest. If the yacht was a US vessel then all I need is the name of the yacht and year you were aboard and I can probably find out who owned it Jo. 14. Bruce, First let me thank you for tracking down Burnworth and interviewing him. Good job. I never shoot the messenger. Second, thank goodness Snow is still on the case. I will sleep better tonight. Can't vouch for those wild bar stories but I do know that Snowmman is no stranger to Dutch, Adak and other godforsaken far north venues. I just want to know if the bouncer used a crab gauge to do her go-no go metrics and if so was it the King or Dungeness size? Come on Quade, let Snow back in so we don't have to sneak him in through the side door. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  15. Why not? Runway is 3900 ft long, 100 ft wide. DC 7C has 127 ft wingspan but I dont think there are obstacles alongside the runway which would preclude a DC 7 from flying in or out. Am I missing something? I am not a licensed pilot. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  16. I'll listen to anything that a guy type rated in DC 7s has to say. Heavy recip time gets extra slack from me. But I do agree Quade that there are holes in the Burnworth story big enough to fly a C 133 through. Check out the C 133. I sure wish Don K had lured this baby to Quincy or Rantoul before she retired in 2007. HUGE... and she only cost $20,000 surplus. 17. You wouldnt believe the propliner ops in AK during salmon runs. Some landed on the beaches at Bristol Bay. One DC 6 taking off in the evening from the beach got disoriented and clipped some dunes with his wingtip during TO run. It swung and crashed without ever getting airborne. A raging fire developed but the crew was saved from incineration by thousand of pounds of Sockeye Salmon that slid forward and formed an insulating barrier behind the cockpit bulkhead. They were all rescued and had only minor injuries. DC 4s, DC 6s, DC 7s, C 119s, C 97s, and many other classic heavy propliners made their last stands flying fish in AK. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 18. Being investigated and cleared shouldnt disqualify anyone from flying for UAL or any other airline. Sometimes the FBI makes quick arrests in high profile cases with ZERO publicity. They dont want to be embarrassed if they nabbed the wrong guy but they want to keep a suspect from fleeing while they do further investigation. Arrest records are not easily accessible. Once charged, matters become public except in rare cases such as certain spy/espionage/state secrets matters. Burnworth could obtain his own FBI reports through FOIA. Ask him to file a request Bruce. X claims that the FBI fingered Burnworth as a Cooper suspect, but all we have is anonymous hearsay, no solid evidence. Burnworth could have been fired for using UAL as part of an illegal transport of children out of the US without the permission of their legal custodian. His firing and arrest may have had nothing to do with Cooper. The quick repatriation of his kids from Germany back to to the US and to their mother's state suggests that some legal maneuvering about child custody was going on around the time of his arrest. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. 19. DAMN! I always thought skydivers had the craziest ex wifes. Pilots have us in the bag. Don has had five wives. That's a lot of malfunctions. No jokes about packing errors will be tolerated. I don't fault Bruce for including all the details of the interview. It wasnt done for lurid purposes, but to give a full picture of who this guy is. The sex abuse stuff sounds suspicious. How could a person witness and photograph such abuse and not intervene to stop it and/or call the police? If you had proof then the perpertators would do a LOT of time in prison. Having proof and ignoring it just doesnt sound likely to me. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  20. Puzzling. We know that's not true and he should too. You might ask him the basis for his conclusion. I would sure like to see the arrest report. It might have had nothing to do with the Cooper case. I searched and it appears that he was never charged with a federal crime. 21. First of all Sluggo found DB the UAL pilot, not me. I just used Sluggo's leads to find more precise info. DB sure as hell knows the 727 inside out. As a 727 check pilot, 727 FE and the inventor of a major improvement to the 727 electrical load management system, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a suspect who knows more about 727s. I think if he were Cooper thge FBI would have figured it out. He must have had an airtight alibi. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.
  22. My manual does not give details on this space, sorry. Occam's razor says the simplest explanation is that Burnworth's wife had nothing to do with Norjack but thought the drawing looked like her husband and decided to drop a dime on a call to the FBI. If Cooper hid in the stairwell behind some removable covers, how would he escape from the plane after landing without being detected by the FBI who was waiting and watched every move? I've always wondered if the Tena Bar money was tossed long before Cooper exited. You could do a pressure bump by jumping up and down on the stairs while holding on. How do we know that Cooper didnt exit hundreds of miles from where the FBI thinks he jumped? I don't think he landed inside the plane, but I am keeping an open mind. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

  24. an excerpt from the Burnworth patent which is OBVIOUSLY directed towards the Boeing 727 if you look at the system diagrams. The inventor sure knew the 727 systems: http://www.google.com/patents?id=3ccuAAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4&source=gbs_overview_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false "A control system prevents electrical overloads in an aircraft of the type in which electrical loads are automatically connected to an electrical supply bus when the wing flaps are extended. The control system determines the maximum capability of the electrical generators for generating electricity and determines the wing flap position. Because electrical load is related to the wing flap position in this type of aircraft, the control system automatically correlates the wing flap position to electrical load. The control system operatively disconnects electrical load from the supply bus, or prevents energization of additional electrical load, when it determines that the maximum power generating capacity of the operative electrical generators will be exceeded by the automatic connection of the electrical load upon extension of the wing flaps. A test circuit apparatus is used for checking proper operation of the control system. The test circuit apparatus selectively supplies test input signals respresentative of different power generating capabilities and of different wing flap positions. Signals are supplied to indicate operation of the control system in response to the test input signals." This is all interesting but I see nothing that ties Burnworth to Norjack. I discount that "gramps" military HALO jump story and even if true there is nothing that identifies "gramps" as Burnworth. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver.
