  1. The showers & toilets have been replaced, and the bunkhouse repainted. I still wouldn't recommend the bunkhouse, but the showers are pretty damn nice now.
  2. Well done mate. Glad to hear things are progressing...
  3. One minor correction: in Australia the minimum age for a tandem is 14. I believe New Zealand (and South Africa?) have no age minimum.
  4. Tonto was smart, uncompromising, unafraid to call a spade a spade, yet compassionate. He was one of those I respected most, and I was seriously looking forward to sharing a beer with him. Unfortunately all that just makes the loss harder to bear. Fly free. Blue skies.
  5. If it's a sweet rum, soda (& lime, to taste) can be good.
  6. My altitudes, for a 180 on a Samurai 135 @ 1.5: Position: 1100 Downwind: 800 Turn: 500 (actual turn is about 460-480).
  7. Until recently I had an Optima - small, easy to set up, reliable, cheap & easily available batteries. Downsides: Not waterproof (not so big a deal in a helmet). Not very physically tough. I've seen more than one crack while in a helmet.
  8. But did you buy one for her too? Congrats!
  9. I have an Icon. I like it. A friend has a Wings. He likes it. I'd base a purchase on a) service, b) cost, and c) how it looks. Try contacting both companies and seeing how responsive they are to your questions...
  10. Windows supports multiple pointing devices. I'm not entirely sure how it behaves in practice, though I believe that there's only one pointer and as you move each device it affects the cursor. You might find this useful. Or possibly not. Note: anything that involves installing drivers has a higher than normal possibility of trashing your system. edit: There's an official Microsoft SDK available, but I'm not sure how useful that is to you.
  11. A lot of Brits do their AFF in Spain or the USA because of the weather. Have a look around the UK boards (I think they're at ukskydiver.co.uk) and see what the locals suggest...
  12. Scott's course is more practical. Brian's covers more of the theory behind how canopies fly. You'd learn a lot from either.
  13. There's two Camerons on the Aussie team. That one is "Putz". Top bloke. If he's out this weekend, buy him a bourbon and tell him I said he's a wanker.
  14. Cool. See ya when we see ya then.
  15. Yep, it's definitely welcoming to new jumpers. Bring your license(s), logbooks, etc. If you don't have an A license yet, contact the DZ now so they can check in with your home DZ if necessary. If you don't have your own gear yet, also contact them now so they can work to make sure suitable rental gear is available. Early is good. Manifest and the coffee shop are open from about 06:40 onwards, and first load usually goes sometime between 07:00 and 07:45. If you have a car, just head South on the M5/Hume Highway, and take the Picton exit. If you don't, the DZ runs a bus that leaves the City Centre at 7am. There's a bunkhouse at the DZ (bring pillows & sleeping bag), but it's not exactly luxurious. There's also a bar on the DZ.
  16. If you want to front riser down to get penetration, leave off the front risers by 300ft or so. That'll give your canopy plenty of time to transition back to normal flight before you need to land. Note: flying in front risers in turbulence is not recommended. If letting up the front risers at 300ft means that you're not going to make it back, then you should be landing out anyway. Cutting it that fine is a recipe for problems if, say, the wind comes up a couple of knots more.
  17. There's quite a few freeflyers around. Many of them show up with plans for the day though, so if you rock up fresh, there mightn't be too many just hanging around. Best bet: show up, say hi, make friends, jump. 1hr in a car. Far too fucking long on the train. Sydney's public transport network outside the CBD is woeful. The DZ operates a bus out every morning at 7am. 6 jumps on a Sat or Sun is pretty trivial. The last few weekends I've been out have had the XL doing about 20 loads and the Skyvan 5-10. Are you coming for a holiday, or to move here?
  18. The owner of that site is on dz.com as MakeItHappen.
  19. 1- Look up a local dance school. 2- Call them, explain your predicament, and ask for a private lesson with one of their instructors. 3- Hand over some money. 4- Learn to dance. 5- Pull chicks.
  20. Some of you might find this interesting. It's part of an article about US laws that aren't enforced, and deals with legal replacements for illegal (Schedule I) drugs.
