I am always looking for a way to compare wide angle lenses without having to just buy them so I wanted to share this. In the past I have been pretty happy with my Kenko .5 Pro (Mfr# SGW05P). It is wider than any .42 or .43 I have done a direct comparison with and I always thought the resolution was pretty good. After reading how important it is to have a high def lens I finally decided the safest bet would be the Raynox HD3032. Here a 6 test shots I took and posted on facebook. I hope they help someone. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=82456&id=561498163&l=a8ce143e1a "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I think I would have no problem appologizing and refunding the full cost but they wouldn't leave with any of the video or stills either. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I was just wondering if these comparisons were on the same camera? That would eliminate the possibility that the cameras had different focal length. thanks "... this ain't a Nerf world."

0.3 Wide Anlge Lens Option (heard of opteka?)
icevideot replied to beatcreation's topic in Photography and Video
At first glance I agree with you but that is a difficult scene to judge from IMHO. Here is a link to the video on the Raynox site. I had trouble finding it myself. http://raynox.co.jp/actualimage/video/movie/trv950/WMV/hd50503032comp.wmv After capturing stills with screenhunter, I have decided the difference could possibly be enough to satisfy me without going to an outrageous fisheye. I have come to believe these conversion factors (.3x or .5x) are almost completely arbitrary and worthless. My .5 pro from Kenko (SGW05P) is wider by far than their cheap .5 and even wider than any .42 or .43 I have compared it to using the same camera. Of course, it has been around too long to be HD and I have no idea what the results would be on a Res chart. I wish I had access to these 2 from Raynox and the Opteka .3 37mm so I could have a better idea before I spend the coin. I am teetering on the brink of the 3032 but if it proved to be very similar to my Kenko .5 pro that would be sad. I would love to hear more opinions and even better, see captures from the 3032 during a dock maybe, to better judge actual width. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Some would say the peanut prank was too elaborate for a simple joke but I loved it. I may do a variation of this in the future. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Tips on being stable at pull time.... Things to practice?
icevideot replied to rob223's topic in Safety and Training
I read this kind of quickly but it seems you have gotten the right answers. One thing I didn't see is that the left hand should be palm toward the relative wind(toward earth) and not sideways or palm on the helmet or behind the head, etc. You are transtitioning from a mostly square body position to a triangle. The left hand tries to replace some of the drag lost by removing the right arm and a little less leg does the rest. Symmatry is stability. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Thanks for the new Sig line Doug! We should try to think of the forum we are in before posting advice but your response is spot on! "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Are you turning into a winter snob???? Shhh! Don't tell anyone but I think Nadia and I may be. We jumped in Lake Wales Sat and the highs were only in the low 70s! The lows were mid 50s! Brrr! "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Bump, bump. Only one week to go. Time for all the procrastinators to make their final arrangements. Hey Hans, could you order some comfy temperatures to encourage skimpy costumes? "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Anyone used add on mics with Sony's? HC96?

Thanks Spot. I thought you would have the answer. The BT mic is on the way. I'll let you know how it goes. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Anyone used add on mics with Sony's? HC96?
icevideot replied to icevideot's topic in Photography and Video
I have had my HC96 for a while but just recently got a dbox and started using it. I love the camera but the audio, especially in the plane, is unbearable. Oh and yes, I mean even out of the dbox. I am considering either the ECM-HCG1 gun zoom mic @$50 or the ECM-HW1 wireless bluetooth mic for $149.95 both from B&H. I like the camera but the audio is just not cutting it and I have already spent the money on the camera and dbox. I am pretty certain the camera is out of warranty by now as well. I got it because it was on a really good sale. Any experiences you guys have had would be appreciated. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
I think the ti's are spot on with the replies. Now can someone please tell me why the show-boating vidiot was back-flying under the tandem? What if the bridle had failed then? The video shows very clearly the acceleration after the drogue left. I have the skill to get that (admittedly cool) shot. I also have the experience and responsibility not to. I hope you ti's won't put up with endangering your passengers as well as yourselves like that. Cheers, Robin "... this ain't a Nerf world."

replacement chin cup for hawkeye camera helmet?
icevideot replied to Auryn's topic in Gear and Rigging
You may as well use the rachet straps that come with the new cup. You will have them anyway and then you will know the straps and clips were meant to fit together well. Just my .02 "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Have you tried quietly saying"I'm sorry but I think I just pulled your pilot chute (or pin or handle whichever is nearer your foot)" Then when they jump up to check it just get comfy. They will be the ones that seemed to disturb the peace. To all the small girls, if you don't speak up then it is partially your fault. If you do speak up and they don't move tell a few guys who don't mind razzing others (you know who they are) and after enough public humiliation I am sure they will be more considerate. For the most part I agree this is whiny b.s. that people need to get over. Protect your handles and get a pin check if you have any doubt. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

Labor Day at Skydive the Farm ($20.08 jumps)
icevideot replied to micduran's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Boy, that's gonna leave a mark! "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
According to the post this jumper just finished jump 7. I teach students to open if they are not "CIA, Calm, In control, and Aware". I hope you don't think everyone will always open at the pre arranged altitude. That doesn't allow for premature openings or other gear issues. You also have long spots, lost contact lenses or goggles and a host of other potential reasons. We all have to allow proper exit seperation and stay alert. If you feel unsafe and uncomfortable in freefall, I'll understand if you open higher too. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

I agree with you about using all available tools. There is another scenario beyond good day bad day... How about "not really sure"? The card from cypress, the letter from the TSA, and the airline's parachute policy printed out as well as an xray image may be convincing enough. Remember to smile and be patient as well. Its with sad news....Blue Skies Reid Ashe
icevideot replied to woady's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
Any chance of getting the subject line changed to Reid's name and the date? It makes these easier to find. Reid seemed really nice the little time I was around him. Puffy clouds man. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -

I can't stop laughing so I can type Maybe I can come and tell Nadia it's all your fault... No, she is too smart for that. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
That statement is not a fair assumption these days. Not long ago most would argue against RSL's for moderately loaded elipticals but now they are more common. Most of my jumps are video jumps with high performance canopies and I would not have disconnected the RSL. If you don't have time to pull a disconnect tab why would you have time to get stable or clear an entanglement after you just cut away? I think this is worth reconsidering by old school jumpers who believe RSL's are for low timers with docile gear. I used to be one of you because esperienced people I still respect taught me to think that. Now I respectfully believe they are mistaken. Good luck in choosing your own path. I will continue to examine and choose mine. "... this ain't a Nerf world."

My reserve ride July 26, 2008
icevideot replied to yardhippie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hippie I'm glad you are okay. You may want to get checked out though. Especially if you experience any numbness or tingling from anywhere between your shoulders to your fingers. Ice and heat effect nerve dysfunction as well as muscles so that doesn't guarantee anything. Sorry about the camera but how is the Velo? As long as you save yourself new gear can be aquired. Speedy recovery, Robin "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
Labor Day at Skydive the Farm ($20.08 jumps)
icevideot replied to micduran's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I can't believe I am having to type this but we have realized there is a scheduling conflict. The saintly lady who gave birth to my lovely wife has a birthday on Sept 1st. She lives many hours closer to Chester than to the Farm. Now Nadia, being the awesome skydiving wife she is would totally let me go to the Farm without her since I have been looking forward to it so. Right now I am still in the decision phase but I am probably going to have to miss it this year. (No Andy, I don't mean the birthday, I mean the boogie! Nadia is very bummed about it too but it seemed to be an easier decision for her I am still looking forward to my next Farm adventure. "... this ain't a Nerf world." -
