  1. Research this some more. Christians aren't against stem cell research. They believe it should be privately funded, not federally funded. They are not your enemy, shaiziel. By the way, "terminating an unwanted pregnancy" is otherwise known as killing a baby. But I'm not getting into politics. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not. 2. P.S. Not all Christians even agree on the views represented on your list. So you can't call those "Christian views" as tho' they represent all of Christianity. Christianity isn't an organized religion, altho' certainly some of the denominations are. Christianity is made up of a diverse group of people with different opinions, ranging from "We need to be a force for good in the world" to "We need to share the good news of Jesus Christ with whoever will listen" to "Let's all just mind our own business." What they DO have in common (I'm talking about real Christians, as defined by the bible) is one God, one Savior (Jesus Christ), and the eagerness to follow and please Him. 3. Yes, but these are Conservative-held views (as well as Christian values). Politics. Not organized church-sponsored special interests. But I'm not gonna' get into discussing politics. I'll stick to Christianity and the bible. I don't want to get angry. Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  4. Windcatcher, see post above. Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  5. Here's a "5 minute Introduction to Buddhism" if anyone's interested in what "it" is. http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/5minbud.htm It starts out saying it's a religion, then kinda' transitions into being a philosophy. And this http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html ranks the major world religions (including buddhism). Isn't an official, gov't-researched and -run webpage, but it gives a general idea. 6. This is funny. I mean, "Christian" by what definition? Followers of Christ? "Born-again"? Church-goers? Can't be even one of those three possible definitions. Where'd you get the 90% statistic? Did it define "Christian"? Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  7. I'm curious about this. How does my (or stevorino's) faith in Christ have real, tangible effects on your everyday life? (I sure hope you're not going to say that conservatives'-- who seem to be confused with Christians by liberals-- desire for stuff like the definition of marriage to remain unchanged, or wanting to ban the federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, is interfering with your life.) 8. For shaiziel (it probably won't make sense to anyone else): Hope for the heart ("emotion/feeling"): Test it by an objective standard Hope for the mind ("thought/reasoning"): 2 Cor. 3:14-17 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20cor.%203:14-17&version=51) Hope for the will ("action/desire"): Romans 8:9,12-14 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=romans%208:9,12-14;&version=51;) Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  9. I take it someone's been reading "Christ Conspiracy" propaganda! If you really care about arriving at the truth, you'll run out and get something like Evidence That Demands a Verdict, read that, and then make up your mind. But for starters, you could take a look at this http://tektonics.org/copycat/osy.html, which is an article called "Walk Like an Egyptian: Comparing Osiris, Horus, and Jesus." Forget that suggestion. It would be better if you simply read the gospel of John--- in the bible, that is. Would you do that? Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  10. I suppose pagans don't miss a beat either! John, in case you missed it, see reply to beowulf above. I love it when you pretend to misunderstand just to get in a swipe. Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  11. I'm sorry; I used a metaphor ("heart") in my homemade definition, and I shouldn't have. Is the following less confusing? "Faith is assurance in the adequacy of the evidence." Yeah, actually I even like that better.
  12. How did you come to that conclusion from the biblical principle which Royd mentioned???? Well, you're right about one thing-- subjective experiences alone--of God's presence-- don't provide evidence for the existence, etc. of God.
  13. Well, I know I shouldn't bother when it comes to convincing them of truth--- that's not my job anyway, thankfully. I sort of see my job here as correcting all the misinformation that's out there about Christianity and the bible and Jesus, etc. I love the truth of God-- it is so pure and so perfect--- I just hate seeing it misrepresented. I'll go for weeks without even looking at this forum, and then I take a peek. Then I have to jump in. Paj does an excellent job of laying out the truth, but he's got to take a break now and then. But thanks for your support. Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  14. Please show me where I describe faith as having no evidence. (I don't think you're reading very carefully.) Absolutely NOT! Feelings/emotional experiences (for lack of a better term) can be notoriously misleading if left untested, using some objective standard. Yes, you are right, the heart CAN be deceiving and often is. And yes, you remember it correctly being written somewhere in my precious bible (tho' I picked up on your sarcastic tone!). The entire sentence is: "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick; who can understand it?"
  15. Your reasoning lacks something. For one thing, evidence doesn't always lead to proof. Sometimes it falls short. You can have some compelling evidence (such as science had for the atom), but no beyond-the-shadow-of-a-doubt-PROOF. However, the compelling evidence may lead you to a beyond-a-reasonable-doubt-PROOF. I have evidence that someone going by the user name "shaiziel" typed your post. But I have only have a "degree" of proof (more like probability) that it was actually him. I could say I believe beyond a reasonable doubt that "shaiziel" wrote the sentences above. There's the chance, though, that his wife, or girlfriend, or son typed it surreptitiously! So I don't have definite proof. Faith doesn't eliminate the need for evidence, because faith needs evidence in order to exist in the first place. When you say, "God requires faith," do you know what "faith" means in this context?
  16. Well of course you can... because it has no bearing on your life and your choices.
  17. Hi, Andy. Can you give me an example from scripture of the word faith (or belief or trust) referring to assurance without any basis?
  18. You don't understand the nature of faith? Being a scientist? Do you have conFIDence in the concept of atoms as science has explained them? I'm sure you do. Yet you've NEVER seen one. Is your faith that they exist and that you understand much about them based on NOTHING? or is there evidence behind your faith?
  19. You, too, Beowulf. I wish I could make you see the difference, but I know that's not possible since your mind is closed. Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  20. I'm sorry you don't see the difference. I would think you, being a scientist, could.
  21. You're using the word "faith" here as tho' faith has no grounds... as tho' it's merely based on feelings. Faith= the assurance of the heart in the adequacy of the evidence
  22. Pajarito isn't judging whether you, personally, are good or not. Only God can do that, and the link in Paj's sig line merely takes you to a site that allows you to judge yourself, in a sense, by taking a test based on God's standard of the moral law. That's how Jesus helped at least one man we know of discover whether or not he was "good." Having said that though, all men and women are "bad" in the sense that we are disconnected from God by our sin. Man was made to be connected to God; our sin has broken the relationship; and we can't be restored to Him except through Christ. That's the gospel in a nutshell. [I realize that you weren't addressing me, but I wanted to jump into the conversation. I hope choosing this spot was OK.]
  23. Thanks, Pops. Being in the sport for 99 years, you oughta' know just about everybody. Also, I just noticed that this page http://www.skyfestboogie.com/jumpschedulesignup.htm has been updated with a bit more information. For Wednesday, it says: for Thursday: I also noticed that there are 3 seminars planned: Looks pretty cool! But what's the "Open Forum"? Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
  24. Don't worry, there are probably lots of us in the same boat. I have a really basic question about Skyfest, since it's all about encouraging the low-timers and new 'A's out there (like me). Of course, I realize that lots of very experienced peeps will be there too--- to meet up with old friends and have fun. It just seems a little bit intimidating, being such a newbie (and a bit shy), and not knowing very many people that are at my experience level or people who'd be willing to jump with me and teach me a thing or two. So what I'm wondering is, How much guidance will the new jumpers get? I mean, are we responsible for organizing and implementing our own jumps, or will there be load organizers and instructors to show us the ropes and get jumpers together? 25. This is what I am hoping! Keeping fingers crossed! Blue skies & happy jitters ~Mockingbird "Why is there something rather than nothing?"
