  1. One of the same old issues. How does one secure a gun AND have it readily available for self-protection? A cable lock through the barrel, as suggested in the article, makes a gun unavailable in an emergency. In this particular case it would be interesting to know why no one noticed the child finding the gun and using the gun. Where was the gun located? Was there any reasonable attempt to have the gun in a safe place? Was no one watching the 3-year old? Maybe heads buried in the smart phones?
  2. Best answer yet. Maybe Kallend, Billvon or someone else interpret this. It's from the referenced paper: At Sandia Albuquerque, the "Z-pinch" has produced more than 1 MJ of thermal x-rays, filling a larger Hohlraum than NIF with a black body temperature of more than 200 eV. Such results are obtained by imploding a cylindrical shell of hundreds of fine wires by the self-magnetic field of 20 megamp currents. Interesting results have been obtained not only on radiation flow but also by the use of magnetic pressure to drive flyer plates to produce shocks in materials of relevance to nuclear weapons. In other experiments on the Z machine, the magnetic pressure is used to provide isentropic compression of materials, such as deuterium, to explore their equation of state.
  3. Certainly incorrect, but I was picturing Billy Bob (affectionate Southern slang for a hillbilly, often, correctly or incorrectly, assumed to be less than fully mentally capable) being sent into a containment area with tools. "Send Billy Bob, he only has 8 REMs on his badge this year. Yeah, I know the US standard is 5 REMs but this is Russia, We're tougher."
  4. Interesting - how does one inspect plutonium in a warhead?
  5. Joe - I wasn't assuming who, how or what weapon was used. Just glad that they are being successful in defending the country. Yeah, my term was not good, picked it up in conversations with the military guys without understanding the full context. Hadn't heard of Simo but have now. Not too concerned about how they successfully defend the country just that it gets done. I read that a highly accomplished Canadian sniper was over there. Also read the same thing you stated about the $2,000 a day. There is a young guy from our DZ that went there a couple weeks ago to help. He was initially doing humanitarian aid then was added to a fighter group that has people from various places including locals.
  6. Joe, Bill and Skydeker - I've been off the site for a while Bill - Thanks for posting the article. It clearly states the 3% reduction. That certainly clears that up. Maybe my recollection was incorrect, that the sources were biased, or old-timers disease kicked in. Peace guys.
  7. Joe - I've read that 50 cal sniper guns were delivered. With the mercs going there we may see more tactical attacks. I'm listening to discussions by retired COLs at my local military base that have been there. They say that killing the leaders in the fight is a good thing. It creates confusion. The bigger conversation says that it's the Russian military that will be needed to stop Putin. The logic is the oligarchs will get tired of being financially and personally impacted. They will put pressure on the military leaders to take him out. It seems that those guys have the finances and influence to do anything. No way to know if any of this is true. We'll see.
  8. Joe - just getting back to this. I sincerely don't understand how you reach these conclusions. I believe what I believe because I've read it somewhere from one or more sources that appear credible. In some cases those sources have been shown to not be reliable and I've acknowledged that. I rarely if ever see anyone else acknowledge misstatements. I enjoy an educated exchange and try to have an open mind. In some cases I've altered my view and opinion based on information provided here. On this particular topic of suicide rates it's been stated in many articles from various sources. You stated, "From what I can see suicides in the US were down from 2019 to 2020 by about 3%." You provided no citation or "proof" yet your statement is somehow, magically, expected to be accepted as fact. If what you say is true then back it up. I'll gladly alter my thoughts if provided factual data. On this topic it may be that there is contradicting data from reliable sources. If so, there is no value in us arguing about it. Statements like this are far from reality, they are simply your opinion, and you are wrong. They clearly show that you are set in your opinion and unable to recognize that any other opinion may be accurate, IMO. "But guy's like Bill and airdvr are fully invested in how they see things. No argument, no display of evidence will ever get them to change." One thing for sure, at least for me, is that attacking each other has no purpose. I'd rather discuss the topic and ask honest questions.
  9. Two oligarch owned yachts seized in Italy and one in France. At some point, hopefully, these guys will get tired of their lifestyles being impacted. It's reported that mercs are being offered $2,000 a day to come fight and execute special operations.
