  3. I did 7 years... I was an NCO so my university wasn't funded, but I did manage to graduate debt-free due to my salary, prizes and scholarships I didn't grow up in a bad situation, but spending an exchange-student year in Sweden when I was 15 gave me the idea that there was a lot "out there" for me to see

    Sad, sad shit

I have an extremely unpopular view of bulliying, which is that it is a natural and unpleasant fact of life. It's not enough to teach kids not to bully - you need to teach kids how to deal with being bullied as well. Because although some people CLEARLY go too far, *some* amount of teasing/ridicule is inescapable. The fact is that some people are vicious (and should be stopped) and some people are too sensitive (and should be helped). Personally, getting severely bullied in school is the best thing that has ever happened to me. Figuring out the right way to stand up for myself was a great life lesson that serves me well to this day. But not everyone is so lucky - some people don't figure it out on their own and they need help. 6. I just got off the phone with my son and he echoed your feelings. He was talking about going to grad school after graduating from college next summer. I said, "or, you could come back home and move in with your Mommy!" He replied, "Mom, that's moving backwards, not forwards." I agree...but I still think he should move home and live with his Mommy. Whenever I have any problem, no matter how teeny or unimportant (like a broken nail!), my mom's solution is for me to move back to Canada... And by "Canada" she means "home to live with Mommy"!!! 11. Just wondering at what age you left your parent's place for good? If you went back several times, please pick other and explain... Same goes for those of you who still live with your folks
  12. Depends on the person... Some people react better if you let things cool down and bring it up later; some people slowly get used to an idea... Some people never change their mind... If the OP pushes her too much to change her mind, chances are it will cause friction in the relationship even if she does "let him" jump. 13. I keep coming back to this thread because something about it bothers me... I don't think this is really about whether or not it's safe to skydive... The real issus is that you and your wife disagree about something... You already came up with a bunch of (pretty lame) excuses that she is not buying, and now you're coming here, hoping people will side with you and tell you she is being unreasonable. This is not a healthy approach to your relationship. I'm not saying you should just do as she says, but if you are prepared to say whatever it takes to "win the argument", it discredits you totally. If it's something you want to do, fine... But don't bring stupid arguments into it like this being a life-lesson for your kids about being brave, facing your fears, et cetera. Jumping out of a plane is a totally useless and avoidable activity - it's just fun. And you want to experience this fun despite it being scary. Fine. There is nothing wrong with that. Just don't try to turn it into something that it's not. Have a little respect for your wife's intelligence and be honest about your motivations for wanting to jump. In any case, it seems the timing is not great... So maybe the best approach is to tell her you see her point and are dropping it for now, on the understanding that this is something you really want and will bring up again at some point in the future. Then drop it. When you bring it up again, she may well understand this is not a passing urge and may be more open to seeing your point of view. 14. That's like 1st seating time in Madrid! Yes, and probably why restaurants close between lunch and supper... "There is no problem so bad you can't make it worse." - Chris Hadfield « Sors le martinet et flagelle toi indigne contrôleuse de gestion. » - my boss
  15. There is a restaurant opposite where I live... There is one waiter and one cook, and about 8 tables... They start preparing around 3 pm and open their doors at 7:30 pm. They serve very fancy cuisine and regularly get calls from people saying they will just be a little bit late (they mean around ten-ish)... They are often shocked and disgusted to be turned away, but for fuck's sake, if they arrive at 10, order for 10:30, finish eating around midnight, the kitchen closes around 2-3 AM and the owners have a 1hr drive to get home... Not to mention many of those vacationing asshats don't realise you can't get a taxi from here at midnight... No... At some point you have to close the kitchen. 16. I love living in an area that caters to all its retirees... You can get practically everything delivered which means that instead of carrying all my heavy groceries up the many steps that lead into my medieval village, I can watch 2 hot, young, sexy/sweaty lads do it for me
  17. Which system are you calling medieval, exactly? I can see advantages to both... 12 is more divisible than 10... Lots of thing still work on this basis - time, for instance (12 hours, 12 months)... But decimals (10) is more intuitive than fractions (12)... You know immediately that 0.25 is greater than 0.23 but most people have to think about 3/4 vs 5/16... 19. I'll be damned... My boyfriend told me his height and I told him there is NO WAY he is that much taller than me because I'm 5'4" and 3/4 (nearly 5'5"). so we measured his height, and he was right, which I STILL could not believe after I converted centimetres to inches via my trusty google converter... So we measured my height and I am in fact just over 5'6" I'm putting shocked emoticons, because I have believed for about 15 years that I am one height, and have now been measured several times (by different people), each time coming in at just over 5'6". How could so many doctors measure my height wrong all these years?????
