  1. I disagree with this. There is no rule book that says mom and dad have to pay for college. I busted my ass in undergrad working 60+ hours a week. I graduated debt free from a private college. Grad school gave me lots of debt, but it's easier to get loans as a grad student than undergrad. There is a big difference between disaster and giving free handouts to a very large number of people that could contribute to their own care but chose not to. I work in health care, so see people on Medicaid/disability that clearly have the resources to help themselves but choose not to try. This is definitely not the case in every situation, but about 30% or so. That's a lot of money that could be better spent. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  3. Where to buy your very own Virgin Mary grilled cheese sandwich maker. Since the first one sold on ebay for $28,000 and this is a one of a kind machine, just think of the fortune that could be made on this! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=19270&item=5545611462&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  5. No, but I would happily take the woman to the store and buy her all the formula she needs, or give the guy a ride wherever he wanted to go, etc. It's not about getting paid back, it is about knowing that the money is actually going where I think it is going. I've never failed to help someone who needs it, but the person who turns down me taking them for dinner or giving them a ride home and just wants the cash probably doesn't need it for what they say they do. 6. Holy shit, you are kidding right? Damn. I'm a doctor and have never bought a car with less than 100K miles on it. I have one now that has 212K miles on it. I just can't afford anything else, but haven't had bad luck with high milage cars so don't mind. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  8. At the time that my husband proposed, he jumped and I didn't. I would have been a little sad if he chose to propose to me based on HIS hobby, not something that we shared as a team. It's my humble opinion that the proposal should really be about both of you, however you choose to do it, not one sided. A tandem does not a skydiver make (of course, neither does my whopping 15 jumps ) That being said, my husband proposed when I was sick as a dog with the flu and high on meds. He essentially drugged me into saying yes. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  9. I agree with you. But my point was just that disagreeing with someone on a political issue does not mean that they are against your religion. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  10. Being called a homophobe or anti-choice has nothing to do with the Bible. They are your beliefs regardless of what they are based on, Biblical or not (and there are plenty of non-religious individuals who feel the same way as you do). So Christianity has nothing to do with it. But I don't think calling you either name is productive. I disagree with the stance on anti-gay unions, but that doesn't mean it's right to call those who disagree with me names. Though I can call you wrong Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  12. With the HIPPA laws that were passed, it is illegal for any medical professional of any type to share any information of any kind with anyone unless having written consent from the patient. So even if there was a way for docs to put people on a 'not allowed to buy guns' list, it would be illegal for them to do so based on privacy acts. The girl would have bumped herself off another way if not with a gun, so it is doubtful that having a gun or not would have prevented her suicide. I wonder if the parents see this as a way to make a buck? Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

  15. I'm curious, do you, as an athiest, explain to your children why you do not celebrate the birth of Christ and do so from a completely neutral perspective allowing your children to make up their own minds as to whether or not there is indeed authenticity to your particular lack of religion, or do you just force it upon them giving them no choice or little choice but to accept the non-existence of a God as fact? Note, I am not Christian, but feel that a Christian parent has just as much right to teach their child in their belief system as any other line of thought. I would teach my children not to be axe murderers, to be kind to others and tolerant of others, etc, because that is my particular moral code and feel that alternatives to that are essentially wrong and not in my childrens' best interests. Christianity is a moral code and belief system in the same respect. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  16. Honestly I think the alleged vendetta against Christians is overblown to non-existent. Yes, some things are stupid, like not allowing 'Merry Christmas' in some settings, but there is nothing offensive about 'happy holidays' since Christmas isn't the only holiday at this time, but Hanukkah as well. But I have not heard anyone singing alternate words to We Wish You a Merry Christmas. I don't know anyone that is offended by being wished a Merry Christmas regardless of their religious beliefs. I do have a problem with people shoving it down my throat that I am not Christian and therefore do not celebrate Christmas, but those people are very few in number so easy to tune out. How would Christians feel if they were wished "happy ramadan" and had ramadan signs all over in every store and had it be a national holiday which was shoved down their throats on every street corner, every song, every picture, every store? How tolerant would they be? To those offended by the icons of Christianity, get over it. To those offended by those of us who do not celebrate the birth of Christ, get over that to. Everyone needs to be more tolerant. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  17. We have separate email accounts, but only for purposes of sorting it. I have one work related account, one personal. He has one personal. I don't care if he reads mine, he doesn't care if I read his. Neither of us has anything to hide from the other. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  18. There has been a holiday at that time of year for hundreds of years before Christ's birth. The Roman Saturnalia holiday, the pagan celebration of the solstice, etc. As someone else posted, Christmas was celebrated when it was to make it easier for the transition to Christianity to be made. It is also why so many Christmas traditions are rooted in the more ancient pagan traditions (the tree, mistletoe, yule logs, etc.) Most of what I have read based on history (death of Herod, etc) and astronomy lean toward a birth of Christ in the spring. Definitely up for debate though
  19. I do have a brief aura before my seizures. Sometimes I have aura without a seizure. Haven't had either in about 6 weeks since upping my Lamictal dose a bit. But that's just me. If you talk to 1000 people with some form of seizure disorder, you will find 1000 different discriptions, each is so different. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  20. I am certainly no looker, but nothing to gag over either. In HS I never had a date, but was this shy little mousy thing that never talked to anyone to begin with. My own damn fault. After grad school, and weighing about 50 lbs more, my confidence was much better, I just carried myself better, was more positive. I never had a problem finding a date then, had far more men interested than I had interest/time for. I've since dropped 90 lbs and see no difference in male attention. For me it isn't really looks or personality, but that first impression formed by demeanor, smile, eye contact, etc. Looks would increase their chances of getting laid, but it's really personality that keeps me intregued. But now that I'm a very happily married camper, it's all irrelavent

  22. Did you know that you can pick up a very fat guinea pig with a shop vac? It makes them squeal and kick their legs around futilely. They aren't stupid enough to check out a shop vac in action after that happening one time. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  23. Mine's a 10++. I commute nearly 2 hours to work. So it is filled to the bottom of the passenger seat with coffee cups, clothes in case I have time to jump or hike, low vision rehab equipment since I do home visits as needed, etc. It's a 1988 Jetta literally held together with bumper stickers. But gets 30 miles to the gallon. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  24. It hurts everyone when people spend a lot of cash on skydiving to the expense of health care. In the end, when someone gets seriously hurt, has no insurance, and racks up thousands in medical bills, the hospital/doc has to write it off and not get re-imbursed at all. As a result, they have to keep fees for everyone high. Insurance companies pay crap, but the hospital signs agreements that say they will accept crap in order to provide care to the general public. For example, my eye exams are about $100. I get $13 for the same exam from Access (PA welfare program). As a result of writing off large amounts of money and so many people who could probably make some form of health insurance work in their budget chosing not to, the cost of health care goes up for everyone. It's a cycle that doesn't end. But realistically, if someone can afford to skydive, they can afford some type of insurance, even if it is very high deductable catastrophic insurance only, it is still some form of back up in case something happens. And not just skydiving. I went from perfectly healthy to having a brain tumor and seizure disorder basically overnight. My meds alone are $500 a month and MRIs about $1500 every 6 months. If I didn't fork out the cash for insurance, I'd be royally screwed. Health problems aren't just from skydiving. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
  25. Flying United, we listened in on air traffic control. As we approached Salt Lake City, they were letting everyone know about the skydivers in the area. We even heard one of our favorite phrases, 'jumpers away'
