  1. Its fine to think that they are brave because they did something that you would not do. I think that people that handle poisionous snakes are brave, its something that I would not do. However, flying a plane into a building is suicide. Strapping a bomb to yourself and blowing it up is suicide. I do not think that people who commit suicide are brave. I think they are crazy. So, now I think that it comes down to semantics. If thats the way you feel. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  2. the hijackers that took part in 9/11 were not brave, they were cowards. They were not brave enough to stand up for what is right....humanity. They were willing to lay down their lives to kill thousands, that is lunacy. Bravery is a commendation that I would give to the following people: http://www.mishalov.com/Citations.html http://www.mishalov.com/Living_MoH_Recipients.html The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  3. a pic of me geeking the camera at the ICDC training range. I was overwatch in case one of them decided to do something stupid. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  4. Maybe parents should sign a waiver so their kids can play on the play ground. I, like everyone else do not want to see my child get hurt, but for crying out loud, what are they supposed to do? Maybe just get rid of playgrounds altogether. Then they don't have to worry about kids getting hurt on them. I've got a better idea, maybe we should outlaw playground equipment, that would make the world a better place. Then, we should sue all the playground equipment manufactures(sp?) for producing equipment that has caused so much pain and suffering. Then we should demand impeachment of anyone elected to a school board who voted in favor of installing playground equipment. Plus we should appoint a "task force" to study the effects of playground injuries, and make recommendations to the president to have national "playground tragedy awareness week". We need to call in psychologists en masse to talk with anyone who has been affected in any way by playground disasters. Then congress needs to enact some policy and trust fund for the victims and families of any playground disasters. Then create laws forbidding the production, importation or distribution of any playground equipment. The president needs to declare an emergency so FEMA can mobilize and remove any playground equipment and any residual effects of playground equipment. Then our children will truly be safe The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  5. There is a stipulation that says that as an officer you cannot give an unlawful order. Ordering someone to sit and listen to you about religion would be considered an unlawful order and therefore would be required to not be followed. Bill I agree with you on this one. Maybe I misstated, or maybe you misheard(read). However when I said That means that a teacher cannot force students to listen to any specific religion. It also means that a police officer cannot stop you on the side of the road to tell you about Jesus. It also means that a government official cannot require that you are a certain religion in order to get a job. However what it doesnt mean is that I am forbidden to discuss my religion in an open setting at work, especially with other people of my religion. It also doesnt mean that I cant say things that might be offensive to you because you are a different religion (doesn't say much for courtesy but I'm making a point here). It also doesn't say that I am forbidden to invite you to a religious ceremony, gathering etc. I hope that clears things up. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  6. So, sre you saying that since I am a member of the Armed Forces that I am not allowed to be religious? Or, I am not allowed to talk about religion at work? Or, I am not allowed to make comments about other people's religions? Or, I that an utterance of religion is unconstitutional? In my 7 years on active duty every function that occured was preceeded with prayer. I don't think that it is forcing anyone to be religious. It allows people the opportunity to express themselves. Besides, isnt religion a personal thing? How can I force my religion on someone else? Do I twist their arm and all of a sudden they believe? Or because they heard me pray they are all of a sudden so moved that they convert and stop all the hedonistic behavior that qualified them as heathens? Seperation of church and state means that Government cannot sponser a religion and then require people to attend. I think that people getting up in arms over stuff like this forget that in a public place I can say just about whatever I want, and you have to hear it. That is the freedom of speech. So, if I feel that I want to express my religiosity, I have the same right to do so as you do to disregard it. Or, are you saying that my rights mean less than yours? 7. I am hoping that this is just some sarcasm. However, if its not.....My question for you is: what propaganda sold you on this idea? Where did you learn this? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  8. I just got the funniest visual of your avatar and banging its head against the wall....I had to laugh about it for a few minutes. Thanks for the humor. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  9. So you are saying that it is OK to stand by and let genocide happen because "we" shouldn't kill anyone? edit:spelling The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  10. There are people that no matter what evidence is presented, will only hear what they want. There is a guy at school that was born in An Nasiriyah, and fled with his parents to the US about 10 years ago. He would thank me for going over there almost on a daily basis. Morally, I think that we are obligated to be involved in the many conflicts and problems in the world. I think that it is despicable that we so concerned with the impact on "our" lives, especially when there are literally thousands of people dying. If we are supposed to hold the moral high ground, how can we stand idly by and watch people being killed? Too much commitment? too much money? too much reality? Those people are dead, and no amount of ridiculous "sanctions" are going to stop it. The moral high ground is held by people who are willing to do what it takes to be moral. Not by those willing to let people die, merely because it isnt headlining our news agencies. I thank you for what you are doing over there. I will be back over there in a few more years. Don't have too much fun, and be safe. Oh, and I know why we are over there. Sorry about the rant The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  11. I am not going to speculate on whether or not this event happened. However, soldiers in the US Army (usually) carry one of two weapons for their personal weapon. Those two are the 9mm and many different versions of the M16. If shot at point blank range (with either) the only way to collect the bullets would be to dig them out of the wall. If you think that they would be able to find 4 bullets in a body, you have never seen these weapons at work. