  1. Looks like we might have a diagnosis. The skin lump biopsy came back. The lumps are mast cell tumors. Given the weird blood work and strange hyper-clotting thing, the vet believes Ani has mast cell leukemia, and if he's right, the prognosis is very not good. I'm supposed to try to take him and his records to a veterinary oncologist tomorrow for a consultation.
  2. When you don't have children and the only thing waiting for you when you get home is your pet, animals can mean almost as much. My cat's been with me since a few days after I moved out of my parents' house six years ago, and we've gone through a lot of ups and downs together. My cats know when I'm upset, worried, or hurt, and they do their best to comfort me, even though they don't really understand what's wrong.
  3. Even if he does die, at least I'm doing everything possible to give him the best chance, and I won't regret that.
  4. Animals should be euthanized to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering for the animal, not because the pet is suddenly inconvenient or owner doesn't feel like paying the bill for the pet's care. When you adopt an animal, you take on responsibility for the animal's care, and the responsibility to make the best choices for the animal, and I take my responsibility to my pets seriously. Sometimes the best choices for the animal are expensive, but if that expense isn't a responsibility you are willing to take on, owning a pet probably isn't the right choice for you.
  5. The current tally is a little over $5300.00
  6. Unfortunately, the vet called me at 5 am with a diagnosis of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation, which means his blood is clotting, but not where it should, and they don't know why. The vet is not optimistic.
  7. Good news: we got the intestinal biopsy results back. There is inflamation, but there is no cancer. We are still waiting on skin biopsy results of the weird skin lumps, but if he has cancer, it's not in his intestines. Bad news: He got sent home from the vet's office because he wouldn't eat there, so they thought he might do better at home. Within an hour of getting home, his surgical incision started to seep blood and fluids. This frightened me, so back to the vet we go. They did a new blood count, and found his platelets were low, and they don't know why. They're investigating. I'm glad they're a 24 hour vet. It's 3 am.
  8. for migraines, vicoprofen. (hydrocodone/ibuprofen). vicodin (hydrocodone/acetomenaphen) gives me stomach aches.
  9. It's another step that law abiding gun owners have to convince gun manufacturers to go through so they can buy their new guns. The bill doesn't make any sense, because most guns used in crimes are stolen or purchased on the black market, so the microstamp won't lead back to the right person.
  10. If a company decides not to do business because of regulatory standards, that's not a ban. That's like saying that California bans cars because their emission standards are higher than the rest of the country. I think, if you drive any freeway in California, you'll see those stadards have no impact on car sales whatsoever. Nice hype, but hardly a ban. There's a lot more car owners in CA than gun owners, and unfortunately, the number of CA gun owners has been shrinking over the past few decades. It is a very real possibility that a company may decide to forego the few thousand dollars they make out of CA gun sales to avoid the expensive process of adding microstamping technology that currently doesn't exist.
  11. It doesn't make any sense. It's just another step for law abiding gun owners to go through. Worst case, it creates a way for criminals to deceive police... throw down some random brass collected from a gun range, while picking up your own. Not only no real evidence, but wrong evidence. And what are they going to do about reloaded brass with more than one stamp? The bill is poorly thought through and requires technology that doesn't exist.
  12. What time is your flight again? LAX, right?
  13. I'll be drinking beer all day recouperating from the week. You can now drink beer at Disney! Well, at California Adventure, anyways.... they sell decent beer there, and margaritas, plus there's always the bars in downtown Disney. You can drink beer there, and then we can go to Disneyland!
  14. Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes. Anakin came through his exploratory surgery/biopsy just fine. The vet found some "areas of inflammation" that she biopsied and sent off to the lab. He gets to come home either tonight or tomorrow night, depending on whether he's eating, drinking and processing food and liquids normally. We should know in 2-4 days whether it's cancer.
  15. If you guys remember my post from a few weeks ago, the cat continued barfing, so today, the vet did an ultrasound. The ultrasound found a thickening(?) in the bowel that is indicative of either inflammatory bowel disease or lymphoma. The ultrasound vet said that the bowel looked like lymphoma, but inflammatory bowel also looks similar. They're doing an exploratory surgery/biopsy in a few hours to find out which one it is. We won't have the results for a few days, since visually, it's not easy to tell the difference, so it'll be up to the lab to make the diagnosis. I'm really worried.
  16. I'd be annoyed with you for the girls comment, except it's true. I invariably miss my target with my first shot from a double action trigger, just because the trigger pull is so hard I end up using my whole hand to pull it, which pulls the gun off target. Luckily, HK has the LEM option that gives a consistent trigger pull that isn't as hard as the double action, and Glock is consistent too.
  17. That's part of it, and the other part is that it just fits my hand really, really well. The only down side is that it's a bit on the expensive side.
  18. I'm currently considering a HK USP Compact 9mm or .40, or one of the Glock compacts (19 and 27, I think). I'll probably go with the 9mm, just because it's cheaper to practice with. The Glock has several safeties, it just doesn't have a manual safety switch, which has been a little hard for me to get over, but unless the trigger is pulled, a glock will not fire. A glock will not discharge accidentally unless you are doing something dumb with your finger on the trigger, and then it's not really an "accidental discharge", is it?
  19. If you only need a total of 40-50K, check into federal loans first. Private loans cost a LOT more.
  20. Just an update: I got an email from Austin, our AIDS Walk team coordinator, stating that our team is in the running for the top 20 AIDS Walk Teams this year! So, let's keep up the fundraising and get the Skydivers team in the top 20 AIDS Walk teams this year!!!!
  21. Hey, everyone! Just an update: we've raised over $3,000!!!! This rocks, but we're still a long way from our goal. I know everyone's working hard, so this is just a reminder to hit up those friends and family members who said they were going to donate but forgot! Also, if we can get only 5 more people to Walk, we get our own meeting table, which will make everything so much easier... so, if any of you dz.commers are thinking about walking, please come walk! If any current team members can recruit friends or family, that would be awesome too!
  22. I completely agree. If it wouldn't require me to post only in speaker's corner, my new sig line would be: "There is no necessary conflict between science and religion, provided that each respects the limits of its own way of seeking understanding."
  23. Franklin is looking forward to meeting you.
