  1. I disagree - he did about a .5 second delay (so very little burble), and his pitch doesn't look too bad. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."

5’5 and jumping a 293 - your wingloading must be very low. Have you experienced any difficulty under canopy because of that? (such as difficulty making distance over obstacles to get to an LZ, etc?) Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."

I believe there are several factors which contribute to a big wall being an unwise choice for a first jump: 1. Object strike potential - either in freefall or after deployment. 2. Psychological belief that "it's just a low skydive", leading to unpreparedness. 3. Alternatively to the above (or perhaps in conjunction with it): the intimidation factor of such a massive wall. 4. Inability to control body position in dead air is exacerbated, due to expected longer delay (whereas on a span you are limited to a sub-terminal delay). 5. More complex recovery procedures for failure scenarios (slider up line over, etc.) I'm sure there are more, but those are some biggies. 4. I was watching the videos at http://www.stud.ntnu.no/~hansho/ and in each of them, the body position they use while tracking with tracking pants is to have their legs very wide apart, and their arms about where they'd be if they were wearing a wingsuit (with palms up, it looks like). It seems to me that this body position would spill a lot of air and thus be very ineffective, but in the videos they are tracking absolutely unbelievable distances. Can someone explain the aerodynamics of this to me? Why not move your legs close enough together to create a consistent surface (but not too close together to inhibit inflation of the legs), and therefore create a bigger "wing"? (And similarly with bringing your arms into your body). Anyone? Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  5. Someone should step up and do an online database / web site where people could upload accident reports to (anonymously, if they wish). I think that would be invaluable to the field. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."

    Pond flight

Exactly, and it's also the usual cause of the skydiving fatalities where someone cuts away over water - they tend to cut away too high because of misjudging their altitude. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  7. Your proposal is at odds with economic forces, and therefore it would not survive. Firstly, BASE equipment manufacturers benefit from having more people in the sport, therefore they have an economic incentive to create more BASE jumpers through training. There is also the free market principle that if a service is desired, a service provider will come forward to provide that service (c.f. Tom's "tanning man" scenario). This canopy was designed by Stane specifically for certain parameters we needed. It definitely was not a "New Troll Prototype". It was a Hi-lift, lowspeed, low glide ratio piece of art. Nothing like a Troll. hope this helps. take care, space What canopy that is available today is most like the "new Troll prototype"? (i.e. best in situations where you don't need a lot of glide but want to be able to sink very effectively) The Rock Dragon perhaps? Or maybe even a vented (not valved) FOX? Edited to add: What someone should do (Tom?) is create a matrix that has each canopy listed on the vertical axis, and capabilities listed on the horizontal axis. The way capabilities would be measured would probably have to be relative (and subjective - unless the manufacturers will furnish data on glide ratio, and so on), but it would allow the ever growing number of canopies to be easily compared. 9. Several of the FLiK reviews I have read suggest that it is a more "sporty" canopy than the Rock Dragon seems to be, so I don't believe they will perform very similarly. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."

  11. Excellent point, and I think you are correct. Consider the following paper from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: http://www.apa.org/journals/psp/psp7761121.html (It's title is `Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments'). 14. Thanks :-) That was actually precisely my intention. Having certain cells colored would allow you to infer which way the canopy is facing. Having the front third of the bottom skin colored would also work, as you suggest. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  15. Has anyone considered getting a canopy with either cell 1 or 7 a significantly different color than the rest of the canopy? Let's say you've got linetwists and it's at night. Looking up, you could quickly identify which direction your canopy was facing relative to your body orientation. This might be easier than looking at the risers (if they're all twisted up), or from sensing direction of flight (if you have very DBS). (Having different halves of the canopy be different colors would work as well, if not better). Any thoughts? 16. What are the typical set of outcomes for an antenna wire strike? I can envision 3: 1. If your canopy hits the wire, the chances are you could back it off. 2. If your lines hit the wire, i.e. your canopy is trying to fly above the wire and your body is below it, then this would probably be the worst case scenario, because of the likelyhood of canopy collapse. 3. If your body hits the wire, this is somewhat of a combination of both 1 and 2 above. Anyone with experience in wire strikes care to comment? ;-) As far as I know, there has only been one fatality as a result of a wire strike - and that was on a round. - KidWicked Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  17. Will BR be showing the Vertex2 and Prism2? What about the Vertigo Rock Dragon? What other new gear might be there? Anyone in the know, please tell all :-) Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."

  19. Does anyone have a copy of DW's "Aerials in B.A.S.E." article that they can email me? The one on the ABA web site seems damaged (I can't open it in Acrobat on Windows XP or Mac OS X). email: kidwicked@mac.com or PM please! Thanks! 20. To what extent is "nice" pressurization a result of the design of the canopy compared to simply the extent to which it is loaded? Obviously crossporting and bottom skin inlets will have a contributory effect, but how much does airfoil shape factor into the equation? It seems to me that if the brake setting is deep, the airfoil shape probably wouldn't contribute that much. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  21. With BASE canopies, making something flies with a lot of rigidity/performance (X-brace, airlocks, etc) is a bad idea. If the canopy inflates unevenly, the inflated side will start flying fast -- offheading. My ongoing joke about this, "hey, at least it will stay inflated through the object strike." Fast, consistent, symmetrical openings are, IMO, the #1 thing I want out of a BASE canopy. I was thinking more in terms of cross-bracing the center cells to promote more symmetric inflation somehow, rather than the end cells. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  22. Is this for heading performance on opening perhaps? Has any manufacturer every played with cross-bracing certain cells? Any BASE manufacturer perhaps? I'm just thinking out loud here. Coreece: "You sound like some skinheads I know, but your prejudice is with Christians, not niggers..."
  23. Assuming that the venture had to have a commercial element to support the investment, is such a business even vaguely economically viable? i.e. are there enough jumpers (and prospective jumpers) to recoup the investment? 24. I have a rig that hasn't been jumped for the last 6 months and probably won't be jumped for the next year or so. Should I pop the reserve and store it like that, or just store it with it packed up? I'd like to clarify best practice here. Thanks!
