Official list of rig manufacturers offering the Skyhook
JerryBaumchen replied to CanEHdian's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi yeyo, I have 'heard' that a Mirage might possibly be able to be retro-fitted with a SkyHook. Contact Gus at Rigging Solutions and see what he might have to say. Jerry -
Buying a complete rig abroad
JerryBaumchen replied to Jazzthieve's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi jazz, Try emailing some of the larger retailers; they quite often have a substantial inventory of used stuff. Square 1 Aerostore Para-Gear Chuting Star Jerry -
Hi Kevin, About 15 years ago I was working down in Brazil. Where I lodged was about 45 minutes from where I was working and the company provided a driver for me. One evening we were returning to the hotel and this amazing lightning storm was taking place (Brazil has the most amazing lightning storms I have ever seen, difficult to properly describe). I told the driver to pull over and stop and I spent about 1/2 hour just watching it. Life is just too short not to take advantage of these types of situations. Jerry

Hi BigSky, Skydive Oregon is the only one open 6 days a week. Take Exit 217 from I-5 and go east about 13 miles, if you get to the town of Molalla, turn around and go back about 1/2 mile. Jerry PS) They have a website.

Official list of rig manufacturers offering the Skyhook
JerryBaumchen replied to CanEHdian's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi Rob, I was talking to John about his Lariat system and he seemed to indicate it was a dead issue. Take this as rumor only, Jerry -
Hi howard, That bird is owned by Jack Ady of the Seattle Skydivers and '65 US National Champ. I was talking to him last summer and he said she is just sitting (and has been for a loonngg time) at the Snohomish airport. She needs new covering and he said that the aircraft is not worth the cost of recovering her. So she just sits. Too bad because she was a unique jump ship. Skratch, wasn't Sunny Yates the guy who went blind and continued to jump for some time? Jerry

Hi CanEHdian, I heard that he has ~10 signed contracts for the license. I have no idea as to when they will have them developed and offered. Jerry -
Steering line keeper ring standard spec?
JerryBaumchen replied to councilman24's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi Terry, I got to thinking about this some more later last night. Why the top of the guide ring is used is because this allows any size ring to be used and the brake loop will be correct. It is simple geometry; if you have two rings, one large and one small. If you put one on one riser and the other on the other riser, but both at 4" from the top; then, no matter what size of the guide ring(s), the brake loop will always go to the top of the inside of the guide ring(s) which it wants to do when it has tension on it. Therefore, the brake loop is in the correct location no matter what size of guide ring is used. Simple concept, huh? Jerry -

Hi Terry, My 2 cents: from the top of the riser to the top edge of the ring. Jerry -

Hi alone, Get on Skydiving Magazine's website, send them an email and see what they recommend. It should work. Jerry -
Hi ian, You will NOT get any info on canopy volumes from PD. About 15 months ago I had an over-hour-long telephone conversation with John LeBlanc (who I consider one of the friendliest people in the business) and he would not give any info on their pack volumes. If you don't believe me on PD's position on this issue, give'm a call and see what they say. If they give you some info I would like to know what it might be. Jerry

can one of you old-timers explain....
JerryBaumchen replied to crotalus01's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi steve1, Since I do not see a PopTop pilot chute I am thinking it might be Security's version. They built a slim-pack reserve very much like a PopTop (even with the pins on the back side) but with the pilot chute inside of the container. Just my guess on a fuzzy photo, Jerry PS) This is kinda fun going down Memory Lane. -

Hi howard, And to think that I did a Preview Post before sending it. You are very correct and I was incorrect; not the first time. Jerry -
can one of you old-timers explain....
JerryBaumchen replied to crotalus01's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi steve1, The first center pull chest packs that I know of (mid '60's) were where a ripcord was mounted on the rear of the chest pack and used a ripcord housing going around to the pins which were side pull. However, I think you are thinking of the 'real' center pull rigs. Strong's StyleMaster had rotating pins so that you could use a side or center pull ripcord. His first center pull ripcords used two pins, two cables & two balls and the cables went outside of the elastic ripcord pocket. This resulted in some bent pins. He then changed the design to where it used a single cable, going through two holes in the handle (the cable was in a 'U' shape) and with two pins. This allowed/req'd the cable & pins to go through the ripcord pocket therefore preventing a bent pin situation. Also, the PopTop preceded the StyleMaster as a center pull but it had the pins on the back side of the container, just like a Racer does to this day. Does that answer it for you? Jerry -
The hidden [monetary] costs of skydiving.
JerryBaumchen replied to gontleman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi peregrine, I'm with you. If I cannot devote at least 3 hours, then I won't do the repack; and it is not just a 'repack', that went out a loonnnggg time ago. Jerry PS) I do not do it for the money; the wage rates are too low. I also do not do it for free. -
Ripped off for 1300 dollars on Dropzone.com
JerryBaumchen replied to kzeier's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I sold a rig last year (for a friend of mine; I was the 'middleman' on this end). The intended buyer was a regular poster here (and someone who's posts I respect). I asked for a middleman on his end, he selected the DZO. I contacted the DZO and said to contact me when she had the money in her grubby little hands. She did, I shipped the rig, she/someone inspected it and sent me the money. Worked just fine. I like the use of the middleman because, hopefully, it takes any bias/scam out of it. However, I also req'd that the buyer put the money up prior to any shipment so that I knew there was good faith. Jerry -
Hi bigway, Pioneer tried this back in the 60's. Every now and then a buyer would get a phone call asking him what he paid for his ParaCommander. A local dealer would just give you about $50 trade-in for an old 'worth a buck' ripcord. The marketplace will decide what happens; at least, it always has. Jerry

Going thru these posts is like a trip down Memory Lane. The two 'classics' have to be: Gone With the Wind & Casablanca. However, my alltime favorite is A Thousand Clowns. Jerry

Hi mean, I may (probably really do) suffer from some type of 'reader's block' but when I looked the the nine photos and one sketch in their manual, I could not determine that they were actually showing to tack through both sides of the webbing that forms the loop at the top of the riser. As I looked at them, only the second picture possibly shows the needle piercing the 2nd webbing of the loop and the other pictures look (to me anyway) that the tacking is only going through one leg of the webbing; which obviously would not hold anything. It would be much clearer if the sketch (at the end of the pictures) showed the pieces of the riser webbing and the tack cord going through them. I sent the written description of the procedure to Karl because he works for them; oh, and I wanted to con him into a free drink. Thanks for your response, I always welcome anyone who can offer a different thought than what I think. Jerry PS) Hi slotperfect. MY BAD! Hand appropiately slapped.

Hi pops, You may have a small 3-ring harness ring (mini-risers type) on one rig and a large 3-ring harness ring (standard type) on the other rig. I took one of each 3-ring harness rings out of my stock and measured the I.D. of each: 1. Large harness 3-ring / #445 (by DJ Associates): measures 1 3/4" on the I.D. (you would list this as 1 12/16: 2. Small harness 3-ring (mini-riser type) / #444 (by DJ Associates): measures 1 5/16" on the I.D. That leads me to believe that your Rig #1 has the small (mini) 3-ring harness ring and that your Rig #2 has the large (standard) 3-ring harness ring. Anybody else with a thought on this? Jerry PS) On a large (standard) 3-ring harness ring the sides of the 'D' ring go straight up to where the '0' is formed. On a small (mini-type) 3-ring harness ring the sides of the 'D' ring go up but taper towards the center (makes it look somewhat like a triangle with a round apex).
