anyone got a good way to curb carb cravings?
Nightingale replied to waltappel's topic in The Bonfire
Ok... rephrase: Low carb diets are not for athletes, mainly because athletes tend to burn a lot of calories and require more fuel than average, so they end up in a deeper state of ketosis than the casual person who goes for a run a few times a week, consequently, ending up in the hospital. When I was in college there were a couple of dancers who ended up pretty sick because of the low-carb thing. Liver/kidney problems and the like. One of the reasons low-carb diets tend to work for some people is that they get you to think about what you're eating. When you can't snack without thinking about it, and you actually have to pay attention to what you put in your mouth, you usually end up eating less. -
I saw someone at Perris about two years ago (I was still a student) who had "Plan A" embroidered on his hackey, "Oh Shit!" embroidered on his cutaway handle, and "Plan B" on the reserve handle.

Sequoia is a long drive from SoCal. It is beautiful, however. I spent three days in Sequoia and four in Yosemite the last time I was there, and it was not nearly enough.

Low carb diets are for people who don't exercise. You can make yourself pretty sick. For example, Atkins talks about "ketosis" as if it's a good thing, but when an EMT realizes you're in ketosis, they take you to the hospital! Ketosis is one of the body's last-ditch emergency responses; deliberately inducing ketosis can lead to muscle breakdown, nausea, dehydration, headaches, light-headedness, irritability, bad breath, and kidney problems. In pregnancy, ketosis may cause fetal abnormality or death. It can also be fatal in individuals with diabetes! While supporters of the Atkins diet concentrate so much on the fat burning capability of ketosis they neglect to mention that over the long term protein, and thus muscle, is also burned! http://inch-aweigh.com/dangeratkins.html] http://www.sideroad.com/Weight_Loss/low-carb-diet-danger.html If you want to lose weight, eat fewer calories than you burn. You can lose weight eating nothing but chocolate. It doesn't much matter what you eat, but HOW MUCH. Where what you eat really matters is your body getting nutrition, vitamins, minerals and fiber. A calorie is just a unit of energy. If you can, ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist. They will work with you to come up with a diet plan that's appropriate for your lifestyle. -
In general, the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist seems to depend on who wins, who loses, and who writes the history books.

They treat blackberries differently, like PDAs instead of like phones.
-
Yes. they enable headset features and car features, but block all information transfer features.
-
If you have verizon, connecting the razr to your computer will do nothing. Verizon has crippled the bluetooth in their phones because they want you to pay for those features. They just lost big-time in a class action suit, but they haven't stopped doing it.

I'd do exactly the same thing. finish my BA, get my MA, and start law school.

If you're anywhere near a wind tunnel, talk to your instructors about what they would think of you going there for ten minutes or so in the tunnel. could do wonders for your confidence.
-
Switch to another provider (I have Cingular... They gave me the RAZR free, and they don't block bluetooth. I was able to port my entire address book over to the phone in a few seconds!)

As I have just discovered some wonderful wine, I must go try it.

I wonder if it could be argued that it would an unreasonable search to fingerprint someone just for a traffic stop.

Cut up all your cards and stop using them. Pick the card/loan with the highest interest rate and pay the most you can afford, and pay the minimums on everything else. When that card is paid off, take the one with the next highest interest rate and repeat until you have no more credit card debt.

Can I find the zin at BevMo? So far I like zin better than cab.

I like the way you think. Cheap red wine tends to give me terrible headaches, so I'm very hesitant about which ones I'll try. I didn't drink reds for years because they made me feel so awful, but one of the guys at the local wine cellar (Hi-Time) recommended the Fly By Night Zinfandel and told me that he promised it wouldn't give me a headache (and would get me my money back if it did). I tried it, no headache. Does anyone know why red wine gives some people headaches, and why some reds will give headaches and others won't?

Fixed. Thank you!

I've been trying to learn about wine, and I'm curious what people's favorites are, and how much they cost. My favorites so far: Zinfandel Fly By Night (Downing Family Vinyard, 2003) $25 Opolo Mountain Zinfandel (2002) $28 Merlot Witch Creek Reserve, 2001, $28 Port Jeeves' Reserve (Witch Creek Winery) $30 Warrior Port (Warre) $15 Riesling Chateau St.Michelle $8 Chardonnay Witch Creek Winery $15 Muscat Allegro Moscato (Martin Weyrich, 2003) $10

Hehe... just go for quality over quantity. I'd rather have one shot of really good tequila (El Jimador Anejo or Patron) or a glass of really good wine (zinfandel, please), than an entire bottle of cheap stuff.

Jury Finds Abu Ghraib Dog Handler Guilty
Nightingale replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
He's searching for a term to describe them. They are covered under the convention. They either fall under Geneva 3, article 4 (POWs) or Geneva 4, article 4 (Civilian Persons: "Persons protected by the Convention are those who, at a given moment and in any manner whatsoever, find themselves, in case of a conflict or occupation, in the hands of a Party to the conflict or Occupying Power of which they are not nationals.") Geneva 4 is the catch-all that covers everyone not covered by Geneva 3. -
Americans, not politicians, hold power to change Iraq war
Nightingale replied to jkm2500's topic in Speakers Corner
Or, you attack someone because you think they might attack you, and whether they had plans to actually attack you or not, you've now pissed him off AND all of his friends, making an attack a lot more likely than it was before your so-called pre-emptive attack. The point is that you never know in situations like this. When you are truly acting in self defense, you KNOW. I've been in a situation where I had to defend myself. Had I turned around and hit the guy because I thought he was maybe following me, I'd probably have been arrested. When I hit him AFTER he tried to do something to me, had I called the cops, I probably wouldn't have been the one in the back of the police car. There weren't many americans objecting to our decision to enter WWII, after Pearl Harbor. We knew who attacked us, and we struck back. With 9-11, we were attacked by an organization (and I use that term loosely), not a country. There was no real, clear enemy, which is why many people have a problem with this war. We're not sure if we're "pre-emptively striking" the wrong people. -
Did it break the skin or just bruise it?

Americans, not politicians, hold power to change Iraq war
Nightingale replied to jkm2500's topic in Speakers Corner
In the US this is called self defense. Plenty of questionable cases have stood up to scrutiny in the good ol USA. In the Iraq scenario, we believed(or the government believed) that there was sufficient reason to make a decision to go to war. Self-defense plea. I am sure that you have heard the saying "I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6". Um... no. A basic legal definition of Self defense is: "Use of force is justified when a person reasonably believes that it is necessary for the defense of oneself or another against the immediate use of unlawful force. However, a person must use no more force than appears reasonably necessary in the circumstances. Force likely to cause death or great bodily harm is justified in self-defense only if a person reasonably believes that such force is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm." You can't go shooting someone because you think they'll shoot you next week. If you have a reasonable belief that they are going to shoot you right now, you may have a good chance at acquittal because of self defense. -
Clean up. Also, try to dog-proof the place (child locks on under-sink cleaner cabinets, etc). They'll help you with suggestions to make the place more dog-friendly, if necessary.
