Skydivingmovies.com, time to open the floodgates!
pilotdave replied to pilotdave's topic in The Bonfire
Sorry, I'd offer ftp access but it would about triple or quadruple my monthly charges, plus the extra bandwidth would send me way over my limit. Download speeds are now unrestricted, but bandwidth is at least sort of controlled by having to download files one by one. Dave -
Oh... go to http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=userupload. Fill out the form, then hit add files at the bottom, then after selecting the file you want to upload, hit upload files, and it'll upload. I'll have to approve it once it finishes before it shows up on the site. Bedtime is in 5 mins...hurry up!

Can't get it to upload to skydivingmovies.com? What kind of problem are you having? Dave

Oh, one more thing I forgot. We all owe a lot of thanks to another dz.commer, Lingobaby. He is the one that actually designed the majority of the site. I just edited (and sometimes overwrote -
Skydivingmovies.com, time to open the floodgates!
pilotdave replied to pilotdave's topic in The Bonfire
Alright folks, skydivingmovies.com is ready for some real testing. For now, I'm only going to post the link here. After getting some feedback, I'll open it up to the rest of the world. Here goes nothing... http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2 On the site you'll find: 1200+ skydiving videos available for download 33 categories of videos a file rating system a file comments system 7 languages to choose from (english, spanish, french, german, dutch, norwegian, and portuguese) So, take a look, download some videos, and let me know what you think. edit: instructions for uploading a video... At the top of the page, click upload. When the upload page opens, it loads a java applet. If you don't have java installed, it will ask if you want to install it. Say yes and it'll download java directly from Sun. After it installs, it tells you to restart your computer. Worked fine for me in win xp without restarting though. If java is installed, it'll ask you if you want to accept the security certificate for the site. Say yes. Fill out the form on the upload page, then click the add files button at the bottom. It's important that you fill out the form before the upload actually starts. When you click on add file, it'll let you browse to the file you want to upload. After selecting the file, hit the "upload files" button. You can only upload one file at a time. Although you could open another upload form to add another. Once you get confirmation the upload has completed, it's done. You can go to another page. Happy downloading! Dave -

Jimbo: I understand what you're saying. But just because your rigger has never fucked up before doesn't mean he isn't responsible for his first fuckup. I'm not talking about lawsuits, I'm talking about personal responsibility. I am 100% confident my rigger packed my reserve to the best of his ability, and that he actually has the skill required to pack it correctly. But that doesn't make it my fault when he packs it incorrectly. He can still be blamed. And again, I'm not talking about a regular malfunction. I'm talking about negligent packing. skybytch: I'm just giving you shit. No offense intended. But my point is the same. A mechanic has determined the aircraft, engines, and systems to be airworthy. The pilot preflights the aircraft looking for obvious problems. A casual glance, well, could catch a major problem, but in reality you're trusting the mechanic and pilot to determine the airworthiness of the plane. They hold more responsibility in that determination than you do. You can choose not to get on a plane because it looks unsafe. But looking safe doesn't mean it is safe, and you have no way of making that determination. Again, not talking about suing anyone here. Just saying you are willing to take the RISK by getting into a plane, but you are not responsible for determining if that plane is safe to get into. SkyDekker: I dunno about you but I don't do a background check and drug test before choosing a rigger. I have to trust other peoples' opinions and my own intuition. I've never even asked to see a riggers license. But all the checking in the world doesn't help when the rigger makes one bad decision. And when he does, it's his fault, not mine. I am trusting him to hand me an airworthy reserve system. If he signs it off as being packed correctly when in fact he packed it under the influence, he is responsible because I have no way of determining the packjob was done incorrectly. It is very cute to think you can know your rig is safe and take responsibility for it. I think my rig is safe too. But I'm willing to admit that I don't KNOW that my rig is safe. Now I watched my rigger pack my reserve last time it was done. I know he was sober and packed it carefully. If something goes wrong with it, well, shit happens in this sport. My problem. I accept that. But if I had left it with a rigger who packed it full of dirty socks, well, still my problem but his responsibility. If I survived, he'd be lucky if I sued him instead of taking the law into my own hands. -

You've got the FAA's attitude when it comes to aircraft maintenance. The mechanic is responsible to sign off his work at the time the aircraft leaves the shop. After that, it's the pilot's responsibility to ensure the aircraft is safe to fly, regardless of whether or not it's possible for him to know. So how do you know your rig is safe to jump? If your rigger signs off the repack and then you cut away and find out your reserve wasn't actually connected to your reserve risers, it's then your fault?? You somehow magically should have known? I don't think so. Now I accept the risk that my sober, professional rigger may have packed a malfunction. I do not accept the risk that my rigger may have packed my reserve drunk or high. I guess you must borrow skybytch's x-ray goggles she uses to inspect planes before she gets in to inspect your rig before you jump. Dave -
Not that it necessarily matters, but how often do tandems draw blood? I mean, I know it happens sometimes. Also, should a TM have the right to know if his student has HIV? I mean, I assume that would be covered on the waiver anyway, but is the TM necessarily informed? Dave

