Why are Mains BIGGER than RES ????
NickDG replied to shaz_nz's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I think what people forget (or never realize) is if you have a malfunction under a reserve the bigger it is the bigger malfunction it will handle without killing you. A broken line (or a few,) a blown out seam (or a few,) an uncontrollable turn (or a spin,) is always best survived under a bigger canopy. In B.A.S.E. jumping many think we jump big canopies for better landing performance. But the truth is when you only have one canopy to begin with . . . NickD -
So I'm out the other day, just puttin' around on Nina, and I'm cruising through Montrose, just smiling at the ladies, and all of a sudden I see several police cars up ahead and the cops are wrestling with some guy on the side of the road. And like always, I think, "Hey, better him than me." So, I goosed Nina a little bit and blew on by them. The next day I learned it was an actor from the "Son's of Anarchy" TV show. His name is Mark Boone Jr, but I've never seen the show so I don't really know who he is. (I live the life, not watch it on the tube, LOL) Funny thing was he wasn't on a bike, he was in a mid-90s white Thunderbird. (What, no Limo?) Here's the booking report from local sources: NAME: HEIDRICH, MARK LORENZ DOB: 3/17/1955 Charge: 243(B)PC Bail Amount: $20,000.00 Booking #: 2452807 Report #: 100014356 Arrest Date/Time: 8/24/2010 1640 Booking Date/Time: 8/24/2010 1741 Sex: M Height: 5'09" Weight: 240 Hair: BRO Eye: BRO Occupation: ACTOR Location of Arrest: HONOLULU AV/RAMSDELL AV (243(B)PC is battery on a police officer.) Everyone (around here) thinks it was a publicity stunt for the new season of the show, but it looked real enough to me. So, way to get into your "part" Bro, LOL! NickD

Logic aside, and owning to the geometry of the human body, smaller mains begat still smaller reserves. Logic included, today's rigs are designed upside down, the reserve should be on the bottom, not the top. NickD -
The reason U.S. football players wear pads and helmets is so smaller guys can play on the same field as bigger guys. If not for the gear the smaller running backs and offensive ends wouldn't last five minutes. And if everyone was big it would be a very different and much more boring game. NickD

For sure, hold downs . . . NickD

Just back from a test putt with Nina's new turn sigs! Running all the wires was a PITA but everything works! l just gotta remember to use them now, LOL. NickD

I'm thinking we need more free speech, not less. Yes, I disdain those posers too, but the bigger picture is more important. I want Nazis marching down main street. I want Fox news spreading their agenda driven filth. I want more homophobic gay bashing. Because as soon as we feel freedom isn't in need of street soldiers standindg up it'll be the end of us all . . .

Even Dana's isn't as bad as some of the bling barges I see around here. I love your Cousin It seat! NickD :)

I usually don't bag on someone trying to learn music (I've been struggling with a bass guitar for a few years now) but this is so bad it's comical . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6eMW0cEXY0&feature=player_embedded#! NickD

The sigs are amber in the front . . . And yes Nina's friends "are" boring. All store-bought stockers and those guys think a big modification is bolting on some new chrome doo dad, LOL! I've sort of become the go-to-guy for mechanical problems. Mostly it's, "Hey Nick, what the heck is this noise?" Or, "Can you adjust my clutch?" On the sigs, no I didn't want to run them at all. I'm comfortable riding without them as the hand signals are just to be legal, but I never change lanes, or do anything really, until I can do so without counting on some cager to do the right thing. Also one of the great things about California is there are a lot of motorcycles on the road and cagers see them all year long (not like in the Northeast where they completely disappear during the winter) so the drivers (while bad like everywhere) are more used to sharing the road. If you're asking me, I'd like to see this thread keep going with whatever is motorcycle related . . . The cops are doing mega-enforcement operations on motorcycles in my area so I decided to throw a set of turn signals on Nina. I just went down today and bought a 5 buck signal flasher at the auto parts store and laid out the wiring. The lights themselves I got off Ebay for cheap. It's all working through the switches on the handlebars (which is cool) and tomorrow I'll button it all up. Also a photo of Nina out with a few of her friends . . . NickD

Naw, me and Nina are getting along all right. She's a true and solid girl, and if there's anything squirrely, like usual, it's more me . . . NickD

It was a blazing hot afternoon at Lake Elsinore in 1978. The Beech D-18 was full and I jumped into the right seat. Gary Douris was flying (RIP) and I noticed, on his yoke, one of those sticky stamped things, that said "Crashing Sucks!" I only had about a hundred jumps then and I asked Gary what does that mean? And he looked at me like I was from Mars. Since that day I've put that little message in/on every car, truck, and motorcycle I've ever owned. Crawling out of the Perris Bomb Shelter at 2am in the morning (with less than a mile to drive home) that stupid sticker always made me think twice and I'd just crawl up in the back instead. I want to put one on Nina's handlebars, but when I went down to the Office Depot the kid on duty didn't know what I was taking about. It's that thing with the wheel and you set the letters and punch out the message. Don't they make those anymore? I'm pretty much doomed if they don't . . . NickD

That's Hamilton Burger. He was the district attorney Perry Mason was always up against in court. Oh, you 1970s kids, LOL! NickD

Very cool photos. Your boy looks righteous and Dana looks as beautiful as ever. You're a lucky man. Except if you start shooting video again you're going to need a bigger jumpsuit, LOL! NickD

I do! One of my first jobs was pumping gas when the pumps were mechanical. (And gas stations actually employed pump jockeys.) Customers would often ask for their gas in gallons not by dollar amount. And I was always proud of the fact I could get it spot on. Nowadays, with the way modern pumps fly, I can still do it. It's a useless skill, but a skill nonetheless, LOL . . . Plus, it was super sexy when Cougars (we used to call them old bags) would demand, "Hey Sonnny, check my oil!" NickD

You're the special one. Woman are like catching a bus. Just wait 15 minutes and another one comes along . . . NickD :)

I've done both L-39s and Mig ejection seats but had the manuals for both. I'm a A&P as well as a rigger. It was years ago up in Cal City so I don't recall much about them. One of them did however have that square/round canopy in it. Bob didn't know anymore about them than I did, but Hank did, and he's the guy I'd get in touch with. NickD
