I think someone said it well in another thread...to not offend anyone is to keep your mouth shut, and that's communistic. At the same time, though, looking at an example like Stranger in a Strange Land (great example, by the way), Heinlein tries to demonstrate human perversion (not the sexual kind) and the corruption of innocence. Same thing with Pleasantville...I saw a commercial for it the other day and thought about how it was so wonderful that they introduced color into this black and white world...I wonder if it really made anything better... Just out of curiosity, want to get opinions... We see jokes about different things, ranging anywhere from racial, to sexual, to religious, etc. Is there really such thing as a completely politically correct joke? We really don't know what happened by that e-mail. He may have said jokingly, "awe, quit being a baby." Although it proved to be inappropriate for her, it may have been said in complete innocence. That would be completely different than yelling at her, "QUIT BEING A BABY!!!" Our freedom of speech must be protected. Our freedom of religion must be protected. ----------------------- What is messed up is that it seems that these words apply to the people who believe in God, but nobody else. I agree that it's petty, and that it's a pain in the ass, but the arguement is valid...by the default pledge having the words under god, it is unconstitutional...if the words are omitted, though, it DOES NOT change the pledge to your flag and your country, regardless of where you think it comes from. Omission leaves nobody out...there is nobody that is the outsider, and everyone is free to believe what they want to believe as far as the origins of our nation. The first half of the pledge is what matters, the rest is fluff. Just a thought... I always hear people saying, "if they were your friends, they would understand." They may just plain not understand how important this is to you, and may feel left out because they don't know how important they are to you. If they are still important in your life, then make sure that they know that. Ask them what they would like to do in order to feel close to you, what they would like you to do. There can always be a comprimise between friends...it has to be just that, though, if the friendship is important to you. In other words, it is not all their job to bend to your new found hobby, and their job to understand how you feel...you need to make comprimises if you value them, and try to understand how they feel. In other words, there is no puppet show here unless you call the anchormen and women the puppets and us/GOV the puppet masters. ------------- I guess that is sort of a dumbed down way of saying what I am saying. I think that what we hear is filtered through political agenda, whether it be that of the president, the congress, the media, etc. Politics is not government, and government is not politics...politics is involved in EVERY PART of our lives; It is a self-serving method of acheiving goals and maintaining a social position. The more social one must be, the more political. How does an anchor keep his/her job? By not pissing off the boss - politics. What keeps a boss happy? Ratings - politics. What keeps ratings high? Good interviews, for example. What gets the good interviews with Presidents, Congressmen, etc.? Not pissing them off - politics. Everything we hear will be filtered by someone's personal agenda...an agenda which is helped along more by who they know and who they blow in Washington, than who they cater to down among the people. -S _____________ I'm not conceited...I'm just realistic about my awesomeness...

I don't know if that was meant to counter or support, but as far as I am concerned, that is a great description of exactly what I am talking about. I'm not sitting here shouting conspiracy theory...the fact is that these businesses are just that...businesses. Just because they have the right to free speech and can report everything, doesn't mean that they do it. It goes both ways... Do you really think, I mean do you REALLY think, that the media is not politically influenced? Come on. Why do we only hear about the things in other countries that "matter"? Ironmike posted about 16,000 deaths in India...why didn't we see that in big bold letters??? Why don't we hear more about AIDS and the government in South Africa? They're pretty fucked up, but oh yeah, they don't have oil. Why do we care? If we cared so much about people, why are we only helping ourselves, and not even helping ourselves, at that. Here we are talking about going over to the middle east for the sake of oil, when we could have a functional electric car produced at reasonable prices within months. Think about what we could do with the BILLIONS of dollars that will be spent and have been spent in the name of oil. Why haven't we done it? Cause JoeBlow consumer ain't the one who puts people in office, it's money hungry corporate America. Oh, but we vote...that makes it all better. Don't get me wrong, I love the amenities that we have here in this country, and probably would not choose to live anywhere else for any length of time. well, I don't know ... Frankly on the subject of Iraq I hear a lot of loud discussion from BOTH sides...I don't see anyone having their opinion suppressed , just argued. And that's the way it should be. --------------- Right...you hear arguement from both sides...I'm not saying that the opinions are supressed. What I am saying is that if you look at the polls, approval for an attack has been extremely high until recently. I think that the drop in approval comes from the people waking up. This goes back to the discussion about voting...if someone is not allowed to speak, it is very clear that they are being supressed and controlled. If they are not allowed to make a choice, then it is very clear. You throw voting and free speach into the mix, and people have the impression that they are much more in control than they actually are. You throw in the media and we have the impression that we know what's going on more than the people who live in these 3rd world war-torn countries. We are right, they are wrong, we just need to bring our truth to them and help them to see. You see it in all walks of life, from politics to religion. I'm sorry...I don't buy it. I do think this later type of ritual tends to lend itself all too easily to a "we're gonna kick your ass" type of mentallity and we've all seen enough of that ass kicking... haven't we? ---------------- My thoughts exactly. We remember out of respect...I don't find a Farakhaan (sp?) style "rallying of the troops" assembly to be respectful to anyone.
