Don't some canopies have colored lines because of a special coating on them to prevent UV damage? I know one of the up jumpers at my DZ has them, I think they're green, or blue. And don't CRW canopies have colored lines? or at least certain lines, like 'A' lines or steering lines or something? PULL!! or DIE!!

I thought this was going to be a Bush 'shoe throwing' thread, lol. I guess if they considered your shoes to be a dangerous weapon, that could be why. These days, they can turn anything into a weapon, ie. shoe bomb etc. That's the only other reason I can think of. PULL!! or DIE!!

I remember one of the first two ways I did for my 'A', I'd been struggling a lot with currency and having a lot of other issues with packing & stuff. We did a linked exit, sort of, but my coach slipped on the climb-out. The rest of the dive went ok at best. But I remember when we landed, he told me how impressed and encouraged he was that I managed to salvage the exit. That was HUGE for me. It had been mediocre dive after mediocre dive, I had to consider whether I wanted to continue. That single comment absolutely sealed it. I knew I could really kick ass if I tried. After that, I really knew it was just as much about how you say it, as what you're saying. Just an opinion from a student's perspective PULL!! or DIE!!

Haha. I thought I'd be a lot geekier than 5. whatever percent, lol. I know if I counted the decimals after the result, I'd be even MORE of a geek. PULL!! or DIE!!

Thanks for all the help you guys :) I've signed up on the IBA site. But I'm doubting that this will be possible. If I've just signed up, but the skills I completed and the time I spent, was done over a year ago. How would any instructor be able to know which skills I've completed already? Or is this sort of a 'from now on' thing? Can my instructors at MTL review video of my first hour, and check off each skill using that?? I'm sure this would be a lot more complicated than just whipping of the basic skills I've already done in the first few minutes, but if I can, why not? PULL!! or DIE!!

Is it a T-10?? Lopo?? Paracommander?? Not that I know how to pack either, but those are the ones I know of. PULL!! or DIE!!

I think a lot of the time too, its because the newbie doesn't know what they're looking for. They might type in a search term for something, and get more than 50 hits on it. I've done it on various topics myself, and sometimes I find it can be like information overload, finding a needle in a haystack. Do you really expect that a newbie skydiver or first jumper would read through all 50 of those threads to get the answer they're looking for? But when someone takes time to answer the question with a well formulated, non-sarcastic reply, the newbie will at least feel somewhat validated. That their questions are important, which I think they are, no matter how many times they've been asked. I don't care who you are, that helps the image of our sport, and skydivers in general. Thanks Alex, I actually e-mailed Mélanie in Montreal, and she sent me that exact same link. So how exactly does the IBA site work? I thought a good portion of that was for aspiring tunnel instructors. I didn't bother to create an account there yet. If I had a list of all the skills required in the progression, and had them witnessed in my first session in the tunnel, could I begin working on the other skills requirements, ones more closely link to the requirements for my actual license? I'm sure I know the answer, but if I had video of a coached session in the NH tunnel, could I have them review it and check me off for those more basic skills I worked on? I'd like to be as prepared as possible before-hand so that I can get the most out of the tunnel that I can. Thanks again!!! PULL!! or DIE!!

Our club has 'group organizer' tips on its website, and the more people you bring, the higher percentage discount the whole group gets. I think we also get referral credit, where we put our name on DZ business cards, and any new jumper who sign up for training and presents the card, gets I think a 10% discount on the FJC. Then the person whose name is on the card gets $12 worth of jump credit. One guy at our club brings BUS-LOADS of university students every summer, and I'd imagine he gets mucho credit. By 'accident is imminent', an example of this would be a loose pilot chute, yes? That seems to me like it could be a serious issue for everyone on the plane, in a worst case scenario. Any other instances there might be, that could create imminent danger for all involved? I still wouldn't jump at anyone's gear, I just think it's good to keep an eye out for this shit. I remember sitting behind another jumper once, and something looked funny about their reserve pin. I don't remember what kind of rig it was, but I think the end of the pin had slipped out of a little pocket on the top of the reserve. I asked another jumper about it, who said it was ok for that jump, but to have her get the rigger to fix the pin after she landed. PULL!! or DIE!!

Well it's good to see that we still look out for each other, at least he was paying attention. But I agree, I think the worst I would do is mention it to the person, and ask to fix it, unless you know the jumper well and are very familiar with their gear. I've gotten various reactions from numerous jumpers, from wearing my left-handed rig. The most common being, 'where the fuck is your pilot chute?' Not that I wouldn't notice someone trying to 'fix' that for me, but either way, at best it would mean a change of underwear after I landed, at worst, a no-pull and a reserve ride. Neither of which, I'd want to deal with. I think if we're gonna do gear checks on the plane, arrange it before-hand, and if something doesn't look right, mention it, and ask first.

