For my work party, I'm going as Luna from Harry Potter. For Hollywood Halloween, I'm going as a pirate.

have you tried Wild Turkey? LOL, no, but I have tried rum on occasion. Doesn't help with the headache, but it does help with caring that I have a headache.

I would very much like to see legalization of medical marijuana, as it's an option I'd like to explore for treatment of my migraines, but until it's legal under federal law as well as California, it is not an option for me. Currently, I'm stuck using: Topamax Ibuprofen Norco Imitrex Relpax Midrin Tylenol Yaz Petadolex "mysterious study medication" that is either Inderal or placebo. Prilosec (to deal with side effects of other meds) all to treat or prevent migraines! Topamax, Yaz, Petadolex, and the study medication are to help perevent migraines. They seem to help some. The Imitrex and Relpax treat the headache, but give me rebound headaches the next day. The ibuprofen treats the rebound headaches and milder migraines, but gave me an ulcer. The prilosec treats the ulcer. Now I use midrin and tylenol in place of ibuprofen sometimes, but too much of that can cause liver damage. Norco works well for bad headaches, but I can't take that too often, because it's very addictive, and I can't take it when I've already taken midrin or tylenol, because all three contain tylenol. I am so envious of my friends who just go eat a brownie when they have a migraine.

Should lesbian student be allowed to wear tux in yearbook photo?
Nightingale replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
What is interesting is that this school actually recently held a "backwards beauty pageant" where the girls dressed as guys and the guys dressed as girls. Also, nowhere in the handbook does it say that women must wear the drape. This is what a photography drape looks like. http://www.studioaccentsplus.com/velvet-drapes.html Frankly, when I was in high school, I'd have vetoed that thing too! It's too sexy, it's off the shoulder, and you have to wear a tube top underneath to make sure the photographer doesn't see your boobs. I wouldn't have been comfortable being photographed like that. I'm glad our senior photos were in caps and gowns. -

It all contributes to creating stronger, more resilient strains of diseases.. I studied some of this stuff at uni - scary, but *fascinating*. Trouble is that there is no "proof" in science.. Only "evidence" and "strong correlation". Can you show me some evidence from a peer reviewed journal linking vaccines and the evolution of superbugs?
-
There are tons of private loans out there. Credit unions have them, banks have them, big loan companies like Sallie Mae have them. They all have different terms. Do some more investigating on financial aid before making any decisions.
-
To echo what RhondaLea said, vaccines don't create superbugs. They work with your immune system to help you fight off a disease if you're exposed. We create superbugs by overusing antibiotics and antibacterials.

I'm pretty sure it's the flicker, but that's just a guess. I didn't think LEDs flicker, but I don't have any. I guess I should just stick with the incandescents, since they seem to be working for me. I noticed a big difference in my headache diaries when I changed all the lightbulbs back.
-
CFLs give me migraines. =( I wish I could use them. I wish LEDs were cheaper. Right now, I've got plain old incandescent light bulbs, and a lot fewer headaches than I did when I had CFLs in every fixture. My electric bill isn't that much higher.

The man/woman of your dreams who turns into a monster..
Nightingale replied to Nataly's topic in The Bonfire
One of my exes is one of my closest friends, but he and I were good friends before we started dating. We broke up, he went to boot camp, and when he came back, we were able to be friends. I think this was for a couple of reasons: 1. We had a really strong friendship beforehand. 2. We already knew how to be "just friends"; we'd done it for years. 3. His boot camp gave us some time and distance to heal from the hurt feelings and to realize that while we weren't "in love" anymore, if we ever were, we did love each other and genuinely missed our friendship. -

It doesn't make sense to me either. All of my ex boyfriends were wonderful people. We just weren't wonderful together for one reason or another. I wish all of them the best, and I really hope that they find happiness. -

Who rides motorcycles and what is your ride?
Nightingale replied to xtravrtsoul's topic in The Bonfire
Took the MSF course last year. Own a Vespa (not a motorcycle, but, hey, it has two wheels and is freeway legal), and borrow my dad's Suzuki Boulevard every so often, which isn't often enough in my opinion. Unless it is raining or I have to carry a lot of stuff or a passenger, I generally pretend that I don't own a car and take the scooter everywhere. Eventually, I will have my own motorcycle. Currently have my eye on the HD Sportster 883, but haven't had a chance to ride one yet, so I'm not sure what I will end up with when I do have the cash to buy. In the meantime, the Vespa is getting about 70 MPG and is almost paid for, so I can't really complain. -
The deduction for donations to a non-profit would have to be narrowed to those that actually perform certain functions that the government would otherwise have to provide, such as feeding/caring for the poor, providing medical care, promoting medical research, etc. Donating to a church's soup kitchen would be deductible, but donating to their fund to build a new church wouldn't be, because Congress shouldn't be passing laws respecting establishment of religion. Hope I'm making sense... like I said above, I'm on painkillers.
-
Thank you, Bill, for explaining what I'm actually trying to say. I should know better than to post when I'm on migraine meds.

Sorry, percentage was the wrong word there. A flat tax percentage over a certain amount (poverty line), so it would actually be biased against those making more money, because the poor would pay virtually nothing (see above discussion). Say the tax is 10% for ease of numbers. So, if I make $30,000, and that's the poverty line, I pay nothing or a token amount. If I make $50,000, I pay $5000 in tax. If I make $100,000, I pay $10,000 in tax. Then, I pay tax on anything else I buy that is not food or medications. The rich tend to buy more expensive things, so they would pay more tax. The poor tend to buy cheaper things, and would therefore pay less tax.

I understand the idea of government meddling in social behavior. I just disagree with it. I don't see why the government should be 'encouraging' social behavior. We can do that ourselves. No deductions, no penalties - just stay neutral and don't touch it. In most circumstances I agree with you. Government social engineering is bad. However, in this case, private charities are dealing with (and probably would become more involved with) problems that the government is currently addressing. The money funneled that way would be actively lifting a burden from the government, as problems such as homelessness and other issues addressed by charities are generally issues that must be addressed somehow, or they have a drastic effect on society. We want people feeding the homeless so they aren't starving. We want people providing low cost health care to people who can't afford it. And we want charities doing these things so the government doesn't have to, because a government solution is going to be more expensive and less effective. A tax deduction is a way to ensure that money continues to flow to charitable organizations and the government gets by on less money because it is less involved in social programs that are better addressed by charities in the first place.
