Here are some though: Asimov Clarke Bova Pohl Simmons (one of the few authors who has done well cross genre) McDevitt I just finished the second book of The Time Odyssey by Clarke and Baxter.     My guess is that the person who is willing to kidnap and rape a young girl is probably not too concerned about the possible punshments he might face if he kills her too (particularly if he just got out of jail and is, as you say, a "bad ass criminal". He is either going to do it or he isn't. I have a strong feeling that there are very few capable sociopaths who don't commit crimes because they fear the death penalty. Just my opinion though.     Yeah, I know. But the fact of the matter is is that no smoking is slowly becoming more of the norm instead of the oddity. So the permit to allow smoking seems to be a compromise. The key would be to ensure that such abuses (high fees, strict rules, etc) can't occur. So it would require careful wording in the law. And in that case, because of my HIGH faith in the ability of lawmakers to do the correct thing, I hereby rescind my support of a permit. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely in favor of NOT having a smoking ban, but we have to work with what we get. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

    A bar is not a public environment. It is a private establishment. The choice should be in the hands of the owner, not the government. You don't like the fact that someone can smoke in a bar, then go somewhere else. Everyone has been saying it and it really is that simple. Just to recap, if you don't see a "NO SMOKING" sign, don't bitch when someone lights up. You made the choice to subject yourself to it. If the sign says 'DDT SPRAYED BY CUSTOMERS" you may want to reevaluate why the hell you chose to go to such a place. The only argument I find even remotely convincing is the employee angle.     Umm, how many people at NA meetings are addicted to pot? Have you ever been to a meeting and asked them that question? I believe that most NA atendees have other drug problems on top of weed but that is mostly my opinion.     Interesting. I don't really agree, but I like the philosophical implication so let's assume I buy into it. I don't really think it would be a "fear of death" thing for athiest opposition. I would think it would be more of an idea that since this is the ONLY life each of us gets, we should do our best to help its continuation instead of trying to destroy it. I am not an atheist.
