  1. Alvin, There is a community of local jumpers in Singapore, some expatriates and some local.. I've sent you a private message containing my handphone number - please feel free to contact me. I've done much jumping in Australia and can advise on locations as well as help you out with jumping in Southeast Asia after you graduate. (I am not affiliated with the "Extreme Sports Cafe" or "Skydive Adventure" - I recommend that you avoid both of those organizations).
  2. What is even more of a crock is that Olav has decided that he and his school are the only ones allowed to teach Freefly™ Sadly, as you point out, the AD test is an excellent benchmark of advanced skills, one that I hope to reach one of these days. At the moment there is no other recognizable standard of achievement. But $100 just to take the test is wrong.
  3. agreed here, but remember who asked the question! Clay doesn't strike me as the sort who would prefer a docile canopy for anything other than economic reasons. I take this back.. I never should have said "bad habits". There's nothing bad about them. What I meant to say is that ZeroP requires a different flare technique that will harder to pick up the longer you've been flying F111. And the skill of being able to finesse an F111 landing doesn't really transfer to ZeroP. So, the point is, if you see yourself being under ZeroP eventually (and most skydivers do fall into that category), then I say transition as soon as you can afford it. Hey... I resemble that remark! A short list of things I did under my Sabre190: Landed in a tree. Landed in a stream. Landed in a patch of banana trees in Indonesa Landed downwind after heavy rainfall Packed a flip-thru and had to chop it. ...
  4. there's a reason your canopy doesn't have a collapsible slider.. It's not a performance canopy and wont really benefit from it. Consider moving on to a Sabre(2) or Safire in the 190/170 size. These will perform very differently from what you are used to, and will begin to be in the performace range where it actually makes a difference. Now... I'm not usually one to steer people into canopies beyond their experience level, but I think you've mentioned that you just crossed 100 jumps. I may get flamed, and there will surely be other opinions, but I say get off F111 and start flying Zero P.. At the moment, you are only picking up bad habits that you will have to unlearn when you start landing your ZeroP. As long as you keep the wing loading under 1.2 and don't go extreme elliptical, you should be fairly safe.
  5. Best bet is probably to wrap your rig up in some tight packing material with lots of duct tape and maybe some wires hanging out of it. Get to the airport several hours early and see if you can't find someone to carry it for you.
  6. Yes it's a common error, but to see everyone in this thread make it over and over again, post after post is annoying. "bridle" refers to things attached to your horse or pilot chute. "bridal" refers to things attached to your fiancé
  7. 1 Gettin ur Freak on. 2 Sir Lance-a-Lot 3 Saturday Night Beaver 4 Talking to Ralph on the porcelain phone 5 Abnoxicated 6 Blow Ass 7 Polish ones Porpoise 8. Not my favorite, but the best one I've heard.. from a woman of course: "Finishing the Job"
  8. I don't think you can reset the 7 second requirement. It's hard for these things to detect the start of freefall. In fact, several times I've had it record freefall and deployment at 13000 or so, due to the airplane making a sudden dip. It will still give you your warnings and increment your jump number, but you have to approximate and edit accumulated freefall time. Another way to deal with this is by actually taking 7 seconds. The only explanation I can think of for dumping so quickly on exit from 5k is that you are a recent AFF grad and are still scared of getting out that low. So quit it. From 5k, once you are experienced, even a 20 second delay wouldn't be extreme. In your case, just relax into the relative wind, breath and count to 5, slowly, then whip it out. You'll still be subterminal and probably be under canopy by 4 grand.
  9. As a compromise then, can you at least indicate from where they are being reprinted? As it is, there is typically only a credit to the author, but not to the newspaper or wire that originally published it. A few times I've been caught by thinking that the author was just another member of dropzone.com.
