By the middle 70's I was pretty heavily involved in drug use. I was never arrested although I can think of 2 incidents where I could have been. I look back on those times with mixed emotions. I was stupid. It was actually skydiving that broke the cycle. But I digress. If I had been incarcerated I'm pretty sure I could have 'paid my dues' and re-entered society. I don't think that happens today. It's so easy for an employer to run a background check and exclude an offender regardless of the offense. Sometimes I watch the TV show 'Cops'. I shake my head every time I see some poor fool busted for a small amount of drugs that was obviously for personal use. I know the cops like to sweat the small timer to get to the next fish on the food chain but that poor fuck has probably had his life ruined. And now I fear that once you've been incarcerated your chances of ending up back in prison probably quadruple due to the fact that you can't find a decent job upon your release. I was lucky. From the report I just read, the shooter first killed his wife, drove into the city, killed the cops, then killed himself. I think many here in the US would be surprised at the level of tourism going on in Cuba. One time in Jamaica an airline was offering a day trip to Cuba. We considered it but declined. Another revealing "detail" is that apparently two of the prisoners who were subjected to "advanced interrogation" turned out to be our guys, informants who were passing real intelligence on to us before they were taken prisoner. The zeal to torture was apparently so high that it didn't actually matter if the prisoner was actually a "bad actor", it was sufficient that they had a towel on their head. Of course this also says terrible things about the disconnect between the CIA and the contractors they engaged to do the actual dirty work, so Cheney et al could wash their hands of the affair and pretend it had nothing to do with them. Every time I see Cheney on the news, I'm reminded of the Emperor from Star Wars.
