Learning to fly - For what its worth please slow down, there is no rush in this sport. The sky will always be there tommorrow and it would be a real shame for you not to be there to enjoy it. I always have students coming upto me asking me what next skill they should master, my first response is more often than not, "ay, but have you mastered patience yet?". I know how you feel as I have been there with 50 jumps desperatley wanting to push the envelope. You should see me on a snowboard . I have always picked things up more quickly than most people, but like everyone still make mistakes. The most important thing you can learn is that you WILL make mistakes, maybe not tommorrow but you WILL. If and when you do, do you think you will survive? If the answer is your not sure, then you are probably moving to fast. Warwick University Skydiving Club

Cutaway on an FF2 with no top mount - worth it?
efex replied to Newbie's topic in Photography and Video
I have an FF2 and also plan to start shooting stills as soon as I can afford a decent camera. I bought the cutaway system with the helmet because I saw it as £65 which may or may not make the difference of being able to get rid of the helmet in an emergency. Yes snag points are seriously reduced and yes you can used the ratchet release, but on the off chance saving £65 just aint worth it in my opinion. Get the the release and if you every do end up getting a stills camera no need to worry about adding it then. Just my two cents. Warwick University Skydiving Club -
rofl. I take it you mean replaced main canopy with the slider? Warwick University Skydiving Club

i would be interested to know what those reasons are, and having a spinning malfunction isnt one of them. Warwick University Skydiving Club

I know that it is a little off topic (and in noway having a go at anyone atall), but just incase any new jumpers are reading this, there exists absolutly no reason 'not' to use an RSL on any canopy unless it is excessively loaded (it does however remain a personal choice which I happily respect). There is just no point proliferating the myth that they increase risk (which is almost as bad as the 45 degree rule). Sorry I have a bit of a chip about people with little experience who heard RSL 'caused' problems so decided to remove it from their own gear edit to add: this wasnt including jumping things like cameras or additonal snag points where an RSL should be disconnected as standard. I used to have similar problems when I started to learn FS, since I am built quite heavily with broad shoudlers. If I ever went low i was gone becasue I was already at my slowest fall rate. A good jumpsuit and lots of practice later I now have a full range of between around 102-150mph on my belly. Enough to jump with everyone, especially my little warp students. Keep at it dude, you will always find people to jump with and sooner rather than later you will learn those tricks which let you jump with anyone no matter what their fall rate. Tunnel time, letting the coach know you want to work on slow fall definatly helps ;) (I have over 10 hours of tunnel time) edit: cant type to save my l1f3 Warwick University Skydiving Club

Your best bet is to practice the ff-1 dive. I.e exit into a sit, 360's left and right, 360 transition. To stand, 360's in both direction then 360 transition back to sit and start again. Do that as many times as you can. An important point is to do regular alti checks, i.e between each move as if you have been doing alot of bellyflying your internal clock is all wrong. Most improtant think to do with FF'ing is get some good coaching. Money spent on a coach early on will cost far less than it will 40 jumps down the line when you have picked up bad habits. All the best, Fex Warwick University Skydiving Club

Hey Guys, I recently got my warp rating, and im looking for some books or videos which may make it easier to explain some of the slightly more difficult concepts to students (a picture is after all worth a 1000 words). Does anyone know of any teaching material which would be bennifical? Regards, Warwick University Skydiving Club

It can have alot to do with your packing (completly canopy dependant, something that does one thing on one canopy can do the completely opposite on another). I have a pilot and I never pack it too tightly, just a few rolls in the tail is all it needs and it opens sooo softly, its incredible, like falling through butter. Means I can make 10-13 jumps a day and not feel ive just played 3 hours of rugby. Note (so that everyone is aware): NEVER EVER push the nose into the canopy, I know its been perpetuated quite severely, but going on the advice of Alan Hewitt (top BPA rigger examiner, probably one of the guys who knows the most about gear), you are severly increasing your chance of a lineover, by disturbing the packjob. Offical rules are that you must be a B license in order to jump with a full face, due to restricted visibility. I do also however know of certain dropzones where they do 'bend' this rule. Warwick University Skydiving Club

You are actually incorrect there. There are very valid reasons for wearing a weight belt outside of the jump suit. The first one which comes to mind is when jumping near bodies of water. In the off chance you land in water you must be able to jettison the weight asap, otherwise you could potentially drown. If its inside your jumpsuit you first need to take off you rig and then undo your jumpsuit. If you dont have 100% mobility this can become a problem. edit to add: there has recently been a post about the most suitable place to wear a weight belt. Warwick University Skydiving Club

What I would like to know is what restrictions will be placed on foreign jumpers in the UK with 200-400 jumps who do not posses a form of CP1 and want to swoop. Will they have to be signed off for the cp1 qualification first? Warwick University Skydiving Club

Swoop technic - Rear raiser & Toggels use
efex replied to yoavr's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
it would help if you fill out your profile, so that any reply can be tailored to you. i.e you may have 50 jumps in which case you should not be experimenting with rear risers landings (without prior coaching & supervision & condition dependant & type of canopy & a million other things like experience), and you certainly shouldnt have anything to do with swooping. If however you have a few hundred jumps, then you should already know why this is. In short (grosely simplified) when using rear risers on landing you are not killing much speed, so unless you want to run, you can go to toggles to finish of the swoop and slow down. Poll: Total jump numbers and the type of canopy you fly
efex replied to listo's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Ive got just over 250 jumps and I am still flying a semi-elliptical, (pilot 150). I have also started to learn HP landings. You need to add some extra choices up there ;) edit to add: I see your last option there now after re-reading it ;) my bad Warwick University Skydiving Club -
ANY Ideas for my A license graduation JUMP!!!
efex replied to jasonRose's topic in Safety and Training
Drew, I would be interested to know what you think is so inherently dangerous about tube jumps? (We are thinking along the same lines right? - i.e not a freefly tube) In my personal opinion a 2-way tube, providing it is briefed correctly and practiced on the ground, is just as safe as any 2-way linked exit. Maybe not? Warwick University Skydiving Club -

Get them to do a tube exit with you, best way to graduate into the world of skydiving ;) Warwick University Skydiving Club -
The standard OP for any aircraft emergency is to do what you are told by the jump master. If these means do a 10 seconds delay from 10K it means just that. It could well be that you are a long way from DZ and will need that altitude under canopy to make some sort of progress back. I have been at DZ's where if you got out at the wrong point you could be upto 20-30 miles away. Personally if I were involved in a bail out (serious emergency, i.e an engine just fell off) situation (never have been so far) without further instructions I would pile out with everyone else, check the spot, and then start getting seperation immediately. There would normally be jumpers of all sorts of expereinces on board and my main goal would be to go and find my own piece of sky. If the spot required me to open higher then I would make sure I have the seperation to do it first. Just my two cents Warwick University Skydiving Club

What do most of you do? Do you replace your analog with a nepture entirely, or do you attach the neptune to a leg strap as ive seen some people do ?? Warwick University Skydiving Club -
If you get a sonic suit, www.sonicflywear.com it will be done in about 3 weeks. Marc Warwick University Skydiving Club
