I just returned from visiting Atlantis after she was rolled off the runway. It's a sad day for the U. S. Space Program. A lot of politicians are spouting rhetoric about the hopeful future, but the future of manned spaceflight is so mired down in political red tape, it will be many years before a U. S. government manned spacecraft flies. Luckily, private industry is going for it and will probably do a better job. Kevin Keenan Kennedy Space Ctr. FL

Nice vid, Joe. Good shooting. Too bad the flaming canopy didn't get much footage in the final cut. Got any outtakes/bloopers you can share ? Kevin K. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ?

For what it's worth, the impact energy that moved the SUV so far was partially provided by the MC rider's head and body. I have a feeling that prayer may have been his only workable option at that point. I think that if the impact point had been a couple of feet closer to the front of the SUV, the driver of that vehicle wouldn't have left the scene. Kevin K.

I'm not sure how this ended, but it's not looking good at this point...

If an experienced friend, on a jump with you, landed a reserve off the DZ, would you not follow them for this reason ? Kevin K.

The Space Shuttle Orbiter Discovery, OV-103, is currently undergoing decommissioning at Kennedy Space Center, prior to leaving for the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. This is a user-controlled 360 degree panorama photo of the Flight Deck (it goes up and down also). Enjoy. http://360vr.com/2011/06/22-discovery-flight-deck-opf_6236/index.html

should it require conscious effort to get a stable arch?
kkeenan replied to mixedup's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's a lot like being in the water. At first, you concentrate on breathing and maintaining buoyancy, etc. Later, you can hop in the water and never think about these things, as your body and "muscle memory" naturally do the right things. So, Practice, Practice, Practice. -
Make sure of the wind direction information you are receiving. Recently, at a very large DZ, a group of CRW jumpers was told that the car lights would be pointing a certain way to indicate the wind direction in the landing area. Through some miscommunication, the lights were pointing the opposite way, and all landed downwind. No serious injuries, but there sure could have been. I wish there was one specific way to learn sitfly
kkeenan replied to Cinders's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I wished in one hand and shit in the other. Guess which filled up first ? Noobies complaining that they have bad coaches and can't learn things instantly. Nothing new there... _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ? -
Years ago, I exited near the end of a DC-3 load. As I was in a head-down dive toward the far-away base, I saw something moving between myself and the base. Before I could react, or even realize what it was, a shoe passed me at what looked like the speed of light. It was only after it had passed, that I was even consciously aware that it had been a shoe. That would have been a tough one to take between the eyes. Kevin K. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ?

I think that the correct name for residents of Utah is...Mormon. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ? -
The ISS orbit does decay over time, and it would re-enter fairly quickly if not reboosted occasionally. The Russian segment of ISS has thrusters that can provide this reboost. There are also several different supply vehicles that bring cargo to ISS. Some of these can use their propulsion systems to boost the orbit. The final decommissioning plan for ISS is to remotely command a deceleration burn from a supply craft engine, which would slow it enough to start re-entry. This will be targeted for a large uninhabited area of the South Pacific, such as was used for the Russian Mir space station. This is currently planned for at least 10 years from now, but who's to say. Mir was planned for a 5-year lifetime, but stayed in service for 15 years. Here's a nice photo looking into the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) for STS-135. This module holds about 20,000 lbs. of supplies, and looks like a very big beer can. It is removed from the Shuttle's Payload Bay, and docked onto one of the hatches of the Space Station, where it is unloaded. This is the final closeout photo. All cargo has been loaded, and, following hatch closure, the MPLM will be headed to the pad next week to be loaded onto Atlantis for her final trip. When I say "nice", I mean that it's a great photo, and it's good that the loading is done. It's not nice that there will probably never be a spacecraft in my lifetime that will provide the capabilities to our space program that the Shuttle has provided. Oh well, nice while it lasted... New Operator at Lake Wales, FL ?
kkeenan replied to kkeenan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I miss jumping at Lk. Wales. It is a great airport, and my feeling is that any change in DZ operators could only be a good thing for the fun-jumping community. In my opinion, a tandem-only operation does not benefit the skydiving community at all. Many fine folks left Lk. Wales when the current operator took over. Hopefully the new guy can make a go of it and everyone can come back for more great jumps. Kevin K. _____________________________________ Dude, you are so awesome... Can I be on your ash jump ? -