  10. first of all keith, if you are going to quote, enclose it in '['quote']' '['/quote']' blocks so that we can distinguish your stuff from what you are responding to. Adding hate crime legislation wont specifically fix the system. Adding proposals for it, may increase awareness and get to a dialogue that helps. The statement attributed to Nuge, perhaps falsely is pretty sound. If you kill anyone, it is ALREADY a hate crime. It is already against the law. A racially motivated attack should merit a very serious punishment, perhaps even more so. But existing laws provide a framework for this. Adding new laws wont necessarily help. And the "hate crime" folks are following very closely with "hate speech" laws and are fully prepared to dismantle the first ammendment. And plenty of crimes do target white males. I'll say it again, if they are already crimes, then you don't need another law to call it a "hate crime" because of why someone was targetted.
  11. I'm not asking for more detailed incident reports. I'm asking for not repeating the sensationalist terminology of the mainstream media.
  12. His point is that that is the same crime no matter who committed it. Murder is illegal. If you are convicted, and you committed murder in a particularly vile and reprehensible way (which the above scenario most certainly is) then the judge will take that into account during sentencing. There's no need to create additional laws, because as Nuge said (and I don't agree with him on all his points) it goes against "equal protection of the law" It means that someone's life is worth more UNDER THE LAW than someone elses. So the problem with the above unfortunate, despicable incidents perpetrated by the lowest of human slime is not that there aren't laws against hate crimes, but that the existing laws against violence and murder are not being enforced equitably.
  13. I know.. women are still getting 50 bucks for a blowjob but a trannie can only get 10.
  14. Javelin, taking this into consideration recommends the OJ size container for PD mains up to 135 and the safire 139. However, when I ordered a Safire 139, they gave me a J1 container presumably because experience showed that the Safire 139 is too tight in a container designed for a sabre 135. Either that or they fucked up.
  15. While I find it great the way Dropzone.com strives to keep us informed, I have to say that I am continually irritated to see what appears to be incident reports repeated directly from mainstream news media. Statements like "plummeted to his/her death from 14000 feet" and "when his/her parachute failed to open" are dead giveaways that these are not being written by the skydiving community. Yet these items are not identified as such. They are always posted by sangiro and attributed directly to the author by name - with no indication what local or national paper has also printed the article. If they are, in fact, dropzone exclusives, then the editorial tone should be shifted to reflect the appropriate audience. This site is obviously by and for skydivers I'd like to see incident reporting be pitched accordingly. If we don't know facts, we can report on the incident without them. If we do know them, let's present them without the sensationalism.

    The Onion

They still play "we are the world" here in Singapore. A LOT! I was having the same thoughts. Then I saw an article that Michael Jackson had announced plans to bring together a group of artists to perform a tribute called "What more can I give?" I would donate money for him NOT to do that.
  17. So you got yourself a rim job and fixed it?
  18. Then why does a safire 139 pack up tightly into a main container that is designed for a 135? I heard that Icarus moved to a measurement system that conforms to industry standards. It would be nice if we could get information that is not continuously in conflict.
  19. John (a world class freeflyer) got busted up pretty seriously under a samurai. Turbulent wind conditions are the culprit. What I've read so far indicates that no other canopy would have fared any better under those conditions.
  20. Sounds like a PR disaster for Icarus. I was all keen to make a crossfire my next canopy.
  21. [asbestos] I have over 700 jumps and nearly 500 freefly. I've experienced two cutaways already. After much consideration of the risks I have made the personal decision to begin flying camera and am proceeding with caution. [/asbestos] I picked up a mindwarp and a dbox (pc9) and am trying to figure out how to get it mounted. Q1: The helmet is curved and the box is flat. It just doesn't look like it will sit there cleanly. Is it worthwhile to try and get some kind of foam in order to shim it or would that just be a waste of time? Q2: Is it necessary to drill a hole in the bottom in order to fasten the camera with a tripod mounting screw? Q3: my wide angle lens is a nice size but the padding doesn't make a "seal" around the lens. Should I try to get some more foam padding in order to hold it in place and keep the wind (and particulate matter) out? Q4: what's the general feeling regarding mounting the camera facing up or down? Is it possible with the PC9 to invert the image during playback? I fly head up and head down, my head down is improving but it's not that great and the people I fly with are usually head up (and I'm usually below them). Thanks. More questions to follow I'm sure.
