what I've seen is soft contact, spray, then hard contact. your 20 and 3 are different injury classes and as such you're comparing apples and oranges. 20 OC sprayed vs 3 with mechanical injuries that could take much longer to recover from and (more importantly to the campus police department) would open the university to more lawsuits. so if you're going to insist on the apples/oranges comparison, I'd say that yes, 20 OC sprayed protesters is less than 3 protesters with anything up to and including broken bones and dislocated joints (depending on the level of physical resistance). Not to mention that none of us were there, and as such couldn't gauge the likelihood of the crowd escalating violence if they saw officers injuring protesters. (which several in this thread seem to rather have happened, yourself included) -- Rob

How long should protestors be allowed to occupy a piece of ground?

as long as they don't infringe on the rights or safety of others who wish to also legally use the same general area. -- Rob -

so at what point do protesters become revolutionary fighters?? -- Rob -
you seem to have missed the part about officers have been given procedures to follow instead of common sense. procedures say that OC is lower on the force index than physically separating and moving protesters so the officers could leave. if they don't respond to OC, then the officers are able to step up to hard physical response. (typically... I don't know the use of force doctrine for UCD police, but I suspect it is similar to what I've read here). -- Rob

PA, but those rules don't apply to you... you're more equal. Police used to help people. Now they've been given procedures to follow (rather than common sense) because the greedy entitled populace became too litigious. The serve in protect went away many many years ago (unless you're talking about a warrant), and the protect is gone as well. Part of it we let happen to ourselves by letting the wrong people lead. Part of it was the result of our actions. And part of it just happened to us because of the way the system grew. Yeah, cops aren't given the benefit of the doubt anymore. They aren't looked up to, and most people have a negative opinion of cops because they only deal with cops when they've done something wrong. The cops I know who think something is wrong with the system can't do much to fix it without losing their jobs, but they'd rather act slowly from inside than be unemployed and not be able to do as much from the outside. Yeah, the system is fucked up. But on the street is not where to get into a constitutional argument with "the system". That discussion belongs in a court room. -- Rob

wouldn't feed those to my dog. much better local place just down the road. -- Rob

Nope.. wrong answer.. but I guess in YOUR world you are just peachy keen with the evolving Police state. clearly she would rather the officers physically wrench the protesters apart. That way they could claim assault and battery and have injuries to show for it. Makes better news that way. -- Rob

all people are created equal. but some aren't as equal as Amazon is. Her opinion matters more. -- Rob

[reply I think the fact that you don't have a clue of how discussions work is the main reason you think I'm "misguided". The fact that you think there is a way this should work is cute. http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/duty_calls.png It's an internet forum. You can't count on someone's opinion being consistent here much less any rules of order. -- Rob

Irrelevant. Unfortunately making sense does appear irrelevant in American elections. -- Rob

again you assume you know my opinion. You keep assuming. Clearly you know what Benny Hill said because I see you often type "ASSume". So I can only ASSume that you are voluntarily making an ASS out of U and ME. -- Rob -

Even my friends who are very republican (I'm more libertarian) call him Gov. Hair, or Gov. Pointy boots. He's pretty openly made fun of. Yeah... out for himself. Pretty clear. I'm with you, but unfortunately I think aside from one or two candidates that aren't getting much media coverage, "old guard" is all that's left. On both sides! -- Rob

The media's purpose is to earn money by selling advertisement space. All else is rubbish. That. there used to be a duty to find and report the truth that the media carried with some integrity attached. Now it's all about the advertising dollars. Well there are plenty of alternatives to FAUX News.... but I know you guys love that whole...."Where never is heard... a discouraging word" yeah well, I was talking about ALL news media outlets, but your blinders are on... troll is all you do anymore eh? you used to have some witty comments. Sometimes funny. What happened? Now it seems every thread you're active in makes me wish for the ignore feature in this forum software. They all turn into you trolling, getting responded to, and immediate troll rebuttal. -- Rob

didn't even cross my mind. you want to keep bring W into this... fine. That's on you. If that's what it takes to be happy with your current administration... "at least he's not Bush" (which should have been his campaign slogan) -- Rob

a link to a site that has information about one's rights to carry licensed concealed weapons should be banned? oh... you're just talking about the inconsistency of moderation policies... well, you get away with a lot around here too... so we'll let it go. -- Rob

as idiotic and naive as many of these protesters can sound, there are a few points they (well, the ones that aren't out there to look cool) have right that are hard to disagree with. -- corporations are not people, they shouldn't be treated like they are -- lobbyists shouldn't be writing legislation and handing it to congresscritters -- donations from non-voters (corporations) can really only serve to create influence and shouldn't be allowed. I don't agree with much of what they say. Many of them are lazy, self-entitled whiners. Many are trust-funders who are close to being the 1% they complain about. BUT, I'm glad they're out there speaking their minds. The only way we keep our rights is by exercising them. Watching first amendment rights being limited will only highlight how important they are. -- Rob

[reply BUT most of the Texicans here in SC... uh huh...I am betting have never voted for anyone who does not think in lockstep with them... Go to the same kind of churches as they do.. nor have the same general complexion as either Bush or Perry if that were the case, then none of them would have ever voted. Your shortsighted assumptions, are about as complete as your flawed logic. yes, there are some bush defenders here. But there are at least as many obamapologists. blindly defending anyone based on their party affiliation is, to borrow a phrase, goat fuck stupid. -- Rob

This would only be true if there were not blacks that are racist against whites. bud didn't you know? black on white racism isn't racism... It's deserved for generations of judgement based only on the color of one's skin... oh wait... my bad. -- Rob
