A Lot Of Whuffos Around Here...
JerryBaumchen replied to Andy_Copland's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi likes, Am I the 'JerryB' that you are referring to here: If so, I have never said that I have issues with Brits. My last GF was a Brit and we had a great thing for over five years. I have never said that anyone should not be jumping in the USA. Just wanting clarification, JerryBaumchen -

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Reply To -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I actually don't support a lot of the things that the Democratic party espouses. I just happen to think Obama will be a better choice for President at the current time than McCain. If McCain were the same man he was in 2000, I'd probably feel the opposite way. I tend to be fairly conservative fiscally, am very much a believer in the Constitution (the whole thing, not just the 2nd Amendment), but am liberal socially. It is the quite astounding social backwardness of the Republican party that disgusts me. Especially the "covert" racism displayed by many of the more diehard types here in SC. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What he said. Progressive Companies in Portland, Oregon
JerryBaumchen replied to adventurechick's topic in The Bonfire
Hi Gawain, Interesting comment on the tax situation here (I live in Beaverton, grew up in PDX): A recent article in the paper (yesterday I think) states that Oregon is in 40th place for lowest overall taxes. That means that 39 other states tax their citizenry higher than we do. Now what's even better for me is that my retirements are exempt from state income taxes and since Oregon does not have a sales tax = I pay almost no taxes now. I sure paid my share when I was a working stiff though. JerryBaumchen -

Hi Dave, For me, the best thing tv has ever done was Band of Brothers. Second to that was Lonesome Dove. But for regularly scheduled programs I have to go with Rockford Files. Yup, showing my age again, JerryBaumchen

Damn Jim, Now you're taking me back. I remember one evening BS'ing with Shorty down in his basement where he had a packing table and all of his rigging gear. Good days, JerryBaumchen

Hi Squeak, Not to beat this old mare anymore but my posts were based upon the assumption that the pilot did not know of the illegal rig. If the pilot knew then he was a party to the violation and, IMO, needs to understand the risks of getting FAA-tagged. JerryBaumchen -
Do you have disaster preparations on hand?
JerryBaumchen replied to AggieDave's topic in Speakers Corner
Hi Dave, Well for one thing, I don't live in Tornado Alley. Last year a 76-yr old woman spent 14-15 days lost in the woods here in Oregon. She was found alive but not in the best of shape. Today she is doing very well. There were a lot of newspaper articles about survival that ran after she was found alive. One article ( by someone who knows 'I think' ) said that a human can survive for 30 days without food. But only about 5 days without water. I really don't want to find out about the 30-day thing, JerryBaumchen -
Hi Billy, Oregon has this law. My ex-wife got a ticket last year for not moving over. JerryBaumchen

JerryBaumchen replied to Andy_Copland's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi Squeak, I made my first jump in 1964 and my last jump in 2003. In all of those years, no pilot has ever asked me if my rig was legal or not, or to see my packing data card to determine if I was in date or not. I 'think' you have jumped here in the USA. What would you have thought if the pilot asked to see every packing data card of every jumper on the load(s) to determine if they were in date or not? JerryBaumchen PS) I jumped in Australia in 1990 & in 1994. Only the dz management asked to see my packing data card. I don't know the nitty-gritty of the rules in your country but I was legal and in date for my country. I hope that somehow I did not violate any pilot. I'd feel damn bad if I did. -
Hi pwln, One of the oldest is located on the airport at Snohomish, WA. It has changed operators a number of times but has never ceased operations since somewhere around the late '50's. The Seattle Skydivers are the oldest civilian club in the USA. JerryBaumchen

JerryBaumchen replied to Andy_Copland's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi denete, Try AC105. I was not referring to his flying the aircraft, I was referring to the jumper(s) not telling him that they were jumping illegal equipment. Hope that this clears that up for you, JerryBaumchen PS) And for you Andy: when I am in a foreign country I do not complain about their laws, their politics, who is serving if office, etc. I understand that it is illegal to chew gum in Singapore. I think that is a really stupid law, but if I ever get to Singapore I'll do my best not to chew gum. Might just mess with my bike riding. -

Hi Andy, There are laws in this country. One gets to choose to obey them or not. If one disobeys them then they should be ready to suffer the consequences. IMO, yes you did deceive him by not telling that the jump was being made in violation of an FAR. I once spent 11 months in your country and I have returned a number of times. If I ever broke ANY laws there then I did not know that I was doing so. I have travelled in Asia, South America, Australia & and a bunch of Europe. I always consider myself a guest when in someone else's country. JerryBaumchen -

Hi howard, Yup that is one of them. But you must be some kind of cheapskate; yours doesn't have the little dust filter in the rear hole like mine did. It was an option. Like yours, mine quit 'working' and I had it laying around for about 20 yrs ( I just liked the look of it sitting on the shelf ) and then finally decided that the days of the bulky altimeters were long gone. So out it went. JerryBaumchen -
Demo team jumps into wrong stadium
JerryBaumchen replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hi Aggie, Just one question: Was Ted Mayfield involved in this demo? It sounds like one of his. JerryBaumchen -
Hi cloud, Something to consider: the white will be in 1,000 denier and not the 500 denier that the rest of the rig will be. Also, I 'think' that orange only comes in 1,000 denier. 1,000 denier looks and feels substantially different than 500 denier. You might request some samples of the fabric in the colors you are planning and see if that might change your mind. Just my thoughts (maybe good - maybe worthless ). JerryBaumchen

Hi Michael, It just peels off. Pack it up & pull on the RSL lanyard as it would be pulled during a cutaway. Very little resistance, JerryBaumchen PS) Wait till you see their latest version with the SkyHook; they put the RSL under some folded fabric ala the Infinity rig.

JerryBaumchen replied to phildthedildo's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Hi Roger, That panel looks home-made or locally made. The one Guru is referring to is an AeroIndicator with the black wrinkle finish. They were the hot stuff back then. AeroIndicator also made a rather large, but very nice & very accurate, altimeter. JerryBaumchen -

Hi phil, Johnny & Harry went to South Carolina to set up a shop which became North American Aerodynamics. Not too long after they moved Ron left the company and went to work in private industry. Ron then eventually started Nat'l Parachute Supply which he then sold to Larry Krueger. The last that I heard Ron was living in Florida doing real estate. I think Harry finally retired but Johnny is still the NAA man. Anyone remembering seeing the photo of Johnny in TIME magazine on the article about NAFTA; maybe about 14 or so years ago? Jump on the NAA website and you should find Johnny. JerryBaumchen PS) Yup, the Mini System was the first 'style' rig to hit the market. Anyone remember their ads with the girls in the mini-skirts? PPS) A little quiz: What was the serial number of the very first production Para-Foil? -
Hi Dave, Maybe, maybe not; the military is not controlled by the FAA. If the gear has any marking indicating TSO compliance ( which I doubt it would ) then it has been TSO'd. It all comes down to how the gear is marked. A typical letter from the FAA giving TSO-authorization usually just says that you are now allowed to mark the gear in accordance with the TSO. Oh, the letter says some other bureaucratic stuff but that is the part a mfr is looking for. At that point the mfr is good to go. HTH, JerryBaumchen
