  1. If you are falling down with 500km/h and your AAD fires ( at the altitude it should), the blown reserve will be last of your concerns... First the body parts will start falling off, IF the reserve menage to leave the freebag on time...so basically, that's all. If the AAD misfire, read only the first part of the above. 2. Nope. It should be A1B1A2B2.... and for the rear link...C1 D1 C2 D2 C3 D3 C4 C5 I don't have the manual at home so I can't be 100% sure that this is how it should be, but this is the logical way... If in doubt, ask the manufacturer "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  3. John, What if you sew the tabs to the top of the freebag around the grommet? Any cons about that? "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  4. Not so rare as you think. I can send you more videos if you wish. I'd like to ask the people who buy the Skyhook so they can chop lower, can you be sure that the Skyhook will work as a MARD in your case? And if somebody can explain to me , how it's possible that a 3 sq.ft reserve PC will out drag 100+ sq ft main in less than a second.... The only time when Skyhook works 100% is the UPT promo video. 5. When would the skyhook disconnect and act as a normal rsl? The red safety tie thread prevents it from slipping off unless the reserve pc is activated. I don't know. It just does . Here is a really nice POV video . http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10150255643198247&set=o.64761516148&type=2&theater "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  6. Can you please make a picture of this? I'm having a hard time understanding how it was misrouted. And if you can make a picture of how it's packed now it would be great. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  7. Sure it was. Unless you have it on video, everything is speculation. But speculation or not, the described scenario was definitely possible. What about the student in Chicago 2 years ago. Not a fatality , but serious injury. For its short life Skyhook has handful modifications and there are more to come. Not to mention the disconnection rate. When the Skyhook disconnects, it works as good as the normal RSL, just 5-6 times more expensive. Don't get me wrong. If you gonna do something stupid like cutting away below 500 ft, you'll be better with one, assuming that it will work as a MARD ,but no guarantees there. Other than that, I don't see the advantage. 8. The new bridle is made from Type 12
  9. Rich cougar doing AFF??? You've gotta be kidding me "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  10. Nope.... The Drogue ( PC ) on a Sigma Tandem collapses before it pulls the bag. The Racer RPC generate 190 lbs pull force at terminal. The problem with the skyhook is that the system is complicates and yet unreliable. Sometimes it does its job, sometimes it doesn't. And that has nothing to do with the drag of the main. Spinning main will produce a lot more drag than any RPC and yet, skyhooks disconnects. Check this video out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzKd8e47icY A streamer will produce enough force to stand the tandem pair up, but apparently less than the mesh less Vector 2 RPC. I can't believe that... "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  11. This is probably one of the oldest myths in skydiving, that if you cutaway your main on the ground on a windy day and you forget to release your RSL, your reserve will open and will start dragging you....... The truth is that the only thing that would happen then is make your rigger happy/unhappy. I've seen about a dozen occasions when a student didn't disconnect his RSL prior a ground cutaway , and in more that half of them the freebag stayed in the container. The only thing that worries me ( not really ) about the single sided RSL is broken risers. In my almost 15 years in skydiving I've seen only 2 broken risers ( type 17 ). Both times the risers were way beyond 1000 jumps, and the jumpers were heavy . Remember, hitting the ground with some twist on your reserve is better than with your reserve still in the freebag. The first situation might be survivable
  12. Packing comes to mind... "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  13. Question for you... Total malfunction...the jumper freaks out because he can't find his reserve handle. He stops arching and he goes butt down.....the AAD fires. Which direction the RPC will go and what will be the angle of pulling ? "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  14. Unlike CYPRES, Vigil has single firing speed/altitude for the student mode. 3.3.2. “STUDENT” Mode The Vigil® releases at 1040 Ft. (317 meters) and below till 150 Ft. (46 meters), if the freefall speed is equal or superior to 20 m/sec. (45 mph or 72 km/h)* 20 m/sec is quite high rate of descent. Most likely a big student canopy will not reach that speed with only one toggle released "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  15. Why do you think that it's an assumption? And I never said that Airtec wants to blame the jumper. What I said that they don't want to be sued when their unit did its job, but someone else's product failed.... For you might be a ridiculous reason, but Airtec had to spend money in the past to defend themselves in the court , so I guess they know better. And of course they are aware of the problem with some containers. USPA is aware of the problem as well. Even the container manufacturers are aware of the problem with their rigs, but as long as the TSO is valid and people are buying the rigs, there's no reason for change. Someone might argue that there's no problem at all since it happens once-twice per year over some million jumps all over the world and statistically they will be right. What about that?! "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  16. What you are missing here is that to have the reserve pin pulled from the RSL, the main have to be out first. Here the big part of the problem is the main being still in the rig. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  17. To get themselves off the hook in the courtroom when somebody hit the ground with the freebag still in the container. They just want to give the responsibility to the jumper . That's all "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  18. I would guess that the rig in question was made in 2010 or later.... "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  19. The PC is cocked. This is a Wings PC and they don't color the kill line with marker like others do. They sew 2 rows (maybe 3, I'm not really sure ) of straight stitch with green thread. If you take another look, you will see the stitches "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  20. I tend to disagree with you. I know four jumpers who have had PC in tow malfunctions because of misrouted bridles. Does that mean that those were gear design faults ? And the low jump number is not an excuse for not knowing/checking your gear. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  21. This is the problem John Sherman is talking about for some years now. Low drag reserve PC's.... "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
  22. One really important question pops in my head. Were the risers placed over the flap that has a warning note :" place the main risers on top of this flap". If "yes"we are talking about a riser cover failure. If "not", we are talking about jumper failure. And one more thing to think about. Several years ago Bill Booth made a statement that the magnetic riser covers are the only way to go and in the near future , most of the manufacturers will have them. Four years later non ( or maybe one ) of the existing designs were changed to magnets. Not only that, but one manufacturer went back from magnets to stiffeners. A bad design is a bad design. Period. Doesn't matter if it's magnets, velcro or stiffeners. And btw, Vector now has third generation magnetic riser covers. Apparently the previous two were not good enough. 23. To the OP, The above is the best post so far.....buy local, talk to your rigger, call the manufacturers and get a demo. "My belief is that once the doctor whacks you on the butt, all guarantees are off" Jerry Baumchen