No one wants to jump with a newbie :(
skydude2000 replied to katzg08's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Call around to a couple other DZs? It can get a bit hard to learn about flying, by yourself, because you have no visual reference of what you're doing. That's weird though. At my DZ, I'll go up planning on a solo, and get pulled into a 2 or 3 or 4 way with some other up jumpers :) Whenever I decline, thinking I don't wanna be the one to screw up the dive, they tease me about being 'too good to jump with them' lol. And if you're a super cute blonde, I'd jump with you :) and I know you'd have NO trouble finding people to jump with at my DZ, lol. Keep trying, and best of luck!! Skydude. PULL!! or DIE!! -
Buyer Scams: Western Union and Certified "Cheques"
skydude2000 replied to j_ung's topic in Security and Scam Alerts
What if I'm the one sending the check? I wouldn't expect anyone to accept a personal cheque either. So what's best? Asking my DZO to make the transfer, and then hand him a wad of cash or clear up the account with him by direct payment or usual means? How would HE make that transfer, generally, just out of curiosity? PULL!! or DIE!! -
Buyer Scams: Western Union and Certified "Cheques"
skydude2000 replied to j_ung's topic in Security and Scam Alerts
I've heard about the scams through Western Union, but the company I work for accepts certified cheques all the time. What are the other payment options to be considered, if you don't happen to be dealing escrow through a DZ or rigger? Not sure if I should post this type of question here. Feel free to move or delete :) Thanks. PULL!! or DIE!! -
Yup. PST is my home Dropzone. Love it. We've got a C-206, and a Cessna Caravan 208 from May to October next year. $35 CAD to 13,500. C'mon up for a JUMP! :) PULL!! or DIE!!

The other options are the Static Line/IAD program, and I believe some clubs offer a tandem progression. Depending on your skill level and profficiency, the cost would be about the same. I know my club offers a Solo certificate program, which is the pre-requisite for your CSPA 'A', for $1100 CAD. But if you have to repeat jumps, or don't stay current, it can be much more. You'll find arse-loads of threads on here arguing over which is better, but it all comes down to what is best for you. Whatever method you choose, best of luck in your quest, and welcome to the sport!!! Blue ones, Skydude. PULL!! or DIE!!

Is it me, or in a way, should we not be concerned with this? We should all be concerned with keeping the number at ZERO. To the OP, if you're trying to reassure yourself, or convince other people that skydiving is safe, you are wasting your time. I think skydivers have been arguing this with whuffos since skydiving was invented, and nothing has changed. Let's all try to minimize the risks as much as possible, and keep skydiving fun

How many jumps did u have when u did your first wingsuit jump?
skydude2000 replied to mrbiceps's topic in Wing Suit Flying
I had a question about the requirements as well. Is there a specific list of skills you are required or recommended to have before you try a wingsuit? It seems to me that the 200 or 500 jumps would need to be in a RELATED discipline, before they just say 'Oh, 500 jumps?, ok go ahead.' They could be 500 hop & pop's or jumpmaster loads or any number of jumps that have very little skill translation into wing suiting? Am I missing a requirement somewhere? Does it also say they need to be 200 minimum, with at least 100 being tracking dives, or something like that? That would make more sense, to me anyway. I just watched a wicked wingsuit video, but FYI, I won't be even thinking about trying it until I have about a billion more jumps ;) Cheers. PULL!! or DIE!! -
Winter jumping SUCKS. That's why a good number of the Tandem Masters at my DZ bugger off to Florida or wherever as soon as the first snowflakes fall. I've only done a handful of winter jumps, but to me, it's not enjoyable dressing up like the Michelin Marshmallow man, just to say you're hardcore, and jump in the winter. Not to mention, the possibility of locating, feeling and pulling your handles in an emergency. Now, if you're doing a tandem, that wouldn't matter as much, as long as the TM was wearing warm, nimble gloves :) I do admit, it's neat though, landing in a huge pile of the fluffy white stuff. Either way, I know you'll have a BLAST :) Enjoy your tandem, whenever you do it. Cheers. PULL!! or DIE!!

Have I turned into an asshole in the last week?
skydude2000 replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in The Bonfire
Do you automatically answer when someone yells 'Hey, Asshole!!' like everyone else on the DZ? Or is that just me??? ;) PULL!! or DIE!! -
I got charged a $5 deposit for all my training jumps on which I dropped the ripcord. Was quite the change when I switched to BOC, lol. 'Yes!!! I got it!!! Oh shit!! I hafta let go!! Five bucks is a lot of money when you're 18 and trying to save up for jumps ;) PULL!! or DIE!!

I've got a Nuvi 330c, I think. It's really good, except if you make a lot of turns in a short period, it tends to get confused for a minute. PULL!! or DIE!!
