Heard it on the local Dallas news radio station a few months back when I was in town. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

What sort of disaster would it take for WalMart to suddenly go under? Senior management caught hold gladiator games with minority employees? Even then it would retain the redneck business. Kmart still exists - that tells you everything. No way could Walmart fail. And now Sears has the "Sears Grand" stores to compete with Walmart, and they just announced today their smaller, dedicated stores that will go into the spots where they purchased old WalMart and Kmart buildings. The big box store is here to stay. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

During the biz hour news report on the radio they interviewed the author of "China, Inc" Two interesting stats he quoted from the book: 70% of Wal-Mart's commodities are made in China. American companies that have invested in China (McDonalds, Ford, etc) now make more there than from the rest of their global profits. The idea of the book is to draw attention to how China has the economy as it's #1 focus and it will have a direct, and possible overwhelming effect, on the rest of the global economy. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Texas is the most polluted state in the nation....hmmmmm There may be fat there that can be trimmed (esp when it can buy more bombs), but remember how Bush promised in his debates how he was going to help the environment??? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... My $20 FM transmitter is terrible, esp around ANY city. It does ok on the expressway about 10 miles away from big towns. Even then the sound is sub-par (even for mp3). I've decided to find a head unit I like that has front and back inputs. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I used to bitch all the time about my job. It caused an already stressful job to become even worse. Now? I just leave it at work. For instance - the most I said about my bad day yesterday? "Damn, work was fu*kin hellish today, what's for dinner?" Too bad I had to learn the hard way. At least I learned. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

What he said, but don't forget that your battery will drain quick. You will want to get a converter to power your laptop....but the amount you spend on that you could get a nice solid state flash mp3 player. Check out the smaller iRiver flash players. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I enjoyed Angels more than Code. I read the story intro on his other books....and they all seem the same. They are good quick reads, but you can find better authors out there. I was going to read his other books, but decided that there are stronger fictional stories to read (ie Devil in the White City, Life of Pi). What worries me is that everyone will believe his fictional stories as truth. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Brent, did you sell your pictures to that company? If not, then Skyride purchased stolen goods and would need to generate proof of the purchase. Even if they did, they still need to remove the pictures. If you purchased a stolen car you have to give it back once the rightful owner comes back to claim it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Went into work despite being out until 2am from a marathon poker (hold 'em) game. Typical hectic Monday with too much to do and not enough time (working thru lunch at my desk at the moment). Coffee is my friend today. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I have to check tonight when I get home. Some of them may not have tags since I purchased them in bulk at a computer show. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I have an idea for a project at home, but it will require me to identify some memory in a few machines. I can't remember what I have in them as far as speed. There are a few computers that have the ability to take anywhere from 266 to 400mhz and I know I wasn't consistent in what I purchased. Is there a good program that can identify system memory? I think there was a program once call sysmon, but not sure if it will only tell me CAS when I want to know if it is PC3000 or PC3200. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... There was a game last year? I thought it was a soft porn? Super Tit Sunday? The over-correction on that issue is going to be annoying this year. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I remember how big of a deal it was when one of the local BBSes gave access to the web to it's paying members....HUGE uproar. Then AOL came along a couple quick years later and put most of them out of biz. It all comes around in this industry...now AOL is trying to figure out what it's next step is since Dial Up is passe. This summer they are going to relaunch AOL.com to try to compete with Yahoo. Earthlink is entering into the wireless cell phone world (that is a venture that could be interesting - using minutes away from home and using WiFi at home without using minutes) Wow, you could have retired over 15 years ago if you had done that. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... See, that is why I like the school I work for....our .Net instructors are both full time .Net developers with over 10 years application development experience and one of them has a Masters in Education. The same goes for our Java instructor and networking guys (we even employ a CCIE as an instructor - I start taking a CCNA class with him next week). Our Project Management class is taught by a PMP with his CISSP and soon his CISA. It's easier to teach experienced programers a newer language when you have someone that can build that bridge between the book and the real world. (A PMP cert may be in my future) I just found out this week that some of the Colleges in the area STILL teach COBOL and other unneccessary skill sets. It's interesting to see the jobs coming across my desk these days - pretty much split down the middle on Java/EJB and .Net. I don't see as many demands for C, but a lot of them are asking for previous work with C++ and VB (to show experience with OOP). Those RPG programmers? Well, they wanted .Net because the common opinion in the manufacturing world is to slowly transition those AS/400s into a MS environment. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Cause you could do Java for free in a Linux environment? Well, unless you need Websphere or Weblogic then you will need $$$$ (however, if I was new and going into programming I would do .Net since its still new and you can compete against those that have "Sr level" experience with only four years) Large Frame systems never went away. Fortune 1000 companies never got rid of them, they just didn't need four or five people to do the same job anymore...esp after Y2K when all COBOL was debugged, optimized and ready to go for the future (people were making $.25 per line for debug back then). So there was job contraction....thus leading to the glut of unemployed COBOL folks..... But, no joke, COBOL will be making a comeback soon. Why? The current programmers are starting to retire! Mainframes will not expand their footprint in the industry since mid-range is a stronger/cheaper option, but those older machines (which may be running Linux eventually) will still need someone to work them. This was a topic of conversation I had with some technical recruiters this week. So, the moral of the story: Don't let those COBOL skills get too dusty. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I have 9 boxes of "stuff" I can't seem to part with. They haven't been opened since I moved into my place over 4 years ago. I'll have to go thru it soon....looks like I may have to move in the next few months. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Interesting stat for those on the job hunt
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
This came across my desk this morning from a career coach...looks like this is where that stat came from: "Richard Bolles, author of What Color is Your Parachute, the #1 job hunting book in the world for the past 30 years, says that only 4% of job seekers find their jobs through internet job postings and only 7% find their jobs by sending out resumes alone. Yet this is where most job seekers spend the majority of their time. Therefore the best way to get a job is through networking. What type of job do you want? You need to be clear about what you want and then put together a plan to get it. The more specific you are the more targeted and effective you can make you job search campaign and the easier it will be for other people to help you. I didn't say it would be easy. Many people have difficulty identifying their ideal job. They don't want to rule out any possibilities. They claim they can be all things to all people. Or, they feel desperate so they claim they will take anything. The truth is the more clear you are about what you want, the easier it will come to you (and never sound desperate). You will be able to focus all of your energy on achieving it rather than spreading out your efforts, ineffectively. Many people dread the "N" word - Networking. They are fearful about approaching their contacts and expanding their networks, and often it isn't effective for them because they aren't able to clearly articulate the help they need." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
