http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,54280,00.html Sluggo's Moon Pies and pork rinds are old school. We have taken glycemic indexes and trans fats to a new level. If you know the secret password they will dust the items with traces of exotic metals. I like Iridium. The Japanese prefer the tiniest amounts of Beryllium, highly toxic but it gives them a neural tingle just like eating puffer fish sushi. Kudos again to Bruce. Turns out our DC 7 captain was interrogated as a Norjack suspect. I was sure that claim was BS but it was true. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Before we flog VHF propagation physics, lets look at some basics. In 1971 most non pro VHF receivers had very crude analog tuning and most hobbyist scanners were crystal controlled (a switch selected between several fixed frequencies). M claims she made a phone call to get the SEATAC tower freq then "tuned in." Not as simple as it sounds for a 14 yr old with less than state of the art 1971 VHF receiving gear. She couldn't just enter the freq on a keypad like you can these days. Hunting for an intermittent signal using inaccurate analog tuning isn't always productive. Not impossible, but not a cinch. My experience is that roughly 1.2 times the square root of antenna height in feet gives a pretty good prediction of the radio horizon in miles. Sure there are anomalies due to reflection, ducting etc, but they rarely make a huge difference. I liked Farflung's post. There had to be something significant related to that Iridium. I have made contact with a retired NWA pilot who flew their 727s for 20 years, even flew with Rat a couple of times, and seems open to fielding questions. Have any? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

G wrote: I have manuals for the same series of aircraft issued by different airlines. They are nearly identical differing only on company specific items. The airlines and the military don't write the manuals from scratch. The mfr supplies the system diagrams, photos, explanatory text, troubleshooting guides etc. The customer adds and edits as needed to cover their particular configuration. A 727 FE would know all about the door deployment system but without air test data he'd have no idea whether it could be safely opened in flight. There is nothing in manuals that say ANYTHING about flying with the ventral stairs deployed. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

Ive wondered the same thing. Ive also wondered about this 20 minute gap in the transcript immediately after Cooper bailed ... which has been explained away as a comunication problem (perfectly timed). That 20 minute gap is a dead giveaway. Rosemary Woods must have been working at NWA Dispatch that night. I am the one who found the evidence of Air Americas 727 jumps by corresponding with a University of Texas professor who has chronicled the history of covert air ops in SE Asia. I must admit that it was Jo Webers insistance that 727s were used for air drops during the Nam war that spurred my inquiry. The videos are pretty cool. Snowmman posted some stills. The canopies squidded dramatically reducing opening shock. That was unexpected by me. I thought an out the door deployment would produce a horrific opening shock. I was a jumper and airplane nut. I had manuals for most Boeing airliners. I never would have thought you could lower the stairs in flight. I thought the airloads would push it back up with high forces. I think Cooper KNEW that wouldn't happen. 377 L 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

It's likely that he died but nobody can say it is 100% certain, not yet at least. I know we Cooper buffs ignore logic because we want him to have survived the jump. The balance of the evidence suggests that he did not, but we still hope that he did because it makes the story more interesting. A dumb criminal who gets killed trying something stupid isnt very romantic. Do you think he was a trained jumper Jerry? Military? Skydiver? Both? Neither? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Nobody talks about Ted Braden anymore. Was he ruled out? On what basis? Eyes? Height? Does Sheridan Peterson still read this forum? Turns out old Pete was a very early wingsuit flyer. He was certainly up for trying the unconventional/dangerous. Sheridan never did respond to my questions about how widespread the knowledge was regarding those Air America 727 jumps among people working/fighting in SE Asia. I STILL think that Cooper knew for sure that a 727 could be jumped. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

Just read her part 2 yesterday in my newly arrived Parachutist Magazine. Great graphics including the TTY transcripts of the acft's voice comms, but nothing much in new factual content. The author was drawn to the subject after meeting Himmelsbach at her local airport where he kept his plane. She does interview some highly experienced skydivers who jumped from 727 and DC 9 aircraft and all were suprised at the initial violence of the exit. She apparently got a lot of cooperation from Larry Carr. I'll bet you can buy copies of Parachutist magazine issues from the USPA. Parts one and two of the latest DB Cooper story are are in subsequent issues. http://www.uspa.org/Parachutist.aspx 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. I have a friend who served as an Army Ranger. He saw combat in Grenada and Panama but was too young to have been in Viet Nam. According to my friend, woe be unto Ranger or Special Forces posers who make the sad mistake of peddling their heroic lies in hearing range of the real vets, especially in a bar where a substantial amount of alcohol has been consumed by the real guys. I don't condone beating up mentally ill posers, but that's what happens. At least afterwards the poser can truthfully claim that he fought with the Army Rangers or Special Forces. You ever hear about this kind of stuff Jerry? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