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  12. I went out and checked, and yep.....still there. Must just be in your area. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  13. I have an interesting story about waffle house..... Years ago, in High School after a buddy of mine got into a confrontation with a school maintenence man we ditched 4th hour to go get lunch. We decided that waffle house would be a good idea because it had th all you can eat for like 4.99. Anyhow, while waiting for the food to arrive a guy bursts through the door and runs toward the back of the resteraunt he screamed "you have got to help me". A second later another guy bursts through the door leading a rottwieler on a chain. The second guy sics the aformentioned rottwieler on the first guy. Unfortunately while unassing the booth that we were sitting in, my buddy intercepted the rottwieler "long bomb" and caught a set of teeth in the leg, just missing the jewels by an inch or two. Anyway, after the cops showed up....idiot #1 was idiot#2's brother and they were fighting over a girl. So, is this a common occurence? I have a hard time going into WH since. It was like a Jerry Springer episode.....live. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  14. Here's my sign.... A few years ago I was working as a finance manager at a car dealership. I was young...and new at the game and still learning the ropes. One day a rep from one of the banks came by to drum up some business with us. We were making small talk and she asked how business was, I replied with "better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but not by much." She became distant and really started conversing only with my boss. She left soon after, my boss came back into my office a little later laughing his ass off. He then tells me that she had a glass eye. Boy, did I feel like a jerk. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  15. What would you prefer I say? Quick news flash, the world is not perfect. Unfortunatly people have to make decisions on what is right for the nation. That is bigger than this one person or plural persons. Now I dont agree with everything that everyone does, I just try to make the best of the situation at hand. If you are looking for utopia, it doesnt exist. Complaining about the people held in gitmo on DZ.com is fairly futile. Nothing will be changed here, everyone still walks away with the same opinion as when they started. Maybe through some cathartic channel of expression this makes people feel better. If we took as much time actively doing something in society as we do bitching on DZ.com something might change. My question for you tom, what would you rather do? Terrorism is something that will not go away. THere are people out there willing to trade their lives for a kill. There are two ways to win that war, one is passivity (a war of attrition). Or, we go hunt the people down, and kill them before they have a chance to do any harm. If you expect rational thought from this group of people, you are not thinking rationally. I think that if this guy staying in prison for the rest of his life makes it impossible for him to kill any americans, let him rot. I know, that is not the american way. We should allow him to express himself. But when that expression is a bomb, or machine gun fire aimed at america I dont want to be the target. I have in the past spent a significant portion of my life in the service of the people of this country. I plan to finish out my career going and doing the bad things neccesary so that people will have the ability to say what they want, and do what they want. It sounds as though you would rather give up the legacy that our forefathers left us so that this piece of scum can roam freely. Remember that there is no moral majority when it comes to terrorist tactics, only the people left alive at the end of the day. You obviously have not seen the horrific things up close and personal that terrorists do. No amount of hugging, kissing or apologizing will stop the desire for these people to kill. The only thing that will satiate them is for you and I to die. I don't know about you, I don't feel like dying. I know, its a savage world that we live in. Oh yea, flame on!! The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  16. Not once in my meaningless rambling did I ever say that we should just disregard the law and throw people into prison for years at a time without access to lawyers. Infact I think (I am not too sure) that I said that this guy would and should get a trial. My bitch is that people actually get worked into a frenzy that this guy/mercenary/idiot/whatever-you-want-to-call-him is in gitmo as a victim of circumstance. This guy is there for trying to kill Americans. But, if it will make you feel better....He should have a trial, by military tribunal. He should have all the rights of.....um......dammit, I knew that he gets rights.....oh yea under the Geneva Convention, not the constitution of the US (something about not being a citizen). Prisoners of war MUST be: - Treated humanely with respect for their persons and their honour. - Enabled to inform their next of kin and the Central Prisoners of War Agency (ICRC, the International Red Cross) of their capture. - Allowed to correspond regularly with relatives and to receive relief parcels. - Allowed to keep their clothes, feeding utensils and personal effects. - Supplied with adequate food and clothing. - Provided with quarters not inferior to those of their captor's troops. - Given the medical care their state of health demands. - Paid for any work they do. - Repatriated if certified seriously ill or wounded, (but they must not resume active military duties afterwards) . - Quickly released and repatriated when hostilities cease. http://www.ppu.org.uk/learn/texts/doc_geneva_con.html I think that we have been following those rules (I don't know, I am not in gitmo checking up on this). And after the conflict ceases, he should be tried for any war crimes. The whitehouse guarantees the Geneva COnvetion will apply to the Taliban.http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/05/20030507-18.html I hope that clears things up. