  1. I hate to burst your bubble Grey...but the freefall speed record with basically normal gear is 330.21mph http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_skydiving just about anyone can go over 180 in freefall FYI hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  2. Very, very true! I learned the hard way...but survived in spite of all the screw ups I did before reading and rereading micrometeorology by dennis pagan and everything else I could find on the subject. That was after losing many friends and crashing myself when learning to hang glide in the mid 1970's. I think we are losing many proxy wingsuiters for the same reason...a small gust...a thermal off the rocks...or what I think got westcoastSD...lee side rotors. Never fly the lee side of mountains...no matter where the vultures are flying...they are shitty flyers...never follow a vulture...I've seen them soar the lee side rotor and bounce off of the trees...stupid birds. hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  3. Be very careful with advice from people you don't know...I believe westcoastsd was killed speed flying a mountain in my back yard 24 hours after giving that glowing recommendation on ground launching a stiletto. I don't know all the details I hope he was flying a para glider, that would make way more sense. I have flown that mountain numerous times in a hang glider. The day he attempted to fly it was a very turbulent day and a front had just moved through, the conditions were very unstable. Flying close to any mountain should only be done in the most calm conditions. That mountain gave me worst CAT(clear air turbulence)that I've ever felt. It slammed me into the gliders keel three times and almost knocked me out. http://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/20130922/articles/130929873 Condolences for all family and friends. 4. Never met him that I know of...but...I had a chance to jump one of the very first wingsuits...I was too tall for that suit...never jumped one yet...but sure plan to before I get too old. That being said, I've flown anything I could get my hands on...it really sucks to lose such a pioneer in the sport of wingsuiting. It brings to mind the last words of Otto Lilienthal... "sacrifices must be made" Fly Free my brother of the air... BSBD hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  5. There are a number of reasons to head off a space in the ceiling joist of a house. Having been a contractor for over 25 years I have headed off many ceiling joist for owners and subcontractors that were later never used. Among some of the uses would be return air for a/c...convective air vent..skylight...some type of equipment support...support for a light...a smoke alarm...I've even put in blocks like that for swinging chairs in ceilings...use your imagination on that one...many were never used in the final design. As far as the cover...that may for cutting it out from down below with a sawzall without having the insulation falling into the living space. The counter top piece was probably from a sink cutout that we routinely just threw away which had no other use. I actually laughed my ass off at that part of the TV presentation. Don't think it was a hiding place by any means I've seen hundreds of blocks with scrap over them like that over the years...just extra work for nothing. Just from memory...I never saw hinges...I could be wrong...would like to see a picture of the alleged hinges... My guess...Cooper bounced or splashed...I wish he survived after all that but the evidence or lack of it points to dead. Just my .02 hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan

  7. Damn top..how could I forget Crazy Creek? I was instrumental in that DZ start up...also made the first jump there. I've been approached about a boogie there but don't have the energy now days. If it ever happens we would call it the "Once a Century Crazy Creek boogie". [inline crazy_creek_logo.jpg] hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  8. Pope Valley... [inline pv_mug_.jpg] Jump#15 3way round...May 4,1980 jumped @10,500 with the kitchen girls as the formation DC-3 champagne flight climbed to altitude for the 40 way "Sunset over Pope". Landed in the peas on a Para Commander. RIP hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  9. Yep...only one...years ago at my tandem certification course with a fellow who was also getting certified. I was his very first passenger...I could reach all the handles as well. Also the winds were sketchy and I told him I'll be taking over for the landing. He protested and I told him he could learn to land with someone else. Oh ya...we stood it up. hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  10. This is what kind off holes PD says their reserves can have and still be airworthy... http://www.performancedesigns.com/docs/Reserve_manual.pdf hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  11. give this a try... http://highbutdryballoons.com/ Colorado in the summer... Burner has dropped more skydivers out of balloons than anyone on the planet. hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan

  13. I was super current on my Stiletto 135 some years ago and after a 10 year layoff from jumping I jumped the 135 with the feeling of being with an old friend...we still knew each other very well...not sayin I was going to bust a 270 or 180. With a little brake I flew side by side with a PD 190...we were both about 185 lbs. YMMV hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  14. They aren't hard to pack...just like anything...you need to know how to do it. I've packed my Racer reserve with these tools...1. wire bodkin 2. pullup cord 3. pair of tennis shoes. Tool check...yep I got my pullup cord...yep I got the bodkin...hey did I just pack my tennis shoes in my reserve? hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan

  16. I don't see a one-ups-manship here...I see a man on the ultimate edge of the envelope. I just enjoy vicariously...that ultimate edge... hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  17. You to forgot add...you would drown if you jumped in rain...if it wasn't for the pointy end of the rain drops opening up the pores in your skin and forcing more oxygen into your blood stream...if you do drown you'll wake up when your ADD fires up and opens your second chute. hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  18. I do know one thing...if you are unstable when your AAD fires all bets are off. A number of years ago I investigated a fatality for a personal injury attorney. The family wanted to know why the AAD didn't save the jumpers life. The deceased was wearing a camera and new camera suit with wings(2nd or 3rd jump on it) but I insisted on looking at the gear before viewing the jump. The lines had been cut, main lift webs and jump suit so no telling how the gear looked post accident undisturbed. There were major line burns on the back of the arms and legs of the jump suit but no visible burns on the lines or canopy fabric. I did not look at them with magnification. The video shows the jumper going unstable at pull time...most likely sticking his hand through the wing attach strap to grab the PC, realizing what he did and not pulling the PC but then flipping on his back, spinning until the AAD fired. There was a good 3 seconds before impact in which the canopy breathed in and out like it was trying to open but didn't. I took the video home and watched it 20 times in stop motion to finally see the one frame that showed the flip through on the reserve below the slider. I'm 99.99% sure the flip through wasn't a packing error but occurred during the unstable deployment. Would the reserve had ever opened with more altitude...who knows? hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  19. Hey all...this is an old friend of mine...you just might enjoy this tune...Cooper related...maybe? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-03HJY0CHk hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  20. I jumped a Stiletto for about 1500 jumps with camera...I never had a hard opening or an off heading of more than 90 deg. Never had line twists. I jump a 135 currently @ about 200lbs exit weight and of course it's old tech with a short recovery arc. I really don't know why others have had the problems they did. I did barrel rolls with it in 1997 and was told I took my helmet off and spun it until I had air to air video of me performing one on camera. Try one they're fun...just mind your body position on deployment. YMMV... hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  21. I was the first to jump a rig after a friend went in on it. He went in as a no pull do to being knocked unconscious by a low time jumper. It went back to the manufacturer for inspection and repairs. My friend selling it for the family wanted it jumped first before the sale so I jumped it. hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan
  22. +1 on that statement 45...I have the same circumstantial evidence my dad did it. At least I can prove he knew how to jump from planes and he resembles the sketch. I doubt he did it though. I see you're a Mooney fan mrshutter45...I have a friend who is putting a diesel in one with a pressurized cabin to use as a third world mini-freighter.FWIW hangdiver "Mans got to know his limitations" Harry Callahan

  24. The Cooper curse 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Cooper curse, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought– So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Cooper curse, with eyes of flame, Came wiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And hast thou slain the Cooper curse? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!" He chortled in his joy. 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.
