Chuck, I spent three years at a DZ that was, by all definitions, a tandem factory. They did student instruction, then put them out to fend for themselves. Experienced jumpers were more than happy to tell you when you did something wrong (Well, you fucked that one up!), but that was the extent of their input. After three years there and 700 jumps, I have received more and better training from you in two posts than at my first DZ. I hope the newbies here know how valuable this info is and take it to heart. When Should The Thought Of Swooping.....

Agree with Phree. Basic straight-in canopy skills can help make a slightly windy day a little easier for anyone to handle. And the best time to learn these skills is not when you need them. Look at Clay. He is swooping on a 190. If he had waited until he downsized, it is doubtful he would get the same benefit at the same risk. INAE, but in my opinion, I would say learn the basics as soon as you are comfortable with the canopy you are jumping. And pick your pace. It's all about pace. From that I conclude that he and his corporation are the most despised person and organization known to those who are experts. And yet, MSFT closed up $1.23 today, ~ 2%.
