Yes, and that one reason why "China is doing it wrong." In 2008 sex imbalance (or sex ratio at birth [SRB]) ranged from 108:100 to 130:100 (the higher numbers in places like Guandong province, SW China). And the imbalance is increasing at a higher rate than expected; initial expectations were that the 120:100 (or 1.20 SRB) would not be reached until 2025. India has an SRB of 1.07. Average "natural" SRB values are typically 1.03-1.04. VR/Marg Interesting. I guess I don't know what I was expecting...I think I was picturing the University of Illinois college of engineering writ large in terms of gender balance In any case, do you think that this will lead to a dramatic increase in homosexuality? I can't imagine that their govt or society looks too kindly on it.

Isn't China basically facing a situation where their country will be full of guys and a drastically lower amount of women? From my *very* limited knowledge of what goes on over there, there are rules that only allow you 1 child (or strongly discourage more than 1 child) and thus people try to have a son and not a daughter (and when its found out that it may be a daughter, the pregnancy is 'dealt with'). Will this really help things as far as population control? I just imagine that a lot of people probably go to other countries nearby to find women.

If a ship hit an iceberg and sank today...
FreeflyChile replied to birdlike's topic in Speakers Corner
I would not think that it would--or should--come down to that. We are told that women and men are equals, and are entitled to EQUAL treatment. None of the "some are more equal than others" bullshit. Equal pay, equal opportunity, equal rights... and then we get to "who picks up the dinner check" and things go to shit. I wanted to know, in good faith, what the current protocol is on ships and stuff. Don't think I didn't ask that question of myself when I saw it. I think I would not have been willing to push the button--and I cheered the big black dude when he did the right thing (and then immediately thought, "Yeah, like that would ever happen, though. Condemned criminal suddenly grows a heart of gold? Suuuure.") My dilemma with the explosives on the ships in Batman would have just been "what if this is a trick and this trigger actually detonates OUR ship"? -

Just to be clear, which tyrants are being held at bay at the moment? Well if you cant' think of a handful on your own just off the top of your head, then you need to keep up more with the news. Or, he could be asking a question and that response would simply appear to be dodging it.

What annual income puts you among "The Rich"?
FreeflyChile replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
I am not going to disclose what I make, but in an of itself it would be plenty for one person. However, between paying back law school loans and high credit card bills incurred while putting myself through law school, right now I am living paycheck to paycheck to pay that back. I don't think that makes me 'loserish' - nor is it an inability to save my income. A friend of mine is in even worse shape than I am - went through med school (now is a resident) and put himself in horrible credit card and loan debt to do so. Until he gets a 'real doctor' job he'll probably just be squeaking by. I don't think that's 'loserish' either. -

But much of it is pure realistic satire. And he gets sanctioned. Perhaps my favorite exchange is" No attorney with any real experience hasn't had that situation happen. You get somethign you should win and you don't. But it's also a reflection of other things. You can prepare all you want, over-prepare if necessary, and during the course of trial, a new angle pops up that can cinch it. When he saw the tire marks, he knew that it was his key to victory. It's happened to me. It seems to have happened to others to whom I've spoken. If you want to get an idea about the confusion of trial, and how sometimes things are just stacked against you, check out the film. But I'd like to know what shows give a fairly accurate depiction of your job, and why. Have you tried the opening statement from that movie in court yet? -

I disagree with the notion that life in prison is worse than death. Regardless of what my beliefs may be, there is no concrete evidence of a life after death (not trying to add religion into this discussion). Therefore, I think it's worse to not exist than to exist. Life in prison...you still can have hope about *something* (changes in law, exhonerating evidence, prison break) even if your chances of getting out are ridiculously small. Once you're dead, then you're dead. End of story.
-
While I believe in the death penalty I believe that it should be reserved for murders only. Therefore I think this guy should be executed for the murders of the brother, mother and fiancee, but not for the torture of the kid (as horrible as that is). For things like that, there should be prison with absolutely zero option of ever being released.

What annual income puts you among "The Rich"?
FreeflyChile replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Actually, the Golden State allows people like Kris and I to have the same opportunities as anywhere. High income is funny, since I only once cleared $20k in earnings until I was 29. And, I chose to move to a place like Fresno because of the decreased cost of living. It's not that I couldn't build a life in SoCal, it would simply take longer, and my income can go further here than there. I'd still be struggling to have ONE house in LA, much less my house and another investment rental. Many places in Cali are like buying stocks - I can get three shares at $333 or I can get 10 shares at $100. We chose to live in Cali and practice here because it is where home is. We grew up here and went to school. Frankly, I don't even want to THINK about taking another Bar exam. Unlike you, whose profession relies on the laws of physics, that don't change from place to place, our profession is limiting. So in fact, we have less options than others. But does that make Kris "rich?" Probably not. Hey Kris - why don't you and I put our net worths against others who claim that we could be rich and see who comes out better? I'm sure it would be enlightening to many of them just how little they are in the negative and how much you and I are. Because our investments will pay off in the long run. hahahaha....yeah...I hear that... I owe a nice Porsche, but I don't have a car! -

