Still here and so far so good . . . In a few minutes the fixed wing aerial tankers will have to quit flying for the night. But, the helicopters must have night vision as they just keep dropping water in the dark, thank goodness. NickD

Well, I'm just home from work and things have taken a turn for the worse here. There are mandatory evacuations orders for the block right above us, so we're next . . . Six homes in our neighborhood have already burned. We have both our vehicles loaded and ready to go. And now we're just making some dinner in case we spend the night, or longer, in the shelter. I also have my EMS jump bag in case anyone at the shelter needs basic medical care and so, at least, I can be useful . . . We're insured but still, if we get the call to go, we'll be leaving 50 years of memories behind. The fire is above us, and also east and west of us. So we are in the middle. The DC-10 tanker is flying above us continuously now. If we can just get thru the hottest part of the day we still might have a chance, otherwise things are looking bleak . . . NickD

I'm back from LA and all's okay at my place so far but there is a lot of fire right by the 2 and 210 freeway interchange. A big thanks to Eric Gallan who called and volunteered to come by with his truck if Nina needed a ride out. Still very smokey here . . . NickD

Here's the latest official info. So far the evac area is still a bit east of us . . . NickD "The Station Fire, which was originally traveling north in the Angeles National Forest, took a turn for the worse as winds shifted it southward towards homes in La Canada Flintridge. 1,500 acres have burned and containment has been downgraded to zero percent, says Gabriel Alverez, a fire information officer with the U.S. Forest Service. A mandatory evacuation is now in affect for 873 homes north of Vista del Valle Road, East of La Canada Boulevard and north of Starlight Crest Drive. The evacuation center is now at La Canada High School. 750 personnel have responded to the scene, which includes four helicopters, one air tanker and 14 to 16 engines. Highway 2 remains closed as the conflagration continues to move in a southward direction in triple digit heat."

We live near the Station Fire that started in La Cananda and last night about midnight we got a reverse 911 call telling us to be ready to evacuate if necessary. At about 4:AM I drove around the neighborhood to see how close the fire actually was and saw the flames cresting the San Gabriel Mountains that are behind us. This area has not burned in over sixty years. Right now (10:AM) it's very smokey here with ash falling all over. And the Fire Dept says they have zero percent containment. The good news is the winds are very light, if a Santa Ana Wind was blowing we'd be in big trouble for sure. The bad news is the temps will be over 100 F again today with very low humidity There are also several other fires burning in So Cal as well. One in Palos Verdes (where Barbara Streisand lives) one in Hemet, another close to Pasadena, and the fourth in Idylwild. NickD

Before old Abe was at Disneyland he was first exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1964. That's were I first saw him (it). I doubt people who see Abe today realize how "old" he really is . . . The photo is my class trip to that World's Fair, and we are at the train station. I'm in white holding the bag lunch my Mother made for me. I was in the fourth grade . . . NickD

Anne's in Dubai right now teaching a class of woman to be Parachute Riggers. Under Islamic law they can't be taught by men so that's how she got the gig. She's flown in the Prince's private wind tunnel and snow skied in their indoor mountain . . . In that black Burqa all she needs is a scythe to be complete . . . And if she gets popped jumping this we'll have to bust her out. We can call ourselves Pisswater and get some Gov funding . . . NickD
