I actually did see a survey crew this week in the field where it's supposed to go up. I drive past the area almost every day. I've no idea when any construction will start, but at this point, with the planned phase one opening 18 months off, I'd bet the schedule is going to slip. -- Rob

Campus Concealed Carry likely to make a showing in TX this session

so are you talking about licensed concealed carry of a handgun (which at least in my state requires you to be 21 years old to own and carry one) or illegal carry by your 19yo accounting major who would already be breaking a law by carrying the gun in the first place (so why would he care about the guns on campuses law)?? Its 21 in IL too. Assume he's 21, my argument still stands your opinion still stands. And it shall. I have no reason to want to change your mind. I think people here are just trying to understand your reasons. Emotional reasons are understandable. That's ok. I just don't see any logic in not allowing CHL-carry on campus, but allowing it across the street. Why is it ok to carry a concealed handgun in an off-campus apartment that's 25 yards from campus, but it's not OK to carry concealed ON campus. Were I to go down to the university area here in Austin, I'd have to be careful which side of the street I was walking on for several blocks. Does that make sense? For the rest of the state, people who put up the proper signs to prevent me carrying on their property are only preventing me from carrying in "permanent structures". Were the university here to do the same thing, posting those signs at entrances to campus, I would still not be able to carry inside a building. So why should a building on a college campus be different from a building across the street from the college campus?? -- Rob -

if a law passes allowing concealed carry, the streets will run with blood and it will be like the old west hey look. that didn't happen either! http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/09/09/national/main521212.shtml so your theory is that because there exist crimes that aren't reported, we must eliminate guns on campus because they might prevent crimes that haven't happened (and may not be reported) because the guns carried by concealed carriers actually did cause blood to run in the streets, and old-west shootouts, but those crimes weren't reported. riiight.. -- Rob -

if that were where it all takes place, this argument might have part of a leg to fall over from. But most of the partying takes place off campus. pick a college campus. find out it's on campus housing capacity. sort out it's enrollment demographics. Guesstimate the 18-25 enrollment population (the partiers). do the math to figure the percentage of those who have room to live on campus. (I won't do the math because I don't want to be accused of cherry picking) I'd bet that for a very large percentage of college campuses, the majority of the 18-25 population doesn't have room to live on campus. Thus the majority of the partying doesn't take place on campus. -- Rob -

when was the last college party accidental shooting in the news? ever? On or off campus? is that because they don't have any guns, or because the ones with guns off campus. I know you're pro-gun. We're on the same page wrt personal responsibility & accountability. My point is that any partying that will go on is likely off campus where guns are already allowed. -- Rob -

That's why it is illegal. look! it's the knee-jerk reaction I expect. no, it's illegal because someone saw animal house too many times and thinks that just because it's illegal to have guns on campus, there won't be guns where the partying is taking place (which is mostly off campus where the guns are perfectly legal). Yes, alcohol and guns shouldn't mix. (except shooting at empty beer cans) But this law has less to do with that and more to do with fear of guns. -- Rob -
I really do wish you were capable of adding ANY FUCKING THING useful to ANY conversation am I in the wrong place? Isn't this dropzone.com? You mean there's supposed to be useful conversation here? wow... all I've seen the past few months are veiled personal attacks, horrible spelling and grammar, a bunch of people claiming more knowledge than they demonstrate (over a bunch of topics) and a whole bunch of wasted time. (oh yeah, and boobies in a different thread... lotsa boobies) -- Rob

I'm on an email list that received a query from blackwater asking for experienced operators to come help in NOLA post-katrina. The described mission was protecting communications hubs (at the request of city officials) and harrah's casino (at the request of harrah's). I ignored the query because I'm not an "experienced operator", but it's interesting to recall that email with the added context of this article. -- Rob

Yes, you can make a decision to not be sofa king lazy, and not buy the happy meal. Walk around. Get off the couch and do something. It REALLY is that simple . . . Well, it is, if you beliee that the government shouldn't be your life coach or your babysitter or your provider. Of course exercise is an important part of the equation but its only part of the solution, diet has to be included in any fight against societal obesity. go read the food deserts thread. it's not cheaper to eat fast foot unless you're too fucking lazy to cook a meal -- Rob

I've noticed other fast food places aren't putting toys in their kids meals now. Instead there is the choice between 2-3 kinds of cookies, or apple slices. That is when they ask. sometimes it's just a cookie without asking. -- Rob

interestingly.... legalization of pot is largely seen as a liberal issue. But really it's a state's rights issue under the covers. State's rights, is largely seen as a conservative issue. -- Rob

some place like Utah? Where campus concealed carry is legal? No one ever counts Utah - outlier in so many ways. Texas has the population, and the population diversity, to make the argument stick. and Colorado doesn't count either? -- Rob -
wow... we're not even talking about politics, and you can avoid the get off my high horse remark. I must have struck a nerve. dont worry, the mods wont call you for a PA, you're on theiir side politically. I'll try it in another thread in a couple of days though and lets see what happens. -- Rob

my point was that the mixing of alcohol and college students happens almost entirely off campus where there are already guns. That that fact is lost on most of those that pull out that argument (mixing guns and drunk partying college kids) is where it becomes knee-jerk. you and I are on the same page with personal accountability. You should know that by now. A CHL holder being intoxicated while carrying a gun in TX is (correct me if I'm wrong someone) a class A misdemeanor. (and I can't remember the typical punishment, but someone will post that. dave probably knows off the top of his head) Regardless of if the gun was used at all. It actually used to be more severe, as the statute used to read "under the influence" which was up to the interpretation of the arresting officer. That wording was recently changed to "intoxicated" with the definition referring to the intoxication and alcoholic beverages section of penal code. -- Rob -
This post came across to me as more mean than you probably intended. that's ok... don't you know that Mods aren't capable of personal attacks? :) -- Rob

I love that argument... It's so knee-jerk and not thought out. so how is this different from right now? The majority of partying doesn't happen ON campus. (which is all we're talking about changing here) So anyone in TX who can legally own a handgun could be your drunk partier. When was the last time you heard news about a drunk off-campus partier getting shot or shooting someone? -- Rob -

I may add diced tomatoes to the sauce, but I'm not eating pasta with plain tomatoes, and by the time you've added the spices, have you gained anything? This is a case where the 50 cents saved isn't worth it. weren't we talking about eating healthy? for the same amount of money? use $0.50 in spices... knock yourself out! -- Rob
