Why are you on the list? Derek because he does stuff like land cross pattern after everyone has specified a landing direction. because he is dangerous and doesnt realize that he needs to listen to other people on his dropzone. and guess what at my other dropzone we have bounce bingo too... it has to do with the fact that we are sick of people not listening when they are doing unsafe things, so now after we tell them 20 times, we just put em on the bounce bingo list. muwahahahahaha... Longest recovery arc: Safire1 or safire2?
dharma1976 replied to freeflydemon's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
ARC ARC ARC ARC ARC ARC They never learn do they? But last time I pointed this out they made the excuse they were russian or something I remember that post, I think the guy was a russian living in finland ;) I used to just give a good solid 90 turn to final (toggle turn at 300 ft) under my safire 1 and build up extra speed for a straight in landing with a little turn surf. Also the extra speed definately made it easier to flare :-P I sold it and got myself a PD sabre 2 170 and then 150 and I love it for riser turns... cheers and blues. ahhhhh safety for the invincibles
dharma1976 replied to dharma1976's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
none taken, but if people who have fucked up see others doing the same fuck ups that they did, well lets see, hmmm should we keep our mouths shut, or open it, saying what we did and why and how similar it looks. I got very lucky with my personal leg barometer, it is only a small plate with a pin, my skydiving family member did not gt so lucky. I jsut wish there was more of a way to show people, maybe we should all put our removed metal pieces and or casts and or xrays up at the dropzone to show people how serious it is ;) anywho Cheers blues lets keep the bones and blood inside ;) Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
ahhhhh safety for the invincibles
dharma1976 replied to dharma1976's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
see so am I a young un, but already a bunch of my friends including me...have: a) broken tib fib b) gotten put in a wheelchair for the rest of their life c) broken femur and pelvis d) died e) cracked hip joints f) not listened to the people who have 5000-10000 skydives about maybe trying a different method to learn so that we didnt do the things we did, All of us learned the titanium lesson (or the casket lesson), which is no fun, and some of us cant skydive, so is it better to be reckless and think you are invincible and not listen to the people who are trying to keep you from doing these things and constantly say things like "I got it" or is it better to listen to someone like a coach or whatnot...or are we going to as a sport try to do things like ground people who are flying out of there ability (not saying jump numbers here people, abililty) I myself was doing snappy "pull and pray" turns up to when I hurt myself, then I learned the long carving easy to get out of turn, and my life has been easier to say the least. hope someone gets what I am trying to say here. Cheers lets keep it in our bodies blue skies Skyjunky Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
ahhhhh safety for the invincibles
dharma1976 replied to dharma1976's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
ahhhhh the younguns, ever thinking they are a member of the superhero team the invincibles, unfortunately our evil nemesis the ground is always laying in wait, waiting for us to become comfortable and forget that she is there. so my post is this, what can we do to tell the young ones that maybe what they are doing is not proper in a way that they will hear? What can we do with our friends who tell us no I am allright I dont need to change what I am doing I am a superhero? Is it that all we can do is watch as our friend hooks it every time getting lucky and sit in wait for the medivac when he/she does do it, or can we in someway tell them, show them our own titanium xrays from our own dealings with our old nemesis, the ground. CHeers and blues, Lets keep it inside our bodies folks... What else can I do to learn about flying a canopy?
dharma1976 replied to windcatcher's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
this book saved my life Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
not what mine was ;) nav 260 - 10 jumps nav 220 - 10 jumps sabre 210 - 18 jumps sabre 190 - 2 jumps safire 179 - 200 jumps (measures like a PD 162) pilot 150 - 20 Jumps broken leg (learned lesson about rushing things Read Brian Germaines book while laid up in bed for three months like 5 times) sabre2 170 - 250 jumps (From march to June of this year) Sabre12 150 - 40 jumps And I will stick to my current canopy for at least another 200-300 jumps as of right now, I am working on being really consistant with this canopy and putting it where I want to hanging away from traffic and swooping longer. Cheers and blues... Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