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  17. How many in Iraq flew in from Australia? I dont think that you have any idea actually how many people are in prison in Iraq (no I dont have a number, but I will try to find one). The next difference is that we let 400,000 people disappear into the countryside in Iraq. Members of the Iraqi Army were allowed to return to their homes, we figured it would be better in rebuilding the nation. Besides we couldn't capture all of them on the way in. This guy got caught. He will have a trial. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  18. This is why you are the lawyer and I am not. I think that one fault of the US Justice system is that we have to have a trial half the time. If someone shoots at cops, and takes them on a 100mph chase they should not be given protection under the law. That person has victimized society and should be removed from society. Most people like to think that everyone is in their right mind all the time (and when they arent, it can be fixed). The truth of the situation is that there are people out there that have no place in society. These people need to be removed, not coddled. Is this guy's freedom is more valuble than societies' wellbeing? What is more important? the lives of 11 people? or the lives 3000? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  19. As I said before I believe that they should have trials. If he is innocent then it will be proven....just like if he is guilty. I am a skeptic of the whole process. What is known is that this guy was in Afghanistan trying to kill American troops, for you in other countries that might be just what you are looking for but it does not bode well for me. If the shoe fits.... In my humble opinion (for what its worth) I think that he is guilty. But then again, my opinion is kinda skewed considering the fact that I have put my life on the line and have something invested in the conflict. It's easy for others to sit back and say that things are cut and dry without anything invested. One other thing, don't most tribunals wait until after the conflict is over? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  20. This falls under the same heading as insurgent, freedom fighter, or any other name you want to put on it. Not neccesarily a "terrorist". however, I am not the on-sight expert. I just gathered my conjectures from the article in the same manner that you did. You assumed he is innocent because he didn't own up to it. I assume he is guilty because he was caught in the act. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  21. I am all for a trial, I never said to not have a trial. I just think that assuming that he is innocent is a little ridiculous. That is why it falls under the heading of military tribunal. He was caught in the act.....guilty! Now as far as his punishment, that will be up to the tribunal....right? Now, the article said that military prosecuters are blowing the whistle. That there isn't enough evidence to convict him. I dont think that he would be in gitmo had he just been jaywalking. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  22. Maybe I am just delusional here. THis guy gets caught with the taliban and you think that he is innocent. How about the guy that with 4 other people robs a bank....when he gets arrested just says, "oh, I'm not with those guys, I was going to make a deposit." The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  23. You forgot that part. I figure that you meant to include it so I put it in there for you. Of course I guess he is just a victim? He was only there visiting relatives? Maybe he was kidnapped and forced to go to Afghanistan and spend time with the Taliban? Which one is it? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  24. I watched the first in a series last night. In my opinion the show was ridiculous from the outset, and not based on any one person's experiences in Iraq. "Over There" attempts to demonize the soldiers that are serving over there. The depiction of the characters is terrible. The group of 6-8 soldiers walk around calling each other by nicknames, and doing things that are against policy. Making this the perfect propaganda against the action in Iraq. The plot was terrible and the military obviously had no oversight in the making of this series. This is especially apparent when the company commander has his chin strap on upside down. The troops portrayed are undisciplined, and claim that they are not there for th oil.....just to kick Iraqi asses. In the concluding scene a couple of these troops are stowing away in a convoy to go to anouther "supply dump" a couple miles away to get some booze sent over in Listerine bottles. The convoy pulls to the side of the road and one truck runs over a mine. One of soldiers is severly injured, and they quickly toss (and I do mean toss) him onto a stretcher and into a Huey. I won't say that I agree with everything that is going on over there. However, it seems to me that demnizing the people that are willing to go out and insure the freedoms that you and I enjoy is a good idea. I spent 356 days there, and very little in this show actually happened, or is happening there. I think the show is garbage. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
  25. Kallend, I respect you as a person who has a lot of insight on a lot of different issues. My question for you is how does this really fit the issue? Troops in Saudi were put there as a deterrent against another invasion of Kuwait as well as a deterrent from attacking Saudi. I think that either I am misguided or you are trying to say that the people who have suicide bombed, flown airplanes into buildings, and a dozen other activities outside this their home turf are rational thinkers. If what you said is the motivation why haven't they stopped their attacks now that we (being the US) are pulling all troops out of Saudi? Another reason for Saudi was strategic location. As far as how I would feel...If I was living in Saudi and I was actually a Saudi? I probably would not be concerned with what anybody was doing in my country as long as it was bringing me more money....you forget they are rich over there. Rich off of the money they get from Americans that buy their oil. Rich enough that they pay Americans to come over and work the oil fields. Hell they hire people to come in from other countries to pick up the Garbage. But once again...you expect them to be rational thinkers. But, rational thinking people dont blow up buildings for their god. Now....you answer the question, How would you feel? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