  10. Fairly large list of equipment has already arrived and more on the way. Apparently there is an airport in Poland near Urkraine where the large planes are landing and equipment is off loaded for ground transport. There are reports that 60K+ Urkrainian men have returned to fight and people from other countries are traveling there. UK Jan17 & Feb 23 - self-defense weapons and training, more equipment US Feb 26 - $350 million in weapons - Javelin anti-tank weapons, anti-aircraft systems, ammunition, and body armor, and more. Belgium Feb 26 - 2,000 machine guns to the Ukrainian army and 3,800 tons of fuel Netherlands Feb 26 - 50 Panzerfaust 3 anti-tank weapons with 400 missiles, 200 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, helmets, shard vests, and sniper rifles Germany Feb 26 - 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles France Feb 26 - defensive military equipment Czech Republic Feb 26 - 4,000 artillery shells, machine guns, submachine guns, assault rifles, and pistols with ammunition Portugal Feb 26 - vests, night vision goggles, grenades, ammunition, complete portable radios, analog repeaters, and automatic G3 rifles. Canada Feb 27 - $25 million in military aid Greece Feb 27 - 2 C-130's of defense equipment and medical supplies, and 70,000 combat ration packages. Romania Feb 27 - no specific details - ammunition and military equipment Sweden Feb 28 - 5,000 anti-tank weapons, 135,000 field rations, 5,000 helmets, and 5,000 pieces of body armor Italy Feb 28 - Stinger missiles, mortars, and MILAN or Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons, Browning heavy machine guns, MG-type light machine guns, and counter-IED systems. Finland - Feb 28 - 2,500 assault rifles, 150,000 cartridges, 1,500 single-shot anti-tank weapon Spain March 2 - 1,370 anti-tank grenade launchers, 700,000 rifles, and machine-gun rounds and light machine guns. Richard Childress and AMMO Inc have sent 1 million AK-47 rounds, it's in route. Suspect hat more will be sent. They have individuals and corporations offering to donate.
  11. The article said, "The measure limits magazines for rifles that hold 20 or 30 rounds and for a host of pistols that carry more than 10 rounds. It does not prohibit the possession of such magazines." If that's the case it seems the law would be fairly ineffective, at least in that state. And just saw this - Palmetto State Armory Yesterday at 11:32 · With the passing of Washington State's unconstitutional law targeting standard capacity magazines, it is more important than ever for Washington State citizens to stock up on mags. All magazine orders placed from Washington State with Palmetto State Armory with ship out immediately and receive priority over all other orders. Thank you for your understanding and continued business during this time.
  12. If handguns can be imported into Illinois and other sates with restrictive laws it's not a stretch to think that magazine sales will do the same. Seems that the law is rather empty since possession of the device isn't illegal.
  13. The citizens want to fight. ~44 million people (minus those that have left), if only 5% took up arms that would be a formidable force. They could harass the heck out of the ground forces, take out the ground mobile equipment and some of the aircraft. Any deterrent gives Putin a big problem and more time for the sanctions to work. At some point the billionaires may decide to act against Putin.
  14. Agree that US boots on the ground is not a good idea. It seems that if they were supplied with enough stinger missiles to neutralize the air attacks and equipment to eliminate the tanks, transports, etc. that would have a significant impact. The problem is, what would Putin then do. Richard Childress, NASCAR guy, is working to donate 1 million rounds of ammo. The logistics to do that are complex but if the NASCAR crowd gets behind his leadership no telling what could be accomplished. He says he has the production and delivery chain solved, just waiting on a waiver to take it out of the US. https://www.wxii12.com/article/richard-childress-to-send-ammunition-to-ukraine-to-help-during-russian-invasion/39303114# If the reports of Russian soldiers surrendering are true then they are not the army they once were. There are a few guys on Tik Tok providing real time information.
  15. Bill - that whole thing about changing oil every xx miles or once a year. What was/is the reason for the once a year and is it necessary? I'm guessing that doesn't come into play for most fuel car owners but it can come into play for boat owners.
