Moore didn't come up with the numbers for vacation - he was quoting the Washington Post. Did you see the NY Times article about the fact checking associated with this movie? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... When is a President ever on vacation? You think being away from the White House means a President isn't working? You believe when a business person is traveling they are on vacation? More mudslinging BULLSHIT from the left. I think Bill did a good job of debating you on this already, but I will add a point or two. In the movie someone asked GW about all of the vacation time and his response was roughly "I, uh, will, uh, be making a decision or two that, uh, we will be letting you know about, uh, sometime." Yes, in one shot they even show Blair on vacation with him - so they must have been talking policy and just about Aug 6th 2001 he was given the report saying OBL was planning on attacking the US with airplanes while he was on vacation (even show a s supposed picture of him meeting the people delivering the official report) so I am sure he read it and reacted. However, the majority of the White House films show GW playing golf, fishing, cutting down trees and talking about how his dog was chasing wilflife. My company is not allowed to give out commision or a bonus to anyone in my department due to education laws. However, we hold a "meeting" once a year in a really nice place...last year was Cancun and this year will be Hawaii. To make it "official" you have to meet once a day for at least an hour..which is what they do...but it is an all expense paid trip for you and a guest. This is only for the best people in the company and there is no denial that it is a paid vacation. I could argue that I would be making decisions during that time and even be able to write off expenses....but it is still vacation. Also, it wasn't Moore that came up with the 42% vacation time - it was the Washinton Post that originally broke that story. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The SIM's can best answer that question, but in a nutshell, a more comprehensive teaching program. So is the AFP program which the BOD took and changed. I understand they needed to modify it for smaller DZs, but I still prefer AFP. I've certainly seen a decrease in talent of instructors since they changed the course. There are some nice people within the USPA, however there are some that are not willing to let change happen. And there have been some like Roger Nelson, Mike Ortiz, and Mike Mullins that have run for office to make change. Want change? Do something. Personally? I still think leading by example will make the biggest impact in the sport. I have yet to see one jumper actually fear or worry what the USPA would say about their actions. I've never heard anyone say "What would the USPA do?" in any situation. Besides, if the USPA looked for additional power or reach into the community that would cause a huge issue and everyone would bitch more about that organization. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Slanted news media? Did you know that Fox News was the first station to call GW as the winner? Yup. Do you know who approved it? Bush's relative worked for Fox at the time and made the call as producer to call GW the winner that night. Hmmm...biased? After Fox called it, the rest of the news stations back peddled and the whole fiasco began. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Patriot Act/Social Security/DMV problems
ChasingBlueSky replied to Nightingale's topic in Speakers Corner
A democrat in Farenheit 9/11 admitted that no one read it, in fact it was given to them with enough time to read it. The scariest part? He admitted that they really don't read any of the bills in front of them: "Do you realize how long it would take to read all of those? It would slow down legislation, but then again, that may be a good thing." No joke, this comes right from his mouth. Someone explain to me why these dumbasses get 6 figure salaries again? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I've shut up every Bush supporter I have known asking them to debate these facts: 42% of his first 8 months in office were spent on vacation, away from the White House. Yes, he may have had Tony Blair stop by...but you would think that a first time Pres would need more time getting used to the beltway instead of spending the time on the ranch. Seven more minutes of My Pet Goat. You would think the president would want to react to being told our country is under attack...after all, he is the commander in chief. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Yes it has...I'm thinking it was maybe 20 or so years ago - I just know I didn't have my drivers license. Do a little searching. There's a town on (under actually now) the Mississippi river that is now under the river. There was an earthquake on the new madrid fault that caused the mississippi flow north for a couple days and also redirected the river... It turns out it wasn't the Madrid fault they announced on the news tonight - but the Sandwich Faults. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... They announced tonight that it wasn't the Madrid fault, but something called the Sandwich Faults. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Really? Is that what time that was at? I heard something loud at that time, but I just figured it was the train yard (huge noises from there all the time) or Midway airport. I thought the Madrid Fault ran closer to the Mississippi River down near Alton. Ottawa is still nearly a 5 hour drive from Alton. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Well, figuring the strongest one we have had in the area before that wasn't even a 2.0...this is a big deal. I know we have the New Madrid fault in Southern IL, but I didn't think we had one in Central IL. Any earthquake geeks that can help figure out what fault line caused this? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I know that I turned off the TV roughly around 12:50 am and went to bed. So, I slept thru it as well! earthquake.usgs.gov/recenteqsUS/Quakes/uskgad.htm It was pretty funny watching the Shell Oasis on the news this morning talking about it. "It felt like a semi hit the building! Which would make sense since we are a truck stop." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

