  1. Let me guess. You're not a gun owner and have never studied armed self defense, right? Nothing wrong with that, but the "wounding shot" is one of the most widely held misconceptions concerning self defense. Neither is "shoot to kill" the correct mindset. The appropriate way to describe legal self-defense with a firearm is "shoot to stop." The most effective way to stop an attacker is firing center mass- the chest. This may kill him, but that is not the intended outcome. Stopping him is. If he dies as a result, that's terrible but he brought it on himself by attacking. You would be correct in thinking that I have never been trained in armed self defense. I am not anti-gun however, and grew up shooting guns, both rifles and handguns. The central mass is certainly where I would aim but at that distance I would not be hitting him in the neck or upper chest. Thinking about it when the attacker is coming at you from 8 to 9 feet away is not a good idea. An atacker can close 21 feet in less that two seconds. This guy was less than half that distance. The only thing you have time to think is "front sight - squeeeeeze." That is at a full run however and I doubt this man was moving that fast if he was as intoxicated as the article implied. My reaction would definitely vary depending on his closing speed. If he was moving slowly and gave me the chance to warn him a couple of times before I shoot I certainly would. If he was moving that slow I would also opt for a shot toward his legs/feet first if it would still allow me enough time to get off another round or two at his central mass if that didn't stop him. 2. It would have been ok because his right hand was tied up as well He was sitting in his truck to, and it is much easier to swing into a vehicle than it is out. Greenie in training.

    Age survey...

If I get my first BASE jump before bridge day it will be 21 if I have to wait until bridge day I will be 22. Greenie in training.
  4. I have had people shake my hand while they were drunk and just forget they were shaking it. They won't stop until you physically pull your hand away. Had a guy do that after I threw him out of a party at my friends house because he was getting mouthy, I was sure he was going to try to take a swing while he had my right hand tied up but he never did. 5. He didn't ask the man to stop or try shooting him somewhere other than the neck and chest. I would try to not take a fatal shot at someone only wielding a club. However if he felt his life was in danger he had every right to do what he did. It seems they want stricter self defense laws that would require the gun owner to think more before acting. 6. I don't really have any set goals. Mainly I am wanting to work on my canopy control and freeflying. I would like to be able to fly my sit very well and be doing a decent stand by the end of the season. As for canopy control I would like to be doing small hooks at the end of the season, not going to push that one to hard though until I feel more comfortable with it. Greenie in training.

  14. I had one pictured at the end of a thin peninsula though. I think with enough momentum an aircraft carrier would make it through that. Greenie in training.
  15. I think the aircraft carrier would still win if it came down to it though. Greenie in training.

  17. It only took me a month to get my license jumping every weekend. Get to the DZ early (I never got there before noon and still made it). Pay attention to your instructors. Learn to pack on a weather hold or have someone teach you how durring the week. Oh and make sure your bank account stays drained from jumping. Greenie in training.

  21. I talk to people on the phone all day at work and if I have to confirm a bunch of info in the middle somewhere I will ask... "And is the letter 2 your favorite color?" Also there was a girl at my house playing pool with me about a week ago and after she racked she put the rack around her neck. Seeing that I quickly replied with "nice rack" and got a good laugh out of her. Greenie in training.
