Collapsible and Behind the Head slider?
JerryBaumchen replied to west33freefall's topic in Gear and Rigging
In the late '60's Velcro was the hottest thing in skydiving. Today it looks like magnets. Ever think about the fact that the spring in your pilot chute is ferrous steel? I would hate to see a reserve pilot chute get caught by a magnet. Most people will say slim to no chance; but then again . . . . . JerryBaumchen -
Hi hack, I would still send an email to PD to determine the correct & latest dimensions. I was talking with one of the 'top dogs' there earlier this summer about these very dimensions regarding a PDR 160 and they have made some dimensional changes, for the 160. I do not know about the 143. Just my thoughts, JerryBaumchen

Baton pass jump / 50th anniversary

Hi Jim, I gotta look a little askance on Story Three. You would think after 50 yrs we would have heard about 'this' by now. JerryBaumchen -
Baton pass jump / 50th anniversary
JerryBaumchen replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Peter, Re: I just wish we had a decent English language account somewhere of the French baton pass. Send me an email, I might just have a contact for you, JerryBaumchen -
Hi Nick, In a way Arthur Godfrey is why I ended up being a jumper. When I was about 15 or so I was home sick one day. I was watching his daytime tv show and he mentioned that he had made a jump. I thought 'WOWEE, I gotta try that.' Well, nine years later I went out for just the one jump ( I thought that anyone who jumped more than once was probably rather suicidal ) and never to look back. Oh how things did not work out as planned . . . . . JerryBaumchen

Another Legal Question - Neighbor McNasty
JerryBaumchen replied to kkeenan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi sparky, Amen to that. I jumped at a dz that had to close because of some non-local jumpers who landed off and when the local farmed inquired about their landing in his crops, they threatented to kick the s*** out of him, along with some other threats. The farmer informally organized the other farmers, after a few years it went to the county commissioners and they revoked the dz's land use permit or whatever they had originally granted for the dz to be there. It only takes one smart-mouthed jumper to ruin years of goodwill. JerryBaumchen -
Hi bill, A good rule of thumb. A lot depends on the definition of 'jumps.' I once jumped a StratoCloud with over 3,000 jumps on it. I knew it was well worn out. It opened OK but I knew that the only landing would have to be full-speed with a hard flare. I did that but the canopy didn't; it pounded me in as if I had not touched the toggles. All part of the game we play. JerryBaumchen PS) This was a student rig at a dz that I frequented.

Baton pass jump / 50th anniversary
JerryBaumchen replied to pchapman's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Peter, If you truly want to replicate the old days then go down to your local Sears store and buy three sets of coveralls. The really kewl jumpsuit 'back in the day.' JerryBaumchen -
Hi tbrown, To the best of my knowledge no Para-Flite canopy ever 'actually' failed any TSO testing. And who would tell anyway? I seem to remember some bad-mouthing by Tony Frost (Marana DZO) because they used a Para-Flite canopy to do the testing on a student rig they were developing; and the canopy failed during some of the testing. If you are testing a harness/container and the canopy blows up you have not failed any test. The canopy is not undergoing the testing. JerryBaumchen

Forcing businesses to provide for illegal workers
JerryBaumchen replied to AggieDave's topic in Speakers Corner
Hi Aggie, I'm with you; this kind of stuff is as looney as it gets. Now tie that in with the news tonight that 'minorities' will be over 50% of the US population by 2050 and just take a couple of guesses what type of legislation you will be seeing. JerryBaumchen PS) Now I suppose I'll get arrested because the Latino who mows my lawn is illegal; good thing my son is an attorney. Paying for his law school might just turn out to be the best investment I ever made. -
Hi Terry, I find your posting interesting. Something about like minds thinking alike?????? I've been 'playing' with the same thoughts since I found out earlier today that her name will be placed in nomination. She (and BillyBoy) is one person that I simply do not trust. JerryBaumchen PS) If I remember correctly Lincoln got the nomination on the 4th ballot after a deadlocked convention.

Hi Scott, Well, you are mostly right. In those days it had two Cessnas & two Beech D-18's. Roch had over 14,000 jumps when he went in; he was well known for pulling low or getting out very low. I wouldn't send my ex-wife there to make a first jump. Very true; a paradise for the experienced jumpers. JerryBaumchen

Hi Bonnie, How about a photo or two so people can see just what it is like? Might just result in a few more sales. JerryBaumchen

Hi dgw, Contact Square1, they make & sell longer curved pins. JerryBaumchen

Hi bozo, I cannot speak regarding the low cutaway fatality. But I do know that Ted was not on the plane when the 80+ yr old guy went in. How do I know; because I got called before the Grand Jury to testify. JerryBaumchen
-
Hi Bill, I don't have enough years left to tell you everything that was wrong at his dz. I 'think' the actual event was with a student who cutaway too low and was killed. And then there was the 80+ yr old guy who was put out on a skydiving rig that Ted had hooked up the static line so that the main could not open. It was a dz that was great for those of us who wanted 'no rules' skydiving, but not a place for students. JerryBaumchen

Hi Scott, I 'think' that there have been others but almost all, if not all, of them have had it lifted after a few years of staying in the good graces of USPA. Ted's is still in effect. He has tried to get it lifted on numerous occasions but I doubt that he ever will. It really comes down to him admitting that he did things wrong for them to forgive him. And he will NEVER do that; he just does not believe that he did anything wrong. Just my thoughts . . . JerryBaumchen

Hi daniel, The last that I knew (many years ago) ANSI had a standard for helmets. It was the successor to the Snell Institute's standards. I do not remember the standard number; but Z-90 seems to ring a bell. ANSI = American National Standards Institute Hope that this helps, JerryBaumchen

Hi Unstable, I received an email from Ted Strong not too long ago and it indicated that they are working on a design of their own, not a SkyHook. JerryBaumchen

Hi Paul, I just came upon this thread. I happened to be in the crowd the day JFK gave his 'Eich Ein Berliner' (sp ??) speech. It was interesting to see the same kind of adulation being given to Obama. I'm glad that life has given me the chance to compare the two, JerryBaumchen

Hi howard, The next time you see Ted Mayfield ask him about his wire landing. By vote of the City Council that ended any thought of demos in Portland, OR. JerryBaumchen

Hi Hoop, Take a long breath and stay with us; you're a breath of fresh air amongst all the pollution. JerryBaumchen

Hi John, I am not for deleting it because that is a slippery slope that we should not start down. However, I would like to see it moved to somewhere other than HISTORY & TRIVIA (which it is not). Mods????? JerryBaumchen PS) And I agree with almost all of what Hoop has to say. I no longer read it; just a waste of time.
