  1. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/102610dntexcampuscarry.2ad0e83.html Looks like the TX concealed carry on campus bill might make it to the floor this session. Let's eliminate a bunch of unarmed victim zones. -- Rob
  2. Kids don't take or schools don't offer? Even at when it was offered, when I went to school more than 30 years ago, it simply wasn't something boys took -- ever. We had to take a 2 week mini course in home-ec while the girls learned how to solder sheet metal. We made pizza, sewed buttons onto cardboard, and a bunch of other stuff I've forgotten. fixing buttons is a useful skill. Have done that more than once on the road before a business meeting. -- Rob
  3. you didn't read too closely. I didn't say buy pre-made pasta sauce. I said buy a can of tomato sauce. Don't be lazy. Hell, the name brand at my store are 3/$1. A Head of lettuce is about a dollar, lean beef is $3/lb pre-ground. 1lb box of name-brand pasta is $1.29, an onion is about $0.40, for $6 I can feed 3-4 people. You're listing Texas prices, not Bay Area ones. I said "here" the prices are X. It's also much easier to inexpensively feed 4 than 1 on a per person basis. for good food , Yes...much cheaper for one, to eat out...and a hell of a lot easier! for a family, of 3 or more, time to go shopping! use zip-loc bags. cook once, eat 3-4 times. sometimes it's OK to be lazy :) -- Rob
  4. Kids don't take or schools don't offer? Even at when it was offered, when I went to school more than 30 years ago, it simply wasn't something boys took -- ever. ya know... I don't know if it's not offered anymore. When I was in Jr high 25-ish years ago, I had my choice between shop & home-ec. My dad had taught me woodworking for several years (we built much of the furniture we had in the house) so I opted to go to class with the girls and eat, and then sew the next semester. I got a few good dates out of it, so there were some other boys that switched over for sewing semester. -- Rob