http://www.themilwaukeechannel.com/news/3467774/detail.html TheMilwaukeeChannel.com 4.5 Magnitude Temblor Hits Midwest POSTED: 7:50 AM EDT June 28, 2004 UPDATED: 8:10 AM EDT June 28, 2004 CHICAGO -- After dealing with a tornado last week, many Wisconsinites were awakened by an earthquake this morning. The earthquake originated in Illinois and hit at 1:11 a.m. It could be felt from Missouri to Wisconsin and Iowa. No injuries were reported. Brian Lassige, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado, said the quake was magnitude 4.5, and its epicenter was about eight miles northwest of Ottawa in northern Illinois, close to the small village of Troy Grove. The rural area is about 70 miles west of Chicago. Initial reports indicated no major damage from the temblor, although police agencies and radio stations within the quake area were inundated with telephone calls. "It was mayhem around here for a while," said Pattie Burke, a dispatcher for the Ottawa Police. "We had more than 200 calls from residents in a short period of time, all of them wanting to know what had happened. A lot of them seemed to think a truck had crashed into their house. The quake was felt at three nuclear power plants in Illinois: Quad Cities, LaSalle and Dresden. Reports of the shaking came from at least as far east as Valparaiso, Ind., and as far west as the Quad Cities, and from Wisconsin in the north to the St. Louis area in the south. Joe Knapp of Delafield, Wis., just west of Milwaukee, said he was asleep and awoke when the bed began shaking. "Everything was just rolling back and forth," Knapp said. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... And what exactly does his size have to do with him, his opinion or politics? Also, how can anyone judge a film they haven't even seen. I saw the movie tonight. I can say that it was a very powerful movie...he does omit stuff out of convienence (ie, never once does he mention that Clark authorized the flights)....but he does go into quite a lot that makes you think. Some of it isn't even his words but actuall segments from a variety of talking heads. Some of the most powerful stuff was the personal side of the war...from some of the brainless idiots in the military (killing people is a the most extreme rush!)to those that are seasoned veterans that have seen far too much war and no longer want it. Also, the journey one mother took as well.... _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

I disagree. Try a stupid move w/ a Sabre 230, then try the exact same stupid move with my old VX-60. Let me know how it turns out. I think you'll find a significant difference. Derek There was a stupid move made with a large Sabre 2 (I've heard from one person it was a 170, in the Incidents forum it was listed as a 190) at Hinkley last weekend that resulted in the jumpers death. He put it into a full stall below the hard deck, and let up only one toggle - it put the canopy into line twists that he did not have enough time to recover from. So yes, a stupid move is a stupid move no matter what the canopy size is. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I can't ping it! Hmm...interesting. I tried turning on my firewall (simple wireless Linksys router/AP). Ok, it's been a while since I played with DNS, other than turning off my router, is there a better way to go about flushing it? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Does anyone have any issues connecting to AIM? I upgraded to the latest 5.5.3595 this week and now I cannot connect (AIM service cannot be reached). I've uninstalled, reinstalled, and even tried installing an old version (4.8) and now that will not connect. I've tried using the Express version and Quick Buddy and those will not connect either!!! Yes, I have the right password and even using case sensetive type. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Nope, I don't know you, and you don't know me either if you think that was grouchy. Also, the post was more of a general response to all of those that are willing to do nothing, sit around and bitch/post about it or just give up. It's good to hear that you do not fall into that category...however, your opening statement of your post made it sound like you were feeling that way. I feel that as many people that there are plenty of people in this sport that give out bad advice. I also feel there are plenty of people that do nothing to make sure another avoidable incident can happen. Both types of people make me wonder what their motivations are. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Higher wingloadings generally yield a faster descent. In a (properly executed) swoop, you're hardly falling at all when you put your feet down. Without one, you're just falling faster when you meet the earth, hence a harder landing. Knees and various parts of the feet generally take the shock and over time start to become very unhappy. I was told by someone that makes canopies for a living that you can land any canopy that is currently on the market straight in. I was told that anyone that claims "I need to hook it to land it" is a poor pilot and probably needs to upsize. I recently watched two very skilled pilots land a Velo 90 and a Crossfire 99 straight in with very soft landings under a high wingloading. I tend to agree with the canopy representative. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Then again, there are those of us that are making a difference...making a change by example. Yes, it is working - and I don't have to give up the sport. Can I save everyone? Nope, and I am not going to try. Can I change what the USPA says and does? Nope, nor do I care. Most of what is accepted in this sport is from popular opinion, not BSR. Let me ask you this, what do you think will work better? Sitting on here making a thousand posts telling newbies what idiots they are, quitting the sport, or working jumper by jumper on making a difference and changing attitudes? I've made my choice, I guess others will make theirs. Yes, there are people that will listen, you just need to talk to them first. I've met the idiots that just won't listen and helped get them grounded and then called several DZs warning them about the jumper. There is always an option - not all will make you popular. If being less popular means I have one less funeral to go to, I could care less who likes me. There are groups out there like Team Funnel that go out of their way to help lower jumpers be safe, and we do it with a smile on our face and have fun while we are doing it. Yes, it works and you don't need to give up the sky. Like Gravity Girl said - never give up, and I won't and neither will those around me. You can sit around and bitch, complain and point fingers and beg someone else to do something about it, but until you actually do something about it yourself, nothing will change. And guess what - it won't happen the first time you try it either. Want to make a difference? Look at the mirror and start there and it will rub off on others. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
