Studying skydiving / Skydiving culture
pirana replied to saisid's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Quite the contrary; that is exactly what you must do. Go in with no preconceived notions, or at least as few as possible. You certainly do not want the bias or emotional leanings of one, a few, or any small sample of skydivers. You should go and just watch and listen; interacting no more or less than if you were not conducting a study/survey. In fact, at first I would not even let on that you are doing so. Probably be interesting just to note the change in behaviors from how people talk to you as just another student to how they relate to you as someone observing and documenting their behavior with scientific intent. (You are doing science, right?). You'll be famous - like those people that went and lived with chimpanzees and gorillas. That was a huge waste of 33 minutes. Manipulative, deceptive, disjointed - absolutely worthless. I give it a B+ for potential to rile people up (which I'm guessing is the producers intent); but an F overall. I wonder how selective he had to be to get so many clueless responses, or how many 1000's of people he had to ask to get enough of the kind of answer he wanted. Every place is different than every other place - and every place is special. Some people just don't deal well with places different than their own. I call it placism. I say income tax; because below a certain income level there should be very little tax at all, including sales tax. Sales tax also just seems a way to tax money that has already been taxed. If all, or most income, is taxed when it is paid out, and at the proper level, then why do wew need sales tax? As an aside, I'd get rid of most loopholes, credits, deductions, etc. A percentage of income, progressing as income progresses, with minimal exceptions (none - if that's what it takes to sell it as fair) seems the way to go. But getting the corporations and individuals hooked on loopholes off the teat - good luck on that. I do that too (emphasize knees up) and tell them to use their hands behind their knees to make that easy. The bonus is it keeps their hands busy where they can do no harm. One more thing - if having the tandems pull low provides the difference between a reasonable business profit and going broke - there is something else wrong with the operation. If that is the case, and somebody is looking for a Business Process Analyst, I know a guy. I go potty when I need to, and I eat when I need to. Manifest knows I need to eat and gives me no grief for a sandwich break mid day. They also know I need to pee occassionally and I get nothing but a little friendly ribbing if the plane has to wait a moment while I do so. If we are busy and it means getting skipped in the rotation - I'm totally cool with that. Shoulder taps at 6K and drogue release at 5500 - no exceptions. The manufacturer has their rules, the DZ has their's, and I have mine. I truly appreciate that they all mesh nicely - and especially the manifest folks that allow me to eat. May sound trivial - but I want max focus - including no hunger jitters and no squirming about cuz my bladder is about to burst. . . . a narrow-minded, self-serving, hypocrite; who only poses additional danger because enough people of similar ilk just might be able to vote her into the highest office in the land. Her current status is that she is moderately dangerous to her region (MN) and only slightly dangerous at the national level. Her danger level will definitely increase if she is elected POTUS. Very misleading title at the least. "Can religion tell us more than science?" Not sure how anyone can deny that science has told us far more than religion; and the article really does not address the question it asks. Nonetheless - the writer addresses Human Behavior 101 by attaching the science versus religion debate. As topics of discussion (all discussions fall under the category of experiences - even the ones a person has with themself), science and religion are just part of the seemingly infinite labyrinth of inputs that form beliefs. They (science & religion) are significant in that they represent 2 very different ways of accumulating information (more experiences); but the choice of which deserves more credence for each individual is already shaped by previously held beliefs. So again, what a person believes is everything; how it got there is just an identification of cause. Agreed. A good quote: "A person'e life is the perfect manifestitation of what they believe to be true." " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

I disagree with the whole premise. What a person believe's to be true is the absolute bottom line root driver of how we behave. All of our experiences land on us as fuel for forming beliefs (what we believe to be true). Our behavior, largely our interactions with the world around us, is driven by the rules for life we build based on those beliefs. So it goes like this: Experience: Nasty bite from large mean acting dog. Beleif: Large mean acting dogs bite, and it hurts. Rule: Avoid or defend against, large mean acting dogs. Behavior: Crosses street, or pulls weapon, or whatever; when confronted by said dog. Choice depends on a multitude of other inputs from experiences. In my book, the beliefs formulated from our experiences are a critical component of how a person leads their life. The blanket statement that what a person believe's doesn't