I jump Sabre 2 and have a hard opening in X jumps (on average)
dharma1976 replied to veter_'s topic in Safety and Training
well unless you consider a violent 360 an on heading, I get a few of these every 20 jumps or so. it could be that my one leg is an inch short than the other... cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
Hard Opening Injury 24 July 2005 at Delmarva
dharma1976 replied to Scrumpot's topic in Safety and Training
has any one of these canopies been test for trim, specifically brake trim? I knowi that when my brake lines are shorter the cnaopy opens harder, cant explain why, but I am sure someone can. Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
the only reason it is more per hour for the insured is because they only sometimes get paid form the insurance providers, not because he is getting a deal, hospitals bill people about 200% of what they expect, and then if they sue you in the end only get usually 35% of what they billed. its a whack system, where people are charging for things they didnt do, like the doctore that walked into my ER room and said let me get the Bonesetter, billed me 700 dollars, for something I could have said and did say when I got there. its a fucked up system where we pay more in taxes than say someone in finland and get none of the cool services like free education and health care. cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

Getting into higher performance landings....
dharma1976 replied to ManFallDown's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Tell that to allen at perris, he was just like you, now he has wheels for legs. It all starts because we think we know better than the people who have seen guys lik eus do the exact same thing, insanity is us expecting different results. Getting into higher performance landings....
dharma1976 replied to ManFallDown's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
dude I weighed a 170 sabre 2 out the door at 205 and I got some nice swoops on it, learned how to actually eek out the performance of that, and then downsized after 200 jump son it this season. You might want to try learning on the 170, I did, and I think it might have saved my other fibula. Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
yeah and we were only really going for 300 ;) I think it was kinnys Idea and a lot of begging and pleading went into ggetting people to skip work etc to come help out (kims mom was carrying tandems from the field) but all in all a great day I am glad I went and packed to help out on the record Skijunky Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

learning to pack - starting to fear a cutaway
dharma1976 replied to heidihagen's topic in The Bonfire
learn to pack on tandem canopies, then once you have that down, you can pack anything ;) the trick that helped me the most was the one knee the s fold, one knee on the side to hold it steady. (PS I am also a packer now, with well over 700 packjobs (300 of which were in the last two months and include tandems) http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
well from what I have jumped... sabre, sabre2, crossfire 2, stilletto(Ouch like I thought I broke my back ouch), safire, pilot... I like the crossfire2 :) softest openings to date. Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

not every landing has to be...
dharma1976 replied to dharma1976's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control

not every landing has to be...
dharma1976 replied to dharma1976's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Heres one for the nubes and myself as well so that everyone here doesnt flame me for only having 430 jumps or so... an important lesson in humilty...when not to swoop... when one feels rushed when there is too much traffic when there is an erradic canopy pilot taking up the entire landing area below us any more input guys... I would like a reminder on this, and I am sure there are more that need this lesson than will admit, so I will ask the question... Cheers Skyjunky Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
well you could ask my girlfriend where it has all gone, cuz I seem to be giving it all to her ;) Cheers and Blues Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

What WLing did you start swooping at?
dharma1976 replied to superstu's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
that was the biggest dig I have seen since I ankled in under a 1.33 loaded semi elliptical with 200 jumps ;) after the fact I realized that yes they were right and upsized for another 200 jumps... sometimes humility comes with pain man, and no one seems to want to listen to our experiences whether personal or from seeing it on others, mostly because they are "different", and they are special, and the rules of physics dont apply to them. oh well Skyjunky Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing. -
well I would check either briangermain.com or scottmiller.com for scheuled classes by you or buy brians book, it helped me a lot Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

yeah learn to fly your legs without your arms ;) try doing jumps with no hand flying I like to do a lot of hand signals at my friends when jumping so that helps, but try giving your friend the double middle finger in front of you and holding it... that is a good way to learn it and its a funny picture too ;) Cheers Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

Yeah with the I wish I had done more RW bofore I started freeflying...although i can get there on my belly, I jsut dont have the practice of turnign points or taking different grips but if your going to do it, you are going to do it. I started in a borrowed suit taht wasnt too draggy...then I got some freefly pants and a long sleeve, now I fly either carhartts and a longs sleeve, or a merlin suit (which I love btw) I like the suit for the control surfaces that it gives, but yeah learn to fly your body first... Cheers and blues Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.

totally I agree, but I am trying to say is that he is talking of kicking the knees in is a way to fly slower, does it addstability, no... stability comes from the body position and being relaxed... he was asking if kicking his knees towards each other adds stability, actually it creats a pocket for air to catch on so no it would add instability... but it works to slow down in the moment... Cheers Skyjunky Dave http://www.skyjunky.com CSpenceFLY - I can't believe the number of people willing to bet their life on someone else doing the right thing.
