Hi Roger, Were they not mounted on the outside like a PopTop? Although I do not know the details on how they worked. Jerry

I once got a letter from Steve Snyder and from the return address on the envleope (not his address) it lead me to believe that there were patent attorneys in his family. Jerry

Hi WuffoNoMo, If you decide to go, I would suggest you get on the PIA website, go to Symposium and print out the schedule of seminars. Then plan what you want to attend before you get there. That will help you focus on what is important to you. Jerry PS) I would highly recommend your going if you have the $$$$.

Questions About USPA Budget
JerryBaumchen replied to WatchYourStep's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi Matt, With over 40 yrs membership in PCA/USPA, I could not agree less with this statement. Does a GI get to complain/not complain because he/she did/did not for for Pres. Bush? All members are of equal standing. And I have voted everytime without fail, Jerry -
What's the name of that crazy guy...?
JerryBaumchen replied to autoset's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi Mark, Look at the video again; two different patterned canopies = two different jumps. Jerry -
Hi scratch, Interesting. I read the poll question/understood it. I looked at the pic/understood it. I then answered correctly; or at least the 80+% correctly. Easy, Jerry

Questions About USPA Budget
JerryBaumchen replied to WatchYourStep's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
First, I have never read the USPA constitution. As I 'understand' it, the Exec Dir gets to hire/fire everyone under him. The USPA Pres can fire the Exec Dir; I know three that got the axe in my decades of membership. Jerry PS) This is going to be an interesting one to sit back and watch. -
Hi Howard, When that rig came out and we saw the first one, a local gear dealer said that the most expensive part of the rig was the Capewells and the Velcro. Jerry

Hi Howard, Don't recall the canopy; the only thing I remember with a Cat's Eye was Pioneer's 23 ft Tri-Conical. Pioneer was just behind the curve of what was going on with gear development out here on the west coast. They were doing their damndest to catch up but never did. By then, most folks had left Pioneer and their sport gear way behind them. However, that does look like a Jerry Bird (no ripcord) reserve container. Jerry

Hi Jim, I knew all of these guys well: Ski, Lenny Aikins, Jessie Aikins, Jack Massey, Charles Bunch, Ron Dixon, Nick Wilson, Andrew Ramage, Ron Hermann, Ken Gorman. Drew Ramage was a Portland-area jumper so I was good friends with him, he was a great guy and a good jumper; haven't seen or talked with him in nearly 20 yrs. I have met/known: Ron Tavalero, Bill Smith, jeanni McCombs, Russ Gunby, Lyle Cameron. I was talking to jeanni at Elsinore just a week or so before she went in. You're right, it was the ParaPlane Silver Cloud; named after the Rolls Royce model of car. Whew, this mental exercise is making me tired; I need something to drink. Jerry

Hi Howard, Zing just beat me to it as to what, who designed; but I did not know that was Nate Pond under it. BTW, Nate is D-69 and his son is D-6969, right? As for pretty obscure, we're getting there ourselves. Jerry

Hey Zing, Here is a Hornet story for you. Mick Bevens ('74 US Team member) was running a small dz up in Bellingham, WA and Pioneer sent him a Hornet to try out and give them some feedback. After a bunch of jumps, he decided that the rearmost suspension lines really didn't do much so he cut them off. It still opened kind of ratty. Some time later, Mick wanted a square reserve so he just packed the Hornet into his reserve container. He said that he did it because it was the only extra square that he had available. Jerry

Hi jimp, It was a year or two prior to that where Ski brought a Snyder Rogallo wing up to Abbotsford for a meet that I was at. The 'wing' with the famous Snyder Wrap. He kind of flew it around the sky and finally just landed out in the grass. No accuracy machine that thing. Ski was always coming up with some crazy thing or other to jump. I think it was something in the water at Thun Field. Jerry

Early USPA Instructor Certification Courses...
JerryBaumchen replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
HI Howard, Let me try my luck: Front row, 3rd from right is Stillwell, next to Istel On the other side of Istel, front row, is Gunby 2nd row, 2nd from left is Perry Stevens 2nd row, 1st from right is Brydon Back row, 1st from right looks like Daryl Henry Back row, 3rd from right is Ed Fitch That's about it for me; how did I do? Jerry PS) Hi Guru, USPA came into being in '68; as I recall. But do not bet any $$$ on that. -
Early USPA Instructor Certification Courses...
JerryBaumchen replied to Guru312's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I always thought that the 'first' course was in '63. That is when Poynter, Perry Stevens, et al got their ratings. Yes?????? Jerry -
So what do you think???
JerryBaumchen replied to MakeItHappen's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My 2 cents: I think the high A's and not going farther are because about that time you are no longer wanting to rent gear. It is now time to upen up the wallet and fork over at least $2000+ for gear; and a lot more if you are considering new gear. That is a big wakeup call for these folks. Again, just my thoughts. Sky Dive! The Movie, or was it Wings?
JerryBaumchen replied to PROGRESSIVE's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Howard, I saw that film in early 1960 while in Basic Training at Lackland AFB. I made the decision then and there to get to Orange one day and make a jump. Well, never made it to Orange but I did make a jump. Jerry -
Hi skymynci, What old American air base are you referring to? I was stationed at RAF Sculthorpe a few lifetimes ago. It was near Hunstanton. I was back there about four years ago and little is left. Jerry

Hi lekstrom, When I first looked at that photo I thought the same thing. And it may just be the main ripcord housing going over his shoulder. However, if you look at the top of the reserve container you will see a ripcord housing (covered) mounted on the right side of the pins/cones, not on the left as would be normal. Just my observation; I may be wrong, Jerry
-
Hi azureriders, First, I have never tested a reserve canopy. I have only used them to test other components. Two discussions quite some time ago: #1 with Bill Coe of PD) different reserve sizes are not constructed the same. It depends on where they fail and what reinforcing is req'd. #2 with John LeBlanc of PD) It is very difficult to get some sizes of reserves to stay together during the Strength testing phase. On the other hand, Geo. Galloway of Precision once said to me that every jump he made was illegal because his reserve (Raven) was limited to 254 lbs and he was 'slightly' over that weight. My 2 cents is that you will have a far greater probability of a failure on an over-loaded canopy. Anyone else????? Jerry

Burr on main closing pin cuts through bridle.
JerryBaumchen replied to Deuce's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi jheadley, 'They' are a part of the main container; oh, OK, the risers could be called part of the harness but why split hairs. The certificated stuff is the harness (and usually not to include any pads), the reserve container, the reserve pilot chute, the reserve d-bag, and the reserve ripcord. Did I miss anything? HTH, Jerry -
Hi zig, Actually, quite a few newer rigs have only Type 8 for the main lift web (i.e., Jav Odyssey). And some rigs have Type 8 for the leg straps (i.e., Velocity Infinity). And some wide 3-rings risers are of Type 6; remember the Swift? There is not consistency across all mfrs, Jerry

Hi chutebuilder, I think it was more of a case of grabbing a chest pack and snapping it on in freefall. Anyway, that was the 'story' back in the mid-60's. Jerry
