fify taxes should be raised, and budgets should be cut. Both actions are required to close the gap. -- Rob

About 5 years ago when I first heard of the Tea Party, I thought "hey... I can get behind this shit. They're all about fiscal responsibility, paying rather than borrowing, states rights, constituationalists... yeah.. I like this" Then the nutters like Beck decided that they were Tea Partiers... except they changed the meaning of the movement. Now it's a fringe right group (no matter how it started, that's how it's perceived) and not one I have any interest in. -- Rob

CA already has a concealed carry permit on it's books. But it's not a "shall issue" permit. And from what I've read you have to know a judge or be famous (or both) in order to get one. -- Rob

Four in 10 Americans Believe in Strict Creationism?
rhaig replied to vortexring's topic in Speakers Corner
It's been 20 years since I took a stats class, but we talked about polls and I remember someone asking why many polls listed +-3% as error margin. The answer was because of the diminishing returns beyond 1500 sample size where the error is +-3% based on some formula I forgot 19.5 years ago. So with 1019, I'm guessing that formula spit out +-4%. +1 to what everyone else said about complexity of the issue and random sample. -- Rob -

they are politicians. They were elected to do what was best. In reality, they do what it takes to get re-elected. We need fewer politicians, and more public servants. -- Rob

If the majority of Americans are either stupid or insane, democracy cannot work. Maybe there should be a dictator for a little while then? Or at least suspend democracy for a bit, since obviously Americans do not know what is best for themselves? You're right. A pure democracy won't work. Maybe we should have a republic then. -- Rob
-
So, the American people would be stupid or insane for not recognizing this? they elected Hopey McChangey didn't they? And you're asking NOW about stupidity and insanity? -- Rob

probably because he realizes (on some level) that more and more texans dislike him and he wants to promote out before so many dislike him that he's out of a job. And not to come to his defense (because I wouldn't defend him), but wtf (other than touring and glad-handing and making statements on TV) is a gov supposed to do? -- Rob

Once again the media whips everyone into a frenzy...
rhaig replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
best answer ever that I heard to that was this morning from a guy from NWS (I think it was NWS). It was something along the lines of "if only we could make the same progress in intensity forecasting that we have made in track forecasting." -- Rob -

let me summarize: "your argument sucks!" "no!! you're wrong!" "am not!" "are too!" "are you drunk?" "no! are you drunk?" "I am rubber, you are glue..." yes yes... we all get the idea by now. next! -- Rob -
Once again the media whips everyone into a frenzy...
rhaig replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
certainly. I'm glad that regular programming here in TX was interrupted so that we could see coverage of those warnings and evacuations. Wait... no I'm not. It's news, but it's not an emergency here. The OP complaints were about the media frenzy. what do "timely, urgent warnings" have to do with the nation wide media frenzy. -- Rob -
I'm not a fan of Rick Perry. I won't even pretend to support him. But the point of billing the feds for this (as it was pointed out Napolitano also did) is to draw attention to the fact that the border is like a sieve and the border states are having to pay to clean up that mess. As to saving money by deporting them... Again, a federal agency does that. ICE agents get a call when the illegals are done with their prison sentences for crimes they have committed here, and they're held until ICE shows up, or until the end of the day. ICE tends to not show up, and the illegals are cut loose. And yes, it's somewhat of a publicity stunt. sure... he's a politician. He'll take free publicity. What is interesting would be to see his reaction (likely none) when the feds receive a bill like that if he becomes president. -- Rob

Republicans Propose New tax on Everyone but the wealthy.
rhaig replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
it's right out of the playbook of "get re-elected". You never see anything "right" done by politicians. You always see the "get re-elected" thing done. Yes, raising taxes a bit across the board might be the right thing to do now, but you're not going to see any politician vote for it if it directly affects the take-home pay of their expected voters. -- Rob -
likely all true. but I still think he's the best shot we have at righting things. As usual, we'll end up with the lesser of two evils. -- Rob

we need fewer politicians, and more public servants. I think Ron Paul is the best shot we have right now. -- Rob

that's right... campaign promise. that's all it amounts to. She's a politician. Of course she's going to pander to folks who want cheap gas and think she can deliver. All the politicians do that. -- Rob

What does "open concealed" mean? it's similar to your position on gun control: unclear ha ha.... actually I thought the same thing when I read that. -- Rob

Warren Buffett calls for higher taxes for US super rich
rhaig replied to dreamdancer's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't disagree... the "raise taxes" mantra starts with the rich "because they can afford it" (they have more than me and they're not entitled to it), which doesn't directly effect me because I'm not rich (so I don't care). But, it may ultimately result in taxes being higher on more income brackets which could directly effect me. Whether or not raising taxes will increase tax revenue is a subject of hot debate. Bottom line is that we need more tax revenue. Will increasing taxes do that? In the long term too? ALSO we need less spending (when the sum total annual income of everyone who makes more than 1M/year is less than the annual budget, taxing the rich isn't going to help). -- Rob -
What?! So then why would they distance themselves from him? because the tea party movement that I originally supported was co-opted by the extreme fringe right. They don't support individual freedoms as much as Ron Paul. -- Rob

+1 The fact that he was in Texas at the time trying to get factual news of the events is rather telling. I don't think his location had anything to do with the accuracy of his news sources (CNN, FOX). If he'd tried to get local news reports, then your assumption might have some traction. The fact that he was in the US trying to get news about something media would prefer to sell "dirty laundry" about... that's way more telling than his physical location when querying news sources headquartered in a different state. -- Rob