  16. Bill - my point is simple, personal attacks aren't needed or appreciated by anyone. I try to make honest posts and enjoy thoughtful replies. When my opinions differ from others that is all it is, a difference in opinion. Much of your content and knowledge is appreciated. We've had good exchanges on other topics like our solar and energy discussions. Just read your post on nuclear power - spot on, the sooner the better. GA Power is showing us the true cost and timeline. There's plenty of stuff going on and quality exchanges are learning opportunities.
  17. It sure would be interesting to have a listening device in the Situation Room. One has to wonder if there have been discussions about "removing Putin." Are there specific laws that prevent that? In a 2015 article it said, "... officials have criticized the use of the word “assassination” to characterize targeted killings carried out by the United States. The administration’s theory (or part of it, anyway) seems to be that targeted killings can’t be assassinations because assassinations are unlawful killings — and the US’s targeted killings, in the administration’s view, are lawful."
  18. Yep, you are correct, didn't realize that. The last two are false. My mistake. Thanks for the clarification. It appears that the other 3 are accurate and that meets billvons request, "So you don't have any actual examples of her lying. OK then." As to JoeW's concern that some economists agree. Her statement was, “No economist out there is projecting that (the Build Back Better bill) will have a negative impact on inflation.” That is false. The word "No" in this context means none, and that is not correct. " Psaki is wrong to say that no economist foresees inflation as a result of the bill’s passage. Numerous economists, including some who are supportive of the White House’s agenda, have gone on the record saying there probably will be inflationary effects, especially in the near term, if the bill is passed." Come on Joe. You can do way better.
  19. That is an idiotic, false statement with no foundation. SkyDekker said it best, "Nah, I just don't change criticism based on race or gender."
  20. The post was started with IMO. Never claimed anything more than it being an opinion. Nice to see some opposing views and thoughts, the thoughtful ones are appreciated. Always learn something new. On the gas prices. In SC we were at $2.95 3 weeks ago, at $3.60 now with most of that occurring in the last 4 days. Non-ethanol is used in the watercraft and 2-stroke equipment. That product has fairly large price differences. Yesterday it was $3.80, $75 got me 19.472 gallons. That's unusual, it's normal 40-50 cents more than regular. From my perspective, a 65 cent (~20%) increase in cost is substantial. I don't consider that type increase or the potential of larger increases "exaggerated silliness." Let's hope additional large increases don't happen. This is a CNN, "a neon lighted newsfeed", source saying it's gone from $50 to $105, since Joe has been in office, with the worst case being $140 a barrel. It discusses the potential for additional supplies from shale resources and OPEC to enter the market to help control prices, we'll see. https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/23/business/brent-oil-ukraine-russia/index.html Jerry's Post #9 is so true. SkyD, in #10 you left off "HUGE, HUGE." Ridiculous bragging that still echos. Not sure about the maps but the crowds were large. Plenty of truth in #11. #12 has a few unsubstantiated claims. This is one that may be true but it's difficult to believe, "since most illegal immigration happens at legal border crossings." And yes, if the 2.5% figure would have been correct, reducing that would have been better than 0%, and that meets the definition of "assisting." IMO As for Psaki, try these. https://nypost.com/2021/09/02/jen-psaki-keeps-lying-for-joe-biden-on-afghanistan/ https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/psaki-lies-about-desantis-and-vaccines/ Jen Psaki stated on November 15, 2021 in a White House press briefing: “No economist out there is projecting that (the Build Back Better bill) will have a negative impact on inflation.” By Louis Jacobson • November 18, 2021 Says Jen Psaki said in January 2022 that people will start seeing direct deposits in their bank account this weekend and payments to eligible Americans will continue for several weeks. 21. You are right. I exaggerated, should not have said "all." Should have said, "some of the time." And no, I'm not willing to relisten to her. It's been going on for a year. Just like the other side did the same thing. It was meant as a joke. It's crazy that you and I can't hear the truth without it being twisted, stretched and misrepresented. Need to go fill the boat and fuel cans before prices skyrocket.
