  1. I own 2 reflex rigs. It's freefly friendly and the best poptop out there. I've had 4 chops on the rigs and reserve deployment was flawless. The reserve packing thing about having the top re-tightened is only because it wasn't packed correctly. It dosen't pack like a Jav. I've had many repacks from my rigger without it ever needing adjustment. It's not a problem with the rig. A rigger experienced in packing the rig should get right the first time. Good Luck!   5. I will be out in SanFrancisco CA on business twice over the next month. I'll have a couple free days to jump. I will be staying at the Pan Pacific. This is my first time in SF.   7. I have seen a few. they are a low end container, comparable to a Dolphin. The price is right. You might want to check out the Teardrop. It's a great quality container that is TSO'd (single pin reserve) with a good price. "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!" Old Man Crawfish
  8. 14 jumps and I bought a 170 Heatwave and a cheapo dolphin container. At 50 jumps I dropped to a Heatwave 150 in a Mirage. Before 100 jumps I had jumped a 150 Stiletto and 110 sabre. (I weighted 190 out the door then) Since then, too many different canopies to count. I'm stuck on my Xaos 108 in a G3 and Diablo 150 now. Canopies are like cars, some fit you well, others don't.   9. My wife broke her leg and arm under the conserative 240 Mantas. She never had a decent landing. She made a jump to a 160 with a 1.1 loading and has never had a problem. I question the actually safety factor in these large canopies. With the improvement in design and performance, I think it's time to moderate, respective of student canopy size.   10. My G3 straps loosten up sitting in the plane going to altitude. I put an extra keeper on each strap placed up tight against the buckle. You can use rubber bands too. A tug before exit and I'm cool for the ride down. "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!" Old Man Crawfish

  12. I wouldn't hesitate to load 1:1 as a newbie, using a new style canopy. Hanging in winds and being driven backwards under a too large canopy, can be as hazardous as coming in too fast on a small one. Demo... Demo...Demo... "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!" Old Man Crawfish

    First Jump

    Congrats!!! The things you feel about the jump is pretty much common to everyone else who has jumped. If you haven't done it, you'll never understand it! Have you thought about AFF?? Believe me, it just keeps gettin' better. And once you get about 25-50 jumps under your belt, you develop a completly new awarness of flying your body AND that keeps gettin' better and better and better...   14. You need to do something to get rid of that bad Karma hanging over your head. Might suggest you buy a couple tandem jumps as an 'affirmation of Life" for let's say... someone new to AA or some depressed kid? "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!" Old Man Crawfish
  15. You can't shake off the fear. I broke my leg when I flared too high on AFF 3 then broke my arm on AFF 8. My personal ability to judge height and speed, depth perception that kinda stuff was really poor when I came in on the 9 cell student canopies. The flat glide of the canopy really made it hard to judge my landings. I tried a canopy with a steeper decent angle (7 cell Triathlon) and no more broken bones!!   16. If the back of your calves catch air you will back slide. I see a lot of flyers compensating for poor leg positioning by putting their arms way behind them. The antagonism puts them into more of a recliner position not a true sit and it requires a lot of effort. As the gurus said before, the limbs need to be at right angles with the feet flat to the ground. Control movements in a good sit position require just small input and effort. A good excercise to assist in perfecting the sit is to try flying Indian style (like Brian G. on the cover of his book) and you might also try just tucking your heels against your butt and flying on your knees. Coming out of these positions into a normal sit helps you learn that almost all the flying is done with whe hips & knees. Safe and fun flying to you! "Slow down!   17. My wife and I were there in Dec of last year. We each 40 min in the tunnel. The coaching was outstanding! I was SO embarassed...I had no idea I sucked that bad in the air. I had problems at first holding altitude when I turned. I couldn't sitfly very well, if at all. It's the greatest tool in the world for honing your skills. "Slow down!   20. I jumped that Russian PC copy in 1974. They called it something that sounded like "yakamanahept"... By today's standards the openings would be considered very hard, but compared to the T-10's it was a dream. It had 1-1/2 shot Capewells and we used a bellywart reserve. And you are correct it was a better canopy than the PC and also the French PC copy called the Papillon. They were beautiful to see in flight. "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!"   23. I didn't notice an unusual control range. It just took more effort to use the risers or toggles. I just called PD and spoke about this problem this morning. They acknowledged higher forces were required on the risers and toggles as opposed to other comparable canopies; but it would drop off some as the dive speed increased. It was their opinion that my light loading was a contributing factor. I'll be trying a size smaller later this year. I am not knocking this canopy at all, it is an incredible performer with solid predictable flight characteristics. I can't wait to jump the next size. "Slow down!   24. We used to call them a "Mae West". I don't recall ever hearing instructing a student just to chop without a least 1 full riser pump to attempt to resolve the line over. I've seen and had a number of chops over the years. Is there less emphasis in todays student instruction to "resolve problems" and to just chop immediatly with the occurance of anyhing out of the ordinary? "Slow down!   25. Well this last weekend I got a chance to put some jumps on my PD Velocity demo. I really loved the canopy, it's nicest PD I've ever flown. Fantastic openings, grreat swoops. BUT...toggle and front riser input force was crazy. Pulling a toggle felt like I was under a 240 Manta. I got worn out using front risers! The canopy was loaded at around 1.7. Was this a fluke or do all Velocities require a fair amount of oomph to manuver them? (or maybe I'm just gettin' weak in my old age) Thanks! "Slow down! You are too young to be moving that fast!"