Hmm....you jump at cross keys and own a rig. I bet you'll have to slow down to do your 100th on may 6th. Once it warms up a little, they'll be putting up more loads than you know what to do with. You shouldn't have a problem doing 20 jumps in 2 april weekends... if you can be there. Dave

Make sure you READ the waiver!
pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I keep trying to get away but this thread draws me back in! I find it totally unbelievable that anyone is willing to be murdered in this sport and not care. Skydiving is definitely something special and out of the ordinary. I understand the sacrifices people make to participate in the sport. I understand the desire to protect the sport and the people that participate and allow others to participate. But to say that after nearly being murdered, you would simply have to decide whether or not you want to continue jumping just sounds borderline insane to me. No offense, but seriously, that's nuts. Please understand I'm not arguing anything here. You can choose to do what you want. I realize that there are people that are willling to put up with anything. I don't read waivers before signing them. There's nothing in there that would surprise me. Read one, read em all (I used to read them carefully). The fact is, it doesn't matter what the waiver says. If I want to jump, I have to sign. It's as simple as that. So really, your message is don't sue. And under just about any circumstances, I agree. But I don't agree under all circumstances. Dave -

pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ok, you wouldn't sue. Lets say your rigger, who you trust, packs his dirty socks in your container because you forgot to buy him his favorite drink the last time you had a reserve ride. You checked the data card, checked the seal, etc. You go jump, have a mal, cut away, and fall into a swamp, breaking a toe. But since you fell out of the sky, they call in a life flight helicopter to take you to the hospital. They run hundreds of tests and determine all you need is a splint on your toe (do they even do anything for a broken toe?). My question: what do you do? Dave -
Make sure you READ the waiver!
pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nightingale: the waivers I've signed do state gross negligence. They basically say i cant sue under ANY circumstances. Billvon: I'm not a lawyer so maybe I don't have things quite right. But if a DZ commited a crime which hurt me, sure, the DA would be the one taking them to court. But am I not allowed to file a civil suit? If the DZ was found guilty of commiting a crime, do you still think I shouldn't sue? Skybytch: Are you serious?? You think that when my nice new rig arrives from the drop shop, I should unpack it, inspect the reserve myself, and repack it? Or do you think I should use my x-ray vision to read the label? How about aircraft maintenance? A clean plane is a safe plane?? If you think you can tell how safe a plane is by looking at it as you get on, you're seriously kidding yourself. We are NOT the only ones responsible for our own safey. We CANT be. Dave -

Leaving anything to a jury to decide scares me. The Precision case is the perfect example. I think a typical jury would see allowing someone to jump out of a plane as gross negligence. Dave -
Make sure you READ the waiver!
pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Should skydivers be alright with the standard waiver saying that ANYTHING can go wrong? In other words, I've got no problem is the waiver states certain things that I cant sue for. I definitely wont sue for any problems with my own equipment, any problems with their properly maintained equipment, problems with their properly maintained aircraft, etc. But the waiver says if I want to jump there, ANYTHING might happen. There is no guarantee their equipment or aircraft is well maintained. There is no guarantee that their staff has the proper experience to be doing what they're doing. There's no guarantee that the pilot isn't drunk or high. Etc. If they'll make those guarantees to me, I'll guarantee them (for real -

See I think this is a gray area (as if anything isn't). Define faulty equipment. If the reserve has a lineover, was it faulty equipment? If the gear has been properly maintained, but is old and clearly not the best (ie safest) gear available, is it faulty? For example, what if an FXC misfire causes an entaglement. We all know the cypres is better. Were they at fault for giving you inferior equipment? Or do you draw the line at the really bad stuff like when they pack laundry in the reserve compartment but seal it and sign off a repack on the reserve card? Dave -
No such thing as still air under a helicopter!

Would you fly on an airliner if they made you sign the same waiver? Would you sue if you were injured in an accident caused by the airline's gross negligence? Dave -
Make sure you READ the waiver!
pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Waivers won't hold up in court in cases of gross negligence, and they may or may not in other cases. But the question isn't COULD you sue, it's WOULD you. You CAN'T waive your right to sue. So technically no waiver really holds up at all. It just demonstrates that you understood the risks. But I definitely agree that as a customer of a dropzone, I should not be expected to have to put up with gross negligence. The problem is that what one person sees as gross negligence may not be the same as what I see. A jury could think a bad spot is gross negligence. But that's definitely not the kind of thing I'm talking about. So why would I sign the waiver? Cause if I want to jump I have no choice, obviously. I mean I don't want to come across as someone looking to sue a DZ. I'm just saying it's not out of the question if they purposely cause an injury. Dave -
Final touches are in progress, then I'll probably hide a link deep in some thread to get a little testing done before I really announce the grand opening. If you come across a link to the site, or if you helped beta test it a while ago, please PM me and let me know what you think of the latest changes. Dave

I liked the movie. The skydiving (and the rest of the movie) might not be so realistic, but I think it was overall pretty good. Funny thing though... My EXTREME whuffo brother LOVED the skydiving scene. He thinks I'm totally nuts for skydiving and would never try it. But he thought that was just the coolest thing. I mostly liked what they did to their Z1 helmets. They made em look really cool.

That's because the specific answer to your question is totally irrelevant, as you can read in all the responses above. Dave