  22. sorry kids. the game dujour is here: http://www.fieler.com/terror/ (Flash required) And I got 138 on the first try.
  23. para gear's stat is way off. It might harken back to a time when the sport was much more dangerous, or it might just be wong. It does paint an unfairly grim picture. The numbers you calculated are much closer to the truth. But what is the truth anyway? There's plenty of information out there including one or two very thorough studies and a few cogent analyses of the statistical gathering progress overall. I fount a wealth of information by simply doing a google search on "skydiving fatality rate" The fact is, these numbers are not so cut and dry as you'd like them to be. Making your first jump is different from making your 300th. If you are considering your first jump, you'd be much more interested in the rate of fatalities for a first jump in that training method (static line, tandem, aff). If you are considering long term participation in the sport, there are many many factors that affect your risk profile and one number wont give you the full picture - it takes more in depth analysis. Overall, the sport is dangerous, and occasionally fatal. Proceed from there.
  24. Well no one gave you serious answer so here you go.. "freestyle" is a solo competition discipline that is about executing specific poses and moves. "freeflying" is now a competition discipline but that evolved later. As competition it typically involves a duo plus camera. But I expect in the future, we will begin to see 2way, 4way, 6way freefly teams just as in Formation Skydiving today. It has a couple of definitions, here's a couple VRW - vertial relative work - flying relative to others in vertical orientations. In essence this is what a freestyle or skysurfer's camera person is doing - although it may not be strictly vertical. freeflying is being able to fly in any direction at any speed in any body orientation. it's anything you want to do in the air.

    on Fundamentalism

In Frank Zappa's prophetic lyrics. As true today as ever. And equally applicable to either side. DUMB ALL OVER Whoever we are wherever we're from we should have noticed by now our behavior is dumb And if our chances expect to improve it's gonna take a lot more than trying to remove The other race or the other whatever from the face of the planet altogether Now we call it the Earth which is a dumb kinda name but they named it right cause we behave the same We are dumb all over Dumb all over, yes we are Dumb all over, near and far Dumb all over, black and white People - we is not wrapped tight! Nerds on the left, nerds on the right Religous fanatics on the air every night Sayin' the Bible tells the story And makes the details sound real gory 'Bout what to do If the geeks over there Don't believe in the book we got over here You can't run a race without no feet 'N pretty soon there won't be no street For dummies to jog on or doggies to dog on Religous fanatics can make it be all gone (I mean it won't blow up 'N disappear It'll just look ugly for a thousand years...) You can't run a country by a book of religion not by a heap or a lump or a smidgeon No foolish rules of ancient date designed to make you all feel great While you fold, spindle snd mutilate those unbelievers from a neighboring state Two Arms, Two arms hooray that's great two legs ain't bad unless there's a crate They ship the parts to mama in for souvenirs: two ears, Get Down! Not his, not hers, but what the hey? the good book says it's gotta be that way But their book says: REVENGE THE CRUSADES With whips 'n chains 'N hand grenades To arms, to arms at another and another our god says there ain't no other Our god says it's all okay our God says this is the way It says in the book BURN AND DESTROY and repent and redeem and revenge and deploy And rumble thee forth to the land of the unbelieving scum on the other side Cause they don't go for what's in the book and that makes 'em BAD So verily we must choppeth them up and stompeth them down Or rent a nice French bomb to poof them out of existance while leaving their real estate just where we need it To use again for temples in which to praise OUR GOD (Cause he can really take care of business) And when his humble TV servant with humble white hair and humble glasses and a nice brown suit and maybe a blond wife who takes phone calls Tells us our god says it's okay to do this stuff then we gotta do it, 'Cause if we don't do it, we ain't gwine up to hebbin (Depending on which book you're using at the time... Can't use theirs. it don't work. it's all lies. gotta use mine.) Ain't that right? That's what they say every night... every day... Hey, we can't really be dumb if we're just following god's orders Hey, let's get serious...god knows what he's doin' He wrote this book here and in the book it says He made us all to be just like Him so... If we're dumb... Then God is dumb... And maybe even a little ugly on the side