I think it is very wrong to impersonate a vet and to claim combat heroics that never occurred, but have you ever met these pretenders? They are mentally ill in most cases. It is insane to prosecute these sick people and imprison them. Bills like this drum up all sorts of patriotic zeal, but look at the hard facts. You will, in most cases, find mental illness. I helped expose a pretend Viet Nam F4 Phantom Navy pilot decorated hero. I am a Phantom nut and have detailed knowledge about the various models. This guy was really good. He told riveting tales of going "up North" on Route Pack Six dodging SAMS etc etc.... but he made a couple of crucial errors based on having read USAF manuals rather than the Navy ones (NATOPS). Turns out he wasn't a pilot and never served in the military. I busted him but just socially. No need to call the FBI even though he violated the Stolen Valor Act. We don't need to spend millions prosecuting and imprisoning these nut cases unless they used the ruse to steal or commit some other tangible crime. My two cents worth. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

from my post about 3 pages back: ************ "What I saw was flames and thought I saw something on the platform which could have been a person," Janet said. I say NO WAY on the accuracy Janet's alleged sighting of a "platform, ladder, person" or any other structural detail on the 727 that night. **************** Jumpers have a lot of experience looking at exits from jumpships. No jumper would give Janet's visual account of aircraft detail any credibility, especially given the altitude and conditions. Her flare trajectory account is a bit more interesting to me because she allegedly described an arcing descent path. That's what you would see and it's not intuitive to most non aviation people. The "flames" part makes no sense. A road flare would be seen as a bright red point source of light. 66.6 % of Janet's story appears to be BS... hmmmm. What are the chances the rest is true? 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Trained by the late Perry Stevens D-51 in 1968.

G wrote: Boy, lots of us (including me) were flare pyros as kids. I lived near a railroad switchyard and there were "fusee" labeled flares laying all over the place. We did all sorts of insane things with them including melting lead fishing weights and casting them into molds we made out of sand. I too never saw a road flare break into two burning pieces. If Janet's account is accurate it may have been the result of simultaneous burning of a couple of attached flares (eg taped together) and then the attachment tape burned and they separated during descent. Think of what a road flare looks like even a few hundred feet way let alone several thousand feet away. It is a bright red POINT SOURCE of light, no flames, not big at all. It wouldnt look much different than an extra bright red navigation light on a plane. It wouldnt look like a flaming comet or anything close. No flames, no glowing trail, just a bright red dot, in my opinion. If a dropped road flare illuminated nearby clouds then perhaps it could give the appearance of a flaming object, but I doubt it. I have seen white search and rescue flares dropped by military HC 130 planes and watched them descend under parachute thorugh broken overcast layers. They are way bigger and brighter than road flares and still all you see is a point source of light, not flames. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. I say NO WAY on the accuracy Janet's alleged sighting of a "platform, ladder, person" or any other structural detail on the 727 that night. The flare sighting however intrigues me and the arcing trajectory is exactly the path you would see. Most non aviation people would not describe such a trajectory unless then had seen it. A couple of other details dont ring true. She MAILED the FBI? How about a phone call on something so urgent? As for the MIB who allegedly visited her and told her to STFU, that sounds like baloney. I just dont see the FBI doing that, makes no sense. I've seen the FBI be really rude to arrestees and suspects, but they are usually very polite to witnesses even wacky ones. If they wanted to neutralize Janet the easier path would be to thank her for the info and say they are investigating the matter... PERIOD. I have a lot of experience with eye witnesses in criminal cases. In my expereience they are notoriously unreliable with a few exceptions, but there is usually no way to spot those exceptions. Sometimes the most convincing witnesses are the ones with the least accurate account of what they saw and timid equivocal ones are sometimes highly accurate, but the convesrse is sometimes true so you can't predict by personality or presentation. University research bears out my observations about the unreliability of eyewitness testimony.. What I noticed is that they fill in their "eyewitness" story with facts learned by the AFTER their initial observation. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. It reminds me of the buzz in west coast jump circles right after Norjack. It was just so damned cool. Lots of jumpers wanted to be a suspect. Lots of jumpers hinted that they KNEW FOR SURE who Cooper was. The Cooper "flame" attracted a certain kind of moth in 1971 and has continued to do so for nearly four decades. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver. Andy is right, a lawyer can guide you best, but most jumpers I know cannot afford or refuse to spend $200-$700 an hour for anything... with the possible exception of bulk tunnel time or certain similarly priced adult activities. Consult with a lawyer if you can afford it, but if you can't then check out Nolo Press. They have some really well written do it yourself legal books including some on forming your own LLC or corporation. In my experieonce as a lawyer, too many people who set up their own LLC or corp casually end up blowing the protective shield by failing to follow business formalities that keep you and the corp separated. Those formalities seem dumb and bureaucratic but they really are critical if you want to protect your personal assets. 377 2018 marks half a century as a skydiver.
