You mean, they're promising to do what they already promised to do? But they aren't currently doing what they already promised to do, so by definition their promises aren't reliable. I think that was painful for everyone involved. It is hilarious though that they don't realise every accusation or insinuation they make about Strzok's political bias undermines not only their investigation of him, but their years of investigation against Clinton. The idea they're trying to sell is that a career FBI agent who expresses any political opinion cannot participate in an investigation of a political figure, but that elected partisan politicians can carry out reliable, trustworthy investigations of their direct party-political opponents. In this case it's more complicated than that, but through the byzantine insanity that was late 19th to mid 20th century international politics, pieces of paper were that important. WW1 kciked off over a few pieces of paper. Most other nations joined WW2 over pieces of paper. Absolutely. But results don't define intentions. Although winning in europe closed down the concentration camps, it doesn't follow that the US joined the war to stop the holocaust. Although winning in the Pacific halted Japanese atrocities in China and Burma, the US didn't join the war in order to protect Chinese citizens. Do you want to have an ideagasm?

Ron has on several occasions quoted the Romans line "Render unto Caesar" and explained that it means any national laws and any commands from a national ruler supercede the other teachings of Jesus. If the state orders you to kill for whatever reason, you kill, and Jesus approves of it. That's also how he can justify not caring one iota about any fellow member of the human race who was born outside the borders of the USA. It's a quite stunning reversal of the philosophy that should result from believing that all of humanity was created equal by god, and a perfect example of how religion can be manipulated into meaning whatever the believer wants it to mean. Because you can't even admit that our entry into the European theater, which you concede was not due to any threat to American interests, was good. I didn't say that. I said it didn't happen because you thought either Hitler or Hirohito was threatening the idea of humanity. When did everything get so black and white with you? No-one said that. Two problems with that. First is it's a retrospective justification. The human rights abuses of either regime had absolutely nothing to do with the entry of the US into the war. It's like when people tried to support GWB's decision making in the mid 2000's by saying how good it was for the Iraqis to be freed from Saddam and have the US rebuilding their infrastructure - when not only was removing Saddam for the good of the Iraqis never a stated reason for that war, "no nation building" was actually a promise of the administration. Second is it's a very shaky standard to start applying to other scenarios around the world. There are a number of similar genocides and crimes against humanity that went relatively unchallenged, and haven't impacted the idea of humanity in the west at all. Do you want to have an ideagasm?

There are huge numbers of people who make incredible sacrifices for the good of society who aren't in the military, yet you never hear anyone making the demand that everyone else should express vocal admiration for them. No one has to stand up before a sports game while a song is played for aid workers. A few post 9/11 remembrances aside, there are no minute's silences for firefighters. By and large, the military already gets a disproportionately massive amount of praise and recognition compared to any other public service profession. And that's fine, but it's churlish to moan about the people who don't actively contribute to that when there are so many other people out there who don't get anything back at all. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