FreeflyChile replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
1. No, I don't have that option. I'm admitted to the bar in California and no other state. 2. No, my Cali assets don't count because they're owned by the bank, not me. 3. No, I wouldn't be taking my income with me, because if I moved elsewhere, I'd make less money. Were you forced to choose CA? Even if I didn't choose California (and it was pretty much the default, since I was born here, my family is here, and my dad paid my bar exam fees for California and would not have done so for another state), and I went and paid the ridiculous fees to take another bar exam, I wouldn't be taking my income or assets to another state, because I'd be making less money and the bank owns my home. But if the CoL is less elsewhere, it would cancel out. So your higher income allows you to live in the Golden State and not have to live in Illinois like me. The rich have more options than the poor. Do you "have" to live in Illinois? I bet there are areas in southern Wisconsin or western Indiana that are cheaper than the Chicagoland area -
And the place will only be actually open for business a small part of the year.

at first I thought this was discrimation but ...
FreeflyChile replied to Steel's topic in Speakers Corner
I think that this is the case because your lawn guy is likely an illegal immigrant. I knew someone that was in this country illegally (no longer so) that got a car in an area of the country that had a large illegal immigrant population. When buying the car from the dealer they got a ridiculous (like 20%) interest...and the reason that it was likely this high (according to this person) is because their options in terms of financing are limited due to their status. In a lot of cases, these people are unable to go through the normal channels to get financing but are hardworking people that make decent money, so they're able to pay and are willing to pay more. On an quasi-related note, a guy i know that works in real estate was telling me that if he was to buy investment property to rent he'd do so in an up-n-coming area where there are a lot of illegal hispanic people living. The reason is that many of these people make a decent living on what they make but can't own their homes, so they are forced to rent. These people are proud of what they are able to accomplish and take absolutely immaculate care of their homes. -
Forcing businesses to provide for illegal workers
FreeflyChile replied to AggieDave's topic in Speakers Corner
What goes on is that the day laborers/illegal immigrants loiter in the parking lots of the hardware stores. When contractors come in to buy supplies for a job, they often also need some temporary labor to help do that job. So the laborers swarm the trucks of contractors, all jockeying to get on board for some work. The laborers don't work for the hardware store at all - they're just loiterers to them. But while they hang out for hours in the parking lot, they're trashing the place, and frightening customers. Whatever you do when you drive in, try NOT to look like a contractor who's looking for day laborers, or they'll swarm like a hive of Mexican killer bees. I agree with AggieDave that the stores shouldn't have to provide facilities for people who are trespassing on their property. If the city is that concerned about this issue, they should build day labor centers for them, where laborers and contractors can come to match up with each other for services. Home Depot is not the place for this. Just out of curiosity, why don't these business call the cops and get these guys removed from their property? Is it because it benefits them to have their customers have an available supply of labor right there? -
i couldn't afford it at the time and my time was running out. i am sitting on it so to speak, I cannot get the IPT patent anymore but New Zealand belongs to the treaty so no one else in the treaty countries can get it now. It cost me $2k for the NZ one and would have cost me $10k for the IPT so i simply couldn't afford it. I was mainly asking because if you did not file internationally, your ability to prevent others abroad from infringing may be limited.
-
that is not true, thsat is why they have the preliminary application(very basic overview) once that is filed your priority date is from that time and you can contact experts in the field to see if it is worth pursuing, you will be safe from being scammed like the poor origonal poster. I have a patent for intergrated camera helmets of any shape or form. http://www.iponz.govt.nz/pls/web/DBSSITEN.main?p_access_no=4BE2F56281CC4CA355033A3A244A0DC1 The link wont take you through to the patent so type in the words 'camera system' in the patent search field, and click the 'Submit query' button. My name, Rhys Tristan Kempen. i am no expert in the field but had a good idea a few years ago, the preliminary application is there so you can make the patent public before the complete specification is filed. Did you do any type of international filing for this patent?

How to make energy independence happen - an example
FreeflyChile replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
This is great. One large difference between a country like Denmark and the US is that there is a different kind of "cultural inertia" (for lack of a better term) for a country this large compared to a smaller one. That is, I think that it is easier to rally a country that has a smaller population into change than it is to get it going in a country this size. There's less resistance to the idea and I think the average person in the smaller country will see more of a direct benefit to him/herself faster. The other side of this is that in a large country - once the movement gets started and has legs on its own, the momentum of the movement is likely to carry progress farther than that of the smaller country. No evidence to back this up, of course. Just a thought of mine. -
Whats your favorite sporting moment and why?
FreeflyChile replied to bluepill's topic in The Bonfire
Though I thoroughly enjoyed (like many Chicagoans) the Bulls of the 90s, I don't think that I ever liked following the NBA as much as I enjoy watching college basketball now. Therefore, my favorite moment has to be the Elite 8 game between my beloved Illini and Arizona from 2005, played at the Allstate Arena. That comeback was unbelievable and still gives me chills to think about. -

I guess the subtlety of my earlier post was lost on some. Also, if the language is what determines who won the war, then why are so many signs around my city in; Spanish, Vietnamese, Hebrew, Chinese and Korean? A language won a war? Did it give the combatants a decided tactical advantage?
