Was this an issue at all?
-
Yeah, I was actually going to ask that on another thread. Is there any sort of "rule of thumb" w/regard to canopy size, wingloading, and exit weight? ie - if my exit weight/wingload is 300/1.15, and my wife has an exit weight of around say 165, what wingloading would be roughly equivalent? Any idea?
-
I have 13 jumps now. I weigh about 265, I've been jumping a Navigator 260 since my first jump, so my loading is somewhere around 1.15, give or take. I've done fine with it, but I've also been aware that I'm loaded higher than most students, and I've PLFed most of my landings, just because it's taken me perhaps a bit longer to find the exact timing for landing since I'm coming in faster. It probably helps a lot that it's a Navigator, which according to PD is very very forgiving. I've tried to stall it up high and simply can't - with the toggles all the way down, it just flutters a bit on the back edge but stays right in place. Landing my 13th...

Depends on the goggles. I was told by SportRX that they would glue the lenses in if they were to be used for skydiving, since they might pop out under the wind pressure. *shrug* On the other hand, the WileyX goggles I'm using now have removable lenses, so that would work exactly as you mention. So far they haven't fallen out. Yet.
-
I should mention that SportRX's customer service was also really great for me as well. The goggles are pretty good quality as well, just didn't fit me right personally.
-
I called SportRX and they sent me out four different styles of goggles to try on, the G103, 104, 107, and 108. I didn't really like the fit of any of them, although my wife liked the G107 and kept those. I ended up buying a pair of WileyX XL-1 goggle/sunglasses, they have a removable lens, I had my local optomatrist make me a set of lenses for them, the frames were $80 and the lenses cost me $120. They fit and work really well.
-
What equipment did you jump on? And congrats. :)
-
Any reason why? People just want to get away from anything that's not ZP as quickly as possible, perhaps?
-
What's your opinion on PD's Silhouette? I talked to them and they recommended that canopy as a good first main.
-
I only have 10 jumps so take anything I say with that in mind.
-
Thanks all :) We both appreciate it. :)

Both my wife and myself graduated from our respective training courses (ASP for her, AFF for me) on Saturday. We now know enough to be dangerous. We owe beer. :)
-
The jumpmaster I'm working with told me that Skydive Arizona over in Eloy uses 370 mains for all their students. Worth calling to check, perhaps.
-
Yeah, my wife is cool.
-
Fair enough. I will order a clear pair for now, and mabye a dark pair later on. Thanks for all the input.
-
Yeah, I know. Just because the universe says it has to be that way doesn't mean I have to like it.
-
my preference would actually be probably to go clear polarized. That doesn't seem to be an option tho.
-
I am going to be buying a set of prescription goggles from SportRX soon (they are sending me four different types to try on, very nice of them :)) and I'm trying to decide what color/how dark to get them made. The biggest issue I have is sun glare, it bothers me quite a bit. My preference really would be to get a light tint with polarized lenses, but they don't offer polarization except with a gray-3 tint which is fairly dark. So, which way should I go? The colors they offer are gray, amber, brown, and vermillion, any of these going to do a better job reducing glare for me than another?

I believe it's a Javelin, but i'm not 100% sure on that. The container isn't specified in my logbook.
-
Any idea whether those numbers are at sea level, or what? I know that ground altitude and temperature would have some effect.
-
Coolidge, which is at I think about 1000 ft above sea level, roughly. That would make a difference, I'd guess... The landings don't seem too rough, at least I haven't come down hard yet, but I've only done two jumps. Second one was a little harder than the first, but that was primarily due to the fact that I couldn't hear my chest-strap radio (bad ears, going to get an ear bud before the next one) and I landed at 90 degrees to the wind, started my "final" about 200 feet too low, couldn't get that last turn to head into the wind (and really didn't want to try, from what I've been reading low altitude turns are where people get hurt the most, seems like.)
-
Thanks :) Hopefully I'll get my wife in here soon. :) Turns out the canopy I used was a Nav 260, not a 280. Did my AFF II jump yesterday. :)

HI, new here! LOVE IT, except got choked on lvl 3 jump!
bsoder replied to saltlakedrop's topic in Introductions and Greets
I've done my level 1 and 2 AFF jumps (level 2 was yesterday) and I was on the same canopy you were, Nav 260. On my first jump I had the same problem with the chest strap coming right up against my chin. It was somewhat better on the second jump, I tightened the legstraps quite a bit more, basically to the just slightly uncomfortable point, that seemed to work. When I get my own equipment I am definitely getting the wider leg straps, those 3" straps are brusing me pretty good (I'm also a big guy, ~ 270 lbs, so that doesn't help.) I'm glad I skipped the tandems, this is way too much fun :) -
I'm in Phoenix, so the altitude is fairly low. I'm a pretty big guy, about 270 w/o gear, so I'm guestimating my exit weight at mabye 310 or so? 315? somewhere around there anyway. The parachute I used for my first jump was a Navigator 280, so I guess my loading would be somewhere around 1.1:1. Happen to know what size a Manta 2-H canopy would be? My wife's AFF jumps have been on that particular parachute, but she's a LOT smaller than I am.
-
I did my AFF I jump on Sunday, can't wait to go again. :) My wife got me into this, she is a couple jumps ahead of me, so I have to catch up. :) Question - what is a good wing loading ratio range for someone just starting out, typically?
