  1. Hi howard, Well, what do I win? It's done by feel. JerryBaumchen
  2. Hi skymama, For young guys on crotch rockets, 125 is not fast at all. JerryBaumchen
  3. Graduate from college; an education was not valued in my family when I was a kid. JerryBaumchen, PE
  4. Hi bigway, A number of years ago I helped a jumper from an Eastern European country with a gift cert. His cert. was only for the base price of the gear; all extra 'goodies' were at full retail. JerryBaumchen
  5. Hi howard, That Pat Works: everyone knows that the correct terminology is an RCH. Jerry Baumchen
  6. Not an XBO, Steve. I 'think' it is an East German 'version' of a PC used in about '66. So do I get the prize? Jerry Baumchen
  7. Did mine into Battleground Lake. Donated a main ripcord to the bottom of that lake. Came in on a ParaCommander with lots of brakes on and just before touchdown, let go of the toggles and it surged forward (nothing like what would happen on a modern canopy, though), I came back up between the risers, popped the leg snaps, dropped under a riser and held on to the rig until the boat came over and said "Wanna lift?" That lake was COLD. Jerry Baumchen
  8. Hi Folks, At the PIA in Reno earlier this year I asked Bill Booth if he submitted a Minor Change regarding the SkyHook. He said that he did not because he did not feel that it was a change. Given that, the FAA knows nothing about the SkyHook system. Now if that is the case, then it would seem (to me at least) that there is really no control on who can retro-fit a SkyHook; short of getting the goodies and specs from UPT. Thoughts? Jerry Baumchen
  9. Hi howard, Musta been about late '70's by the rigs. A wonderhog in the door; another one on the top of the stairs; the next guy down has a rig that I cannot determine, possibly Strong with how the main container is built; then a 'Jerry Bird' Velcro-rig for the lowest guy on the stairs; and then the guy on far left with a Security System. That's all I recognize; anyone else? Jerry
  10. I believe that it was Larry Krueger; who now owns National Parachute in NJ. But I might be wrong! Jerry
  11. Hi Zing, If you look closely (and were around in those days, and maybe you were) it has the adjusting main lift web going up and down at the center link of the d-ring. That was a common way to build a Pioneer 3-pin rig, which I think is what Luis jumped. Jerry
  12. Hi howard, Note the ever popular AeroIndicator panel in photo #2. Jerry
  13. Hi howard, One interesting thing is that Luis does not have his reserve on. Jerry
  14. Hi sraja, The Rainier Brewing Company (no longer in business) used to sponsor Ted Mayfield. He had an awful lot of canopies with that big red R in them. Jerry Baumchen
  15. Hi freestyle, I've done it; it is not the easiest thing to do. You need a good pilot that knows what to do, you need to have your actions planned and then you need to do things quickly. It is a short window of time for you to get the door open and yourself out. This type of exit has the potential for a lot of things that could/can go wrong. Jerry PS) Is this some type of bandit jump you are thinking about making?
  16. Hi Howard, I like that it says the mileage is even better in free fall. Jerry
  17. Hi Howard, One other little tidbit about this; in '65 Hal Evans put on a competition in Las Vegas and Daryl Henry showed up with a prototype Pioneer Para-Twin rig (their version of a piggyback and in Canada he could jump it without a TSO). Well, Daryl got injured on a layout landing and Cameron went on about how the Pioneer piggyback was dangerous and rarely worked, etc, etc. The story that was going around was that the Pioneer reserve hung lower on your back after opening and this is what caused Daryl's injury. Jerry
  18. He was a west coast-type; had his name in SKYDIVER quite a bit back in those days; rather hard-core accuracy guy. Jerry
  19. Hi Howard, I remember both articles: Daryl's was the complete article on how to fly the PC (man, did we ever study that writeup, plus the standard Sat. nite tavern arguements on whether he was right or not); where the 2nd article was more in the line of 'How to love your PC.' I cannot remember the author of the 2nd article; who was it? Jerry
  20. Hi Howard, I remember that photo very well. Note the long risers the Army boys used. Cameron took EVERY opportunity to knock the ParaCommander; . However, it was THE canopy for many a year. Jerry
  21. Try landsend.com They have a folding w/frame that is self-inflating. They call it the EZ-Bed. Jerry
  22. I had the opportunity to buy him lunch earlier this year ( first time I had ever met him ); a helluva nice guy. Jerry
  23. Hi kturnau, I made my first jump 9 Feb 64. In those days if you made 10 jumps, two were probably 'off.' Way too many to count, Jerry
  24. Hi efs4ever, 17 Sep 67 (the day before my birthday; I wokeup on my birthday in the hospital) I was sitting in the seat (that is difficult to see) in this doorway. We went almost straight in. I can still see the blades of grass coming up at me and saying to myself "I'm going to die in an airplane crash." Almost 40 yrs of Bonus Time. It just was not my day, Jerry