You're listing Texas prices, not Bay Area ones. I said "here" the prices are X. It's also much easier to inexpensively feed 4 than 1 on a per person basis. you're still listing prices for a jar of pasta sauce, not the can of tomato sauce. You're not seriously telling me that a 6oz can of tomato sauce costs $2.50? Don't be lazy and buy the prepared stuff. I've shopped in the Bay area. I could feed a family of 4 (cook 4 portions that would keep for a week) there for about $8. It's also easier to cook for 4 and save 3 portions for leftovers. (thus cooking 3 or 4 times a week if you're single) But don't let me stop you.... clearly I'm wrong, and you're right. are you sure you're not my wife? :) -- Rob
  6. as cheaply as McDonald's? Probably not. Here that meal would be $1 for the pasta on sale, $2 or $2.50 for the sauce on sale, and ~$2 for the sausage. Then $2 for the greens. It's also one of the cheapest meals you can do - and not so great 14 times a week. Chef Boy R Dee is the really cheap version of it, too. you didn't read too closely. I didn't say buy pre-made pasta sauce. I said buy a can of tomato sauce. Don't be lazy. Hell, the name brand at my store are 3/$1. A Head of lettuce is about a dollar, lean beef is $3/lb pre-ground. 1lb box of name-brand pasta is $1.29, an onion is about $0.40, for $6 I can feed 3-4 people. and chef boy r dee is the really bad for you version too. you can eat well (healthy, not 5-star) for a few dollars per meal IF YOU'RE NOT LAZY! Dinner from a can is lazy. you want cheap meals, you have a little meat, lots of starches or veggies. You have a lot of tools to choose from. about 20% of your calories should come from protein, 20% from fat (that's the hard one to keep down) and the rest from carbs. Nobody ever taught you how to do it. I get that. It's fine. My point still stands. If you're lazy, or don't know how to put together a healthy meal on the cheap, you think that McD's is a cheap meal. (your insistence that you can't eat cheaper than McD's is illustration of my point.) This is one of those things that people don't teach their kids anymore. Kids don't take home-ec anymore because there's too much pressure to take honors classes to get college scholarships. Parents don't teach this to their kids, because they're too busy running them to after school activities to "pad their resumes" for college applications and scholarship apps. Either that or because the parents never learned it and we have a second-order problem. I used to be right there with you. "Fast food is cheap and easy, and you can't eat that cheaply at home..." or so I thought when I didn't NEED to be on a budget. Now when forced to be on budget, and keeping health a priority, I know it's not true. I can feed my family of 4 a quite tasty, fairly healthy meal for under $10 (total) at home. -- Rob
  7. pork, tomatoes, and pasta is an improvement on a double cheeseburger, but it's hardly a well rounded meal. No greens, you have processed carbs, and a fatty variety of red meat. Typically sugar in that tomato sauce, too. don't know what kind of tomato sauce you buy, but the stuff I buy doesn't contain anything but tomatoes, salt, garlic and preservatives. it's also about 1700cal of food. so for another $3 add some salad, upgrade to extra-lean beef, toss in some onion and garlic, and for about $6 I can feed two people about 1000cal each. I know you'll nit-pick something. That's fine, it's a web forum. It's what happens here. But my point is that it IS possible to eat well cheaply as long as you're not lazy. -- Rob
  8. 1000 calories of fast food costs about 3 bucks (two mcdonalds double cheese burgers). 3 bucks can buy me 1 can of tomato sauce, 1/2 lb pork sausage, and 1lb pasta. Were I to invest 20min of my time, I could turn that into dinner that is much healthier and has more nutritional value for $3. it's hard to eat healthy when you're poor and lazy. -- Rob
  9. that's nice. where? who got it? was any of it spent on public transit? considering that's what we're talking about I thought you might add some pertinent details rather than just throwing out a large impressive number so that we all are quite impressed and don't bother to worry about the situation anymore. -- Rob
  10. It's very difficult carry groceries riding a crowded bus. Are you proposing using the money to make room on the buses for groceries? Or buying more buses so that they are less crowded? yes and yes. if our public transit system were better (more frequent, and better designed spaces where people could put a grocery bag or two) there might be less people on the transit in off hours. Yeah, more people might ride it, which might mean it's not as uncrowded as it might be, but that's not a bad problem to have "too many people are using our public transit system... oh noez!!" -- Rob
  11. I don't know that I'd call it a scam, but couldn't they find something better to do in those neighborhoods with $400M? Maybe if the public transit were better boarding a bus wouldn't be such a hardship. Infrastructure investment... that's where the big money should have gone all along. -- Rob
  12. you forgot to add the emotional plea "but what about the children!!" oh wait, that comes from both sides. depends on the argument and the arguers whether you have emotional foaming at the mouth liberals or conservatives. Intellect driven? logical? those kind of people tend to stay out of those kinds of arguments and not waste time on forums like this. -- Rob

I'd like to point out that the words are "pursuit of happiness". Not just "happiness". Happiness is not a right. You are not constitutionally entitled to happiness. -- Rob
  15. Interesting writing. Can tradition be responsible for an uptick in recruitment? Can you suddenly get more tradition? Do they display an esprit de corps now that they didn't have last year or the year before? If a person were to decide to join the military, tradition and esprit de corps could influence the choice of branch. Perhaps the marines believe they are getting more than their share of recruits for these reasons. Joinong "military" is one thing, for work....to Join the "marines"? Are they fuckin Nuts? not is not just a job/paycheck...your going to work your ass off, for shit pay...and maybe get repaid with a purple heat! That was a pretty left wing liberal statement there Gypsy... considering the time of day and his tyops... bartender, I'll one of what he's having! -- Rob

so because I can get water to boil at 95C, you admit that AGW (consensus science) is junk? -- Rob
  17. I see the same from both sides of the fence here for the TX gov race. both sides accuse the other of corruption and criminal activity. At least the Bill White can make fun of his own ears (once heard them described as "so big he can hear the sun come up"). -- Rob
  18. only english speakers know how to fix computers? -- Rob
  19. I'd bet it's a bit of both. I know 2 young men who decided to join up out of patriotism. I also know 2 not so young men who are going back to military service because they're out of a job. -- Rob

  21. Smallest I have ever heard of covered 16 "square" miles... Myself, I see it as a Pussies way out, BUT, who has a rigth to tell people that they can not allow poeple to hunt on private property, for Game they raised and fed? in most states, the game warden. in-season and within bag limits? That's another question. -- Rob