matter just doesn't wash with me. I'm stealing that line for my FJC: "You can never get altitude back." I'll augment it with my usual lecture about making good decisions while they still have the altitude to do so. Maybe because I'm tall, but I find it very easy to scoop their legs with mine if they can not raise them. I'm good with being their mattress if needed. As far as leaning back, my experience is that they do not need to grab the harness. If they raise their knees, and use their hands behind their knees if necessary, they can get enough leverage just dearching their back. It is essentially a whole body curl instead of just the knees up. Basically I'm asking them to go fetal if necessary. I don't do this as part of the training or brief in the plane - only if they can't show me a good knees up while we are still up high. No need to plant the idea unless it will be needed. I've only done a little over 200 tandems so far, but on the half dozen that could not give me proper legs up this has worked out very well. Anybody have any bad experiences with asking the passenger to basically ball up for landing? (Again, with hands behind knees - not on harness). 3 people under 1 parachute, toddlers in freefall, taking a cat out - WTF? Are the rules there that lax, or do the manufacturers simply have no recourse once somebody owns a tandem rig? Don't know how smart or stupid these people are, but they have certainly demonstrated the capacity to do stupid things. Into social essay/commentary - then anything by Joan Didion. My faves are The White Album, Salvador, and The Year Of Magical Thinking. For the cynical/humorous slant - anything by P.J. O'Rourke. Also, Lost In The Cosmos by Percy, Age Of Missing Information by McKibben. Into science/physics/cosmology - slightly outdated, but still one of my faves - The God Particle by Lederman. Also, Alice In Quantumland by Gilmore, Fear Of Physics by Krauss. I could go on forever, . . . and I will, another time. Somebody (or some people - regardless of race) at Harvard needs to go back to school for some lessons on designing web pages that can be intuitively navigated. I can't in my wildest dreams imagine becoming friends with the trash that constituted the bully population in my schools as a kid. I've run across a few of them as adults. The ones that are still alive (a disproportionate number of them have died early - what a surprise) are still trash and still assholes. I support policies that allow people to defend themselves in the moment, and also give law enforcement the tools needed to take out the trash for the longer term good. I agree that people, including kids, should know how to defend themselves against the assholes of the world. To me that is a separate issue from establishing policies against assault. A person under physical assault has a right to defend themselves, plus the right to see the offender punished. Why do so many people think that assault and stealing are bad behavior and should not go unpunished, but do not want it addressed as such when kids do it? Where do they think the next generation of adult assholes comes from - finishing school? They are grown in the hallways of places that by not addressing it - unofficially condone it. Did you catch the news item when Osama was killed, where some old line Reaganites were claiming some of Reagan's past actions had a hand in bringing him down - when in actuality Reagan funded their very becoming. I don't think it gets any better than believing some masterful being waved a wand and created everything in a single stroke just a few thousand years ago. While I'll concede that people may hold onto neolithic beliefs if they like; pushing to have them added to mandated science standards puts her in the category of DIALs (Dangerously Ignorant Assinine Leaders). The Middle Class Should Be Furious, Another Millionaire Says

Yes, they should be. However, a relatively few loud extremist supporters from both sides of the aisle have duped them into fighting each other over a handful of volatile issues they know will maintain the current polarization. I'm torn between thinking at least the majority of the public is really this stupid and deserves what it gets; or is genuinely being suppressed by an overpowering elite class of dirty players. Well, she made it this far with it being public knowledge that her and her husband think gays need to be, and can be, cured. Hard to believe even a small percentage of citizens think this person should be POTUS. Embarassing for the rest of us. he's taking the piss, but it's liberal baiting. Don't need liberal baiting to see this lady is a narrow-minded extemist. She is a perfect example, and a natural consequence, of our current political state of affairs. "I brought you into the world, and I'll take you out!" Weird thing for people to say, though I've only heard it from people who said there mom said it to them. My mom never said that or anything like it. So really; how many of you were threatened to be killed by your mother? Might explain something about a lot of people's psyches (or it is just another hyperbolic BS line people like to throw out for online effect). So let's take an example. A child born with a horrible disease, lives a short and painful life, dies early - say at age 9. What crime did he commit? Against God or anybody? And how is that at all like you committing murder and complaining about your sentence? Gotta be the worst analogy ever.
