Rating Renewal Seminar requirement for rating renewal
djmarvin replied to geofsmth's topic in Instructors
From the glossary of the SIM 2009-2010 edition pg.221 "RATING RENEWAL SEMINAR, USPA: A meeting of USPA instructional rating holders to exchange information, introduce and discuss new ideas, and to develop, improve, or assure the quality of skydiving instruction." Staff meetings often meet this requirement. At times you may even have an impromptu meeting of Instructors going over technique and policy. This is not new to 2010. edited for spelling DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com -
I bought some tape just like it from Home Depot for a different project, thought I wouldn't have a lot of uses for it after that...guess I was wrong :) DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com

Proof of manufacturers rating, Tandem Proficiency card #10, current FAA 3rd class or higher medical certificate or the equivalent verified and signed by a USPA Tandem Course Director. Fax or mail the proficiency card to USPA with the $50 rating fee. I sent you a PM with the file this came from attached. April 2010 Parachutist, rigid helmets for tandem students
djmarvin replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
Over the few thousand tandems I have done I have only had a student bop me in the head a handful of times. Had I been wearing a hard helmet I doubt it would have hurt much more (not very hard strikes). Add the soft liner outside and it would have probably hurt even less. I think it is definitely an idea worth taking a deeper look at. edited to correct grammer (and still probaby wrong) DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com -
You can also find contact information for any director on USPA's website or in the front of Parachutist. http://www.uspa.org/AboutUSPA/USPABoardofDirectors/tabid/140/Default.aspx DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com

In the past USPA members who have done this have had their membership suspended and not eligible for ratings for awhile after their USPA membership is reinstated. USPA Group Member dropzones have had their group membership suspended for using non rated people on student jumps. edited to strike above statement. It did not happen in the case I was thinking of, however it is possible based on: From The SIM 2009-2010 pg. iii From The SIM 2009-2010 pg. 6 DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com

Oakley Jawbone Prescription Sunglasses
djmarvin replied to Boris73's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have a couple thousand jumps with Oakley Prescription lenses and the weight is not noticable at all. Most Oakley wrap around frames have limit to their prescrition strength. The shape/thickness of the lense changes the arc of the frame. Mine is at strongest prescrition for the frame (not super strong) I have had frames break over time due to stress from the "over sized" lenses in them. Definitely not sometyhing I want to have to replace either, however I am willing to risk it, I use surgical tubing to keep my glasses nice and snug and always wear a helmet on tandems. So far no incident coming even close to losing my glasses this way. DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com -
February where how long in US Training question
djmarvin replied to mousa69's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Does this mean that 'most other' US dropzones teach some AFF levels without using AFF instructors??? Mik, Spaceland uses AFF-Is on all jumps including coach jumps. I believe this is what Cody was refering to. DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com -

Time in the sport brings about a lot of knowledge that would not be otherwise gained. I agree with several posters here. The minimum requirements for ratings should be reconsidered by our board (yes I have and still actively persue this conversation with board members). Several years ago we raised our requirements for licenses. It takes more time/jumps to gain licenses, but to become an instructor the numbers have remained the same for many years. The talent pool grows as well the skill sets, why not mandate more if more is available! Why settle for minimal instructors. (yes I realize there will always people who will aquire a rating with the bare minimums) DJ Marvin AFF I/E, Coach/E, USPA/UPT Tandem I/E http://www.theratingscenter.com
