There are other possible causes for twisted bridles so you can't really assume the kill line length is to blame. On jumps where I spend a long time flying in brakes my bridle gets really twisted from the added turbulence back there and the slower speed.(causing the pilot chute to hang down lower in the turbulent air) Just another thought. DirtyLowPull.com presents . . .

That's pretty good. Thanks for sharing. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Thanks for posting it Gonzalo and I wish your friend a speedy recovery. I also wonder if worrying less about framing a shot and more about really looking at the equipment might have resulted in a better decision. I remember going through a stage where I thought I would know if there is a problem by the way the canopy "felt". Watching a friend land a lineover without knowing it until it collapsed on flare changed my mind. I always take a moment to actually look at line attachments, etc and do a practice flare while looking at the canopy now. It doesn't take very long really, and I do it after verifying there is no traffic near me and I am heading in the right direction. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Vigil V. Cypres ( Need help as to which one I buy )
icevideot replied to freeflyboy24's topic in Gear and Rigging
That explanation is much better than I expected. I didn't detect any animosity or undue defensiveness in his explanation. That being said I have to agree with bilvon that I would rather have an aad not fire in a condition that I needed it than to have one fire when I don't need or expect it. Fortunately for me, my wife and I have 3 cypress 1's that have 6 or 7 years each on them so I don't have to choose now. If I did it would be a Cypress. I hope many of you will continue to choose the Vigil and Argus so the kinks can be brought to light. That will help me make an informed decision when the time comes. -
That isn't a silly question at all. A lot of students have learned safely with similar wing loadings. I have seen small students land pretty softly without really flaring. It does limit the wind conditions she can jump in however. I avoid putting weights on students whenever possible however because the equipment is already adding a significant percentage of her body weight. In the event of a bad landing or reaching for the ground, her ankles, knees, etc would have to withstand a lot more stress than they are probably accustomed to. I would hate to know I added even more than necessary. If the wind is strong enough to warrant weights it would be smarter to wait for better conditions. That is my reasoning anyway. Opinions vary. Edit to add: Once she has her A license she can wear all the lead she cares to carry but I would still advise some caution. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Does it actually fit in the rig you are putting it in? Don't laugh, it is a fair question. As long as the answer is yes, it shouldn't be too awefully bad to bag. I will admit that I have taken more than one try to bag a new canopy on several occasions so my advice would be to keep at it. I still think it is worth it to have a pristine wing. My old 2500+ jump Stiletto would stay in the bag without closing the locking stows. It also gave somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of a decent flare. If that was all you needed you are set but it was not too tolerant of mistakes. How do you like the pilot so far? "... this ain't a Nerf world."

More pressure is not usually the answer. It shouldn't take long for your technique to catch up with the nice new gear. Enjoy it while it lasts. Of course you can always throw your new one in the washing machine with some Oxy-clean. I wouldn't do it myself but I did know this guy named Sam.... "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Do you promise that PRO packing eliminates off heading openings? I like pro packing because it takes less room on the floor but I can get good openings from either. I have also seen a few guys flat pack faster than I can pro pack and that is pretty quick if it needs to be. I think it is important to find a method you are comfortable with and don't be quick to deviate from it. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I think it should have been left in the order people sign up. That would give credit to the true supporters of the boogie. You alphebetizing freaks remind me of the fish in Finding Nemo flipping out over the bubbles from the treasure chest. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
That's it! You don't have to take that crap from them. You are welcome to come up to Athens, GA and start your dz here. It sucks that they are getting to you but if you show aggravation it is like blood in the shark tank. That has been my observation anyway. Good luck "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I haven't jumped it yet but they seem to be plenty flexible. They seem to prefer to bend in the middle and the grommet will slip right over. I considered making it shorter but it actually isn't that much larger than the grommet so I used his spec. I hadn't seen many different designs and Brian has been using his for a long time so I went with that. I'll keep my eyes open for a style I like better. Anyone else have pictures of a design they like? "... this ain't a Nerf world."

http://riggers.pia.com/tool/post/riggers/vpost?id=1669509 You can try this link. It was a little hard to find. I had to enter the forum and then it is under the Urgent News heading. I hope this helps. There is some other neat stuff on there but navigating took a while to get used to. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I want to add emphasis to his statement. I downsized by a huge step at 100 jumps. The canopy never hurt me even though it came close a couple of times. What saved me was much more along the lines of luck than any skill on my part. I would have learned solid and predictable canopy skills much sooner on a more forgiving wing. Well said Billvon. Cheers, Robin "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Okay, so what do I lose? Bill Booth and Mike Mullins I know but I don't remember a Rickerby. Neat drawing though. I look forward to seeing the color version. The grayscale is pretty busy. -
An audible is a back up but you can't completely rely on it. A visual altimeter is very useful in making informed decisions. If you ever experience a malfunction, it can be worth it's weight in gold. Audibles are secondary but also may save your bacon someday so I use both. If you watch the solid freeflyers, they can fly with their arms all over the place so don't believe anyone who says you can't read an altimeter when freeflying. It is less convenient to look at the ground however so I probably look at my alti a little bit more often than usual. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I just finished my slocks using Brian's design. I am attaching a couple of pictures but I am happy to say they sit nicely under the riser covers of my Voodoo. I can't wait to try them in the air. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Just to be clear this quote comes from another thread but is quoted from the OP. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=2621172;page=1;mh=-1;;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC If the conditions do not allow you to "wait much" for any reason, whether it be clouds or a long spot or anything else, it sounds like you knew you were leaving too soon. You seemed to feel enough need to "keep an eye on the tandem" to not allow adequate horizontal seperation and it sounds like you know this. Then you failed to "keep an eye on the tandem" anyway and saw them next at 4000 feet with an open canopy below you. Sounds like a better plan would be to leave the time you need to and worry less about keeping an eye on them on exit if you can't do it in freefall. If you have doubts about the safety of the situation, don't get out of the plane! A go around is a much better solution and I am sure the tandem master would agree. Good luck to you and all your fellow jumpers.

I am still asking how many seconds you waited. That is all. Below is everything I found that you said about it and I don't see a number. An example would be: "3 seconds" or "8 seconds" or "25 seconds". Is it possible you didn't count? "... this ain't a Nerf world."
-
Now you are the one not answering my questions. I will ask again. How long did you wait? Exactly how many seconds? I am looking forward to your answer. And just to help clear it up for you, all of the experienced people who said they could not tell you how long to wait based on the information given actually were asking those questions. It is convenient to overlook that but you seem intelligent enough to know it anyway. You chose to play innocent and not give the information needed. Now you say you knew all along that winds, speed etc are necessary for an informed decision? "... this ain't a Nerf world."

How long did you wait? Exactly how many seconds? With great effort I am refraining from any cheeky comments at this point. "... this ain't a Nerf world."
