I'd say at most UK DZs the answer is still no (except of course for tandem and student rigs), but expect that to change over a period of time. My advice is, pick a DZ from the map I linked to, and contact them directly to see what their requirements are. If you find a DZ that suits you geographically, I'd be happy to PM you my thoughts on that DZ if I've jumped there (don't want to start a fight on here!) - but opinions are obviously subjective. You might also find this link useful - http://www.ukskydiver.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=68 - since DZs have their own forums on there. Should give you a feel for what's going on at each one.

Well, given the wind forecast I was expecting a row of zeroes, and if we hadn't been team training I'd have stayed far from the dz. In fact on the drive over there were reports of bridges being closed and stuff. But miraculously by Saturday afternoon the winds were within limits. We made six skydives altogether, which just goes to show, if you ain't at the dropzone - and pretty much nobody else was - you can't jump whatever happens.

As Tony suggests, it makes a big difference which side of London you are. None are really very close (air traffic being what it is), but I doubt you'd be more than about 50 miles from a DZ. If you're around north or west London, you're really spoiled for choice. This might help (as long as you can identify where London is!) http://www.bpa.org.uk/dropzone/dzone.htm

Just to endorse what Sarah said, make sure you include a graphics tablet. Not cheap, but it's a hundred times better than trying to use the mouse. Wacom are pretty much universally agreed to make the best tablets.

Well, I expect he can afford to buy his round!

Mmmm... quiche. Preferably with jacket potato, cheese and baked beans. But then I am a European.

Why would you go to the side? You only need one hand to hold your racquet, and the other to flick your ash.

I only upgraded from my original Xbox a few months ago, so I'm a pretty late adopter and impressed by any of the new generation of machines. Funny to think how outdated they'll all look in a few years, isn't it? I couldn't imagine forking out for two different systems. I'd like to play the new skydiving game, if only to laugh at it, so I'm wondering whether that will ever get a port to the 360. Guess not, though. This thread needs to get a bit more list-like. I'll do the deed (hopefully without typos) and put myself at the end. Very happy to add dz.commers as friends - better the psychos you know. I mainly play CoD3, because frankly I've sucked at CoD4 so far. But a friendly crowd would definitely tempt me back... Everyone who's posted so far seems to have an Xbox Live account, so I'll stick to that for now: DZ.com - Xbox Live Darius11 - Darius 112 BikerBabe - skydiver8 FreeflyChile - Pisco Sour78 WatchYourStep - Kansas Crew RPC1117 - Zoolander1117 Lindercles - lindercles woodpecker - kidkaz dfairleigh11 - Nothing Safe11 Sheenster303 - BraveJHawk BerryBoy - DrBerry ianmdrennan - v1g1lance Lucky123 - Ron Magicwand MikeJD - CapnMadDog

CoD 4 is incredible, I think. I completed the single-player campaign very quickly, but on an easy setting. Mostly I don't dare go near it online because it seems like a pretty hardcore community and I'm not up to scratch yet. I don't mind too much getting shot every 30 seconds, but there's limited fun in being shot and dissed by trash-talking team-mates! CoD 3 works pretty well for me online, and I'm holding my own fairly well there.

No, but there is a cure of sorts. Buy him Call of Duty 4. Admittedly that's just replacing one addiction with another. Oh, and if you haven't already, don't whatever you do subscribe to Xbox Live. I didn't think I was a gaming addict before I went online.

Unfortunately if you click on that link from the UK you get redirected to the UK website. No cute dogs there, just some ugly vacuum cleaners.

From that altitude? Just aim for the big blue planet. I notice from the Sun article that this skydive is 'the last great challenge left on Earth.' Imagine that. No more great challenges left.

For those wondering just how screwed their hearing is, here's your opportunity to find out: http://www.ultrasonic-ringtones.com Not sure how accurate those pitches are, but I could hear up to 14.1kHz in my left ear and 15.8kHz in my right. By the way, there's an audible click at the beginning and end of each sound file. That doesn't count!

I don't see the need for a hot air balloon. He just needs an AN-2 and plenty of fuel. Should be ok if he takes off a couple of weeks in advance.

I know I have some high-frequency hearing loss in my left ear, so in fact I can hear the noise in my right ear only. Since HF noise is more 'directional' than low frequency noise - i.e. it's easier to tell where it's coming from - I guess for a very high frequency like this one, turning your ear towards the source can make the difference between hearing it and not. Obviously if you're listening on headphones that doesn't apply!

It's in use here in the UK in some areas - apparently there are about 3,500 installations already. The Children's Commissioner (didn't even know we had one until now) says the Mosquito should be banned because it infringes young people's rights. Not sure about that - some teenage gangs are responsible for plenty of infringement themselves - but between this and the incredible amount of CCTV surveillance we have now, I feel more like a lab rat every day. Edited to add: just played the sound file and I can hear it. Pretty unpleasant. Help! I'm being repressed!

You... you mean, they don't do all that stuff for real? Which movie was it? What was your contribution? Tell us more!

I really don't know how dangerous to health 'passive' smoking is. But for me, regardless of any health issues, it's the smell . Here in the UK we went smoke-free last year, and it's still a miracle to me that I can wake up after spending the whole evening in a bar and put on last night's coat without that terrible stink. I'd never try to ban people from smoking altogether. Most of us do things we know are bad for us.

What about this? Actually, I'm not helping, am I?

Aaarggh! My eyes! Yep, those are about as far from being man-tools as it's possible to get.

My local DIY store is selling a new set of power tools. Now, it doesn't actually say Power Tools for Women, but there's a picture of a woman on the box. And the tools are slightly down-scaled. And - no kidding - they are all trimmed in pink. Edited to add a picture of the drill.
