Woooohooooo! Go maryland! Dave
-
If you can get me the video, I can put it up. Had to disable user uploads for a little while for some upgrades to the system, but I can still do it. Maybe if phree or souleh will temporarily host the file, I can grab it. Dave
-
Definitely. I'll try to grab a clip from the recent HALO school program that was on TV. Some excellent shots of instructors stabilizing out of control students that are wearing huge rucksacks. Check out this video to see a student go completely unstable during a backloop attempt, and get some help from a very brave instructor. (Also includes a tandem drogue caught on the instructors foot and an insanely fast AFF student spin... again, tackled by the instructor. Very impressive.) Dave

Hey! Don't badmouth TV! TV is people too! Edit: The Commish was a TV show from years ago about a good honest cop. That same actor plays an asshole crooked cop in the shield. Dave
-
Yup, GREAT show. I still call it the commish though! Dave

Skydivingmovies DOT com...???
pilotdave replied to Kate1973's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
9 more gigs, not 9 total, right? That'll last plenty of time. The registration system for uploading will be coming along (we'll just disable uploads for now). And moderation for uploaded files is simple. We used to have that but shut it off for my convenience. Easy to turn back on... I think. Also, downloads are working right now at http://sdm.crocker.com but file sizes won't show up until the dns changes take affect. YAY! -

It's ok... I check dz.com before skydivingmovies.com. -

Why the 45 degree method does not work (long)
pilotdave replied to billvon's topic in Safety and Training
Even more reason NOT to use the 45 degree method. Assuming the camera was angled down at 45 degrees from the aircraft's longitudinal axis, any positive angle of attack would cause the 45 degree line in the video or pictures to actually be greater than 45 degrees down from the horizon. Factoring in angle of attack, the jumpers were even farther from reaching 45 degrees than they appear to in the pictures. Your reasoning for using it would be just like a pilot that never checks the oil before flying because it's never been a problem before. You know it doesn't work, so why teach it? Dave -
Naah. Keep looking. Not worth the effort to buy somethign just to sell it. Might be a different story if it was a PERFECT container for you and you already had a main to go in it, but this sounds like more trouble than its worth. Plus, if a 210 even could fit, it would probably be a very tight fit which is no fun for your first container. Dave

I think the batwing is a pretty high performance canopy. Keep looking! Dave

I think the emphasis on PROPER backloops varies a lot from dropzone to dropzone. I know where I did AFF, the idea was to get unstable and then get stable again. It also generally teaches more body control... sort of like unusual attitude recovery in planes, which all pilots go through. But I've also met people that failed an AFF level because they didn't properly complete the backloop but got upside and and "fell off" to the side. I think that's ridiculous. If they started stable, went upside down, and ended up stable again, that should be good enough. Dave

Tomorrow is going to be the 1st nice day of the season!!!
pilotdave replied to kansasskydiver's topic in The Bonfire
Well, we've had a few nice weekends here so far this year, but tomorrow looks great and my new rig will be ready to jump! YAY! Dave -
I couldn't afford one if it was free. Operating cost is insane. I think my bank account would be emptied by the time the engines reach full power. Dave

Ebay was my suggestion. Turning em into speedboats was my boss's. I'll be moving to a couple of versions of the MH-60S Knighthawk (a naval blackhawk). Picture a blackhawk with missiles and a couple 50 caliber machine guns. Also doing some work on the S-76, a civilian helicopter. I can prolly get you an employee discount if ya want one. Dave

I went with Family Guy. It's a very different kind of humor than the simpsons. Much more geared toward adults. They've crossed SO many lines. Can't wait till they bring it back (anyone heard a date?). I'm guessing 2005 will be the last season for simpsons. A couple years ago, I went to see Nancy Cartwright, who does Bart's voice among others, speak. She mentioned that they were planning to do a simpsons movie, but they didn't have the staff to both write the weekly TV shows and write the movie at the same time, so the movie would have to wait until the tv show went off the air. Well, they're saying the movie will be out in 2006 now. I still love the simpsons but family guy is MUCH funnier. Dave

Ahh...lost all the @skydivingmovies.com addresses with the last hosting fiasco. Dave
-
The one I get most at work: "...and you're a system SAFETY engineer???" "Yep. Survived over 170 times so far. I must know something about safety right?" "Wow. Do you jump with the round chutes or the square ones?" Dave
-
Took ya long enough to ask!

And lose all those socks?! I think not! It took me damn near every pair of socks I own to fill that thing (all clean, too!) Dave
-
One more pic.... packed it with socks to see what it'll look like.

I think I remember when you first posted that. I was SO happy to get to see my color combination, even on another rig. Looks great! Dave
-
The cypres will need to be replaced in a couple years. They only have a 12 year lifespan. But in a couple years you might be ready for a whole new rig anyway. Dave

The website is definitely critical. I designed the maryland site (http://www.umdskydiving.com. We decided to purchase a domain name so the address would be easier to remember. That just makes fliers more effective. To save myself a ton of work, I set up a web-based signup form for first timers to sign up to jump. I also created an access database to store all the information. Saved HOURS of work for each trip (one a month) to the DZ for first timers. Maryland is located about 2 hours from the nearest DZ, so it was really a big trip for the first timers. We'd carpool down, so making sure everyone had a ride was very time consuming. The database really simplified the process. And after all rides were worked out, I could send out an email to everyone on the trip with the list of who is riding with who with only a few clicks of the mouse. The new president doesn't know how easy he has it...
