Do you know what the implications are for a child who fails the exam? Does it mean that the child will fail a grade? Does it put the child in a track for tutoring? The article doesn't speak to this at all. While the exam may not be good for some kids' self-esteem, it may set the bar a little higher while doing no damage to children educationally....depending upon how the results are used. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Well...I don't think it's BS at all. I agree that you should plan and fly a pattern. No doubt about that. But I still am interested in knowing how frequent canopy collisions are at single-Cessna dz's. When I look at the fatality pages, specifically the fatalities caused by canopy collisions, I'm not seeing single-Cessna dz's listed. Some AREN'T listed at all. Some...like the dz in Paraguay...I'd not have a clue what kind of dz that is. I think it's easy to try to flame me because it's always better to err on the side of caution. I don't disagree with that. And, as I've said all along, I think the post is very helpful. But since folks DO want to try to nail me to the wall (lol...j/k) it'd be interesting to see something to back it up! That's all. I would be interested to know just HOW deluded I've been these years... AND, my statement (which wasn't even the point to begin with) is about 4 people who have been jumping together for years (and the only people in the sky at any given time) and the relative unlikelihood of being involved in a canopy collision under those circumstances. It would be a freak occurrence, imho. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Both the Dems and the Repubs got us here, usually working together except when the cameras are rolling. Think about it. I think we all get along pretty well at the dropzone. :) linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

I don't think you'll have many people who might vote Democratic (the swing voters) even though Democrats tend to support things like Choice, sometimes gay marriage, things like that....but would NOT vote for one Republican because some other Republican was gay. Seems like a stretch. -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
-
I don't. Anymore than I think your characterization of Rep. being anti-homosexual is exclusive to the party. I've travelled all through the US and I've seen anti-gay mentalities everywhere. I just think most liberal elites don't want to admit that racism and other forms of discrimination exist within their own parties. But it's not going to "be advantageous to the Dems" for people who would vote Democratic anyway to be swayed by the Representative's sexual orientation. It would be advantageous to the Dems for people who would vote Republican otherwise to change their votes based on this situation. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. My point exactly. I'm not defending whether it is right or wrong. Personally, I don't see why it should be viewed differently. But society does see a difference and I will argue that the fact Foley is a homosexual makes this more politically advantageous to the Dems. I think that the difference is only significant to people who harbor ill-will toward homosexuals. The only reason it would be "advantageous to the Dems" is if Republican voters are so filled with hate towards homosexuals that they would refuse to vote Republican over one of their Republican Representatives soliciting a minor male vs. that same Republican Representative soliciting a minor female. I think that's a stretch. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Oh my. You're gonna drive me to drink....lol. Well, I disagree with you. But I'd still be interested in how many canopy collisions there have been at single-Cessna DZs in the last year...or ten years. In my own experience, in '94 with a load of us all with less than 100 jumps and worse-than-poor tracking skills, a friend and I both opened off-heading, and I had to lift my legs to avoid my buddy Jack's canopy. That, obviously, was an issue of poor tracking skills and poor canopy control on opening. The same year, I was wrapped up in another jumper's canopy from about 1500' to 500'. That was my first attempt at CRW, though I was not a willing participant with about 50 jumps. This fella, Dane, decided that I should do CRW (without my knowledge that he was gonna tag me) at 1500', and he wrapped me up in his canopy.... That, also, was a little different issue than lack of awareness of canopy traffic, but it happened nonetheless. While I still say that 4 people, who know each other's skydiving habits very well, landing in a 100-acre landing area don't have THAT much to worry about in terms of canopy collisions, I think it's an issue that those same people need to think about....because you're (hopefully) not always jumping in the comfort of you little home dz, and there's more to avoiding canopy collisions than awareness of traffic. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Easy - I got it from the statement "Traffic's just not an issue in our little spot" (Post #2 of THIS thread). Nothing there about "more comfortable", but the absolute statement "not an issue". THAT looks like a false sense of security to me. JEEZ John. . Let me rephrase then...Traffic is just not so much an issue at our HUMONGOUS airport. I'll try to be more accurate in my expressions in the future....well, prob'ly not, but hey. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It is clearly Bill Clinton's fault. Well....nudity is clearly sexual. Clinton got a blow job, which is also clearly sexual. Sexuality isn't necessarily immoral, but getting a blow job is. Clinton is from Arkansas, and Arkansas rubs up next to Texas in a clearly sexual way. We don't want immorality in our schools. Clinton is clearly to blame. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail

Isn't that rather subjective? Only somewhat subjective. "Sanity" may be a little more subjective than "honesty," but if somebody's lying, it's still a lie even if he's convinced himself of its truth. Sanity....I agree there are some people "teetering on the edge," but even if the psychotic guy thinks he's got the answer, the rest of the world can see that he's insane. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Groups like Anbar Revenge Brigade have come to the conclusion that the best way to reduce the coalition troop presence in their home regions is to flush out al-Qaeda elements in their cities. Iraqi Sunni tribal and religious leaders have been victims of al-Qaeda attacks, further turning key tribes in al-Anbar against al-Qaeda elements. The Anbar Revenge Brigade was formed with Iraqi government and coalition military backing and support through a "security committee" initiative that attempts to place security responsibility in the hands of local residents. The Anbar Revenge Brigade and groups like it are not a formal part of Iraq's security structure. Instead, they are armed groups made up of tribal members that assist securing al-Anbar in conjunction with Iraqi security services (Assyrian News Agency, January 30). It is estimated that the Brigade consists of around 100 members. The creation of the Anbar Revenge Brigade stemmed from meetings between provincial leaders, Iraqi security officials and coalition representatives in November 2005. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss creative solutions to step up U.S. withdrawal and to secure the cooperation of tribal elements in improving the security situation in the restive province (Arab Times, March 16). That, right there, is what I'd think we'd WANT to see. Great! I don't like the fact that we're there either, but I do like to see progress being made. Maybe this is some. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail -
I think it's a REALLY good point that this "sense of security" can be dangerous. I wouldn't begin to argue that. In my mind, not SO dangerous during routine jumps with my friends, but risky in terms of the confidence one builds over time. I'd bet there are quite a few people in a situation like mine: you gain aptitude with experience and confidence in your abilities, and you learn to trust in yourself as a safe, heads-up skydiver. But getting away from the small dz, to the Convention or other dz with congested skies, you have to have different skills. If ya' hadn't concentrated on those skills when you really didn't need 'em as much, those canopy skills will not have developed magically along with your other abilities. You're not much more capable than any 100-jump wonder at this point. AND I betcha you're not jumping that big 200-some-odd square foot Maverone anymore either. Anyway....I see no reason at all to argue with either kallend or Bytch on these points. Even if you don't think they all necessarily apply to you or me, it's damn good stuff to think about, imho. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. Maybe kallend should warned about not being lulled into a false sense of security as opposed to blatantly accusing her. I don't think kallend was accusing me of anything. Am I wrong, John? A false sense of security? Maybe. I just know that I don't find it difficult to keep up with the three other people who are in the air with me over our HUGE airport. I get nervous when I jump with 15+ people in the air. That might very well be because I feel pretty secure and capable of NOT flying into another canopy with the same 3 other canopies in the air with me that are almost always in the air with me. I know them. They know me. We all have a pretty good idea what each other is doing. Our "pattern" isn't a strict pattern, but usually just a suggestion....lol When I go to, say, Skydive Dallas, I have a sense of sense of insecurity since I'm out of my comfort zone, and haven't thought about those things in the bytch's post nearly as much as I prob'ly should have. WHICH is why I said, "Thanks, bytch." linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