  22. IMO If Donald had moderated his negative behavior, stopped demeaning folks, and reduced his mean tweets he probably would have been reelected. He just wasn't capable of doing that and people were tired of hearing it, among other things. Rolling back the clock - wonder why Whoopi and all the others didn't leave the country like they promised? Good or bad, if he had been reelected: the border wall would be assisting in managing illegal immigration, Keystone would be underway (at least until the haters found another way to slow it down or stop it), the US would be energy independent (or at least less dependent than we are now, that would be a good thing), we wouldn't have to listen to Jen Psaki lie and misrepresent the truth all the time (we could listen to the other side do the same), and doubt we would have had the social COVID spending that has occurred. It would be interesting to know how other issues would have been handled and what the outcome would have been. CNN was $91, now it's $55. The scandals they've had haven't helped. FOX is at $43 ish from a 5-yr high of $41 ish.
  23. Krispy Kreme for the win. I get mine to go so we can eat them at the DZ, the range, on the water or in the woods.
  24. Is the KRHPS a real thing? One has to wonder if that's one of the many companies that the political figures, anti-gun activists, Hollywood peeps, and others use to protect themselves while whining about guns. About the real part of your comment - Yes, SYG can be a problem. No doubt that permits like a CWP are to easily obtained and retained. No doubt that some gun owners are ill equipped to use the firearms they have. Both can lead to people doing things they aren't qualified to do and getting shot. Absolutely agree on the last sentence. In SC, as of 9-20-21, a CWP holder can open carry. We are the 46th state to adopt that law. Scary. Why? The CWP course requirements in SC are too weak. If one has never touched, read about or even seen a gun they can attend an 8-hour class (that includes range time) and receive a CWP. It can be done with a .22 pistol. I took the course and there were people there that were highly unqualified both before and after. Three people were shooting a .22. Some didn't know how to load or operate the gun, or were careless with muzzle control. The instructors had their hands full. One must score 35 out of 50 shooting 10 rounds each at 3, 5, 7 and 10 yards, and 5 rounds at 12 and 15 yards. It's not difficult. One concern is it could give some folks the feeling that they are now qualified own, use and carry a gun. SC has reciprocity with 20 states, I guess their requirements are as weak as ours. Not good. As you stated, even worse, are those that are looking to be a hero.
  25. The study has a ton of flaws rendering it nothing more that interesting information. The most obvious is the use of the liberal definition of "homicide." The conventional definition is, "the deliberate and unlawful killing..." A SYG self-defense killing is lawful. The liberal definition includes lawful and unlawful killings as homicides. The flawed study doesn't have a control group and doesn't distinguish between lawful and unlawful deaths, and doesn't ID deaths directly related to SYG cases. There is no consideration given to the potential reduction in violent crime since a violent criminal was eliminated, one that probably had already offended and would certainly offend again. There is no consideration given to the fact that homicide rates could have increased the same or a higher percentage without SYG laws. The study, as you've quoted above, states that "SYG laws are associated with....." That may be true except they never made any specific association. They assume that the existence of SYG laws caused the increase. Quick note, one that you will easily grasp, reviewing stats in 41 states doesn't mathematically equate to a "national" increase. Finally, there are these sentences from the Conclusions, "The accumulation of evidence established in this and other studies point to harmful outcomes associated with SYG laws. Despite this, SYG laws have now been enacted in most states, and the uptake of new SYG bills continues to be popular, unnecessarily risking lives." The first sentence says accumulated evidence (meaning homicide statistics), then says "points to harmful outcomes." The second sentence says, "unnecessarily risking lives." The whole study and these "closing arguments" seem to be concerned about the deaths of violent criminals during the commission of a crime. My bet is that the majority of people would prefer that an innocent victim have a legal option to defend themselves from a violent criminal. A quick look down a couple levels on the authors and funding source, and one easily sees the anti-gun bias. Not saying that the data isn't valuable just that the conclusions are flawed. It's more liberal PhD BS. But it does create a beautiful arc as it crosses the room to land in the round file, where it belongs. You are a smart guy. Certainly you can find better data to "prove" what you believe to be true. Or maybe you were sucked in by the Key Points and didn't read the study. To be clear. Any death is not good. But if one chooses to lawfully defend themselves, another person or their property against an aggressor then the outcome is on the aggressor. IMO.